MISSION STATEMENT

• The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.

Facts• The American Red Cross is not a government agency but a

privately-funded humanitarian organization• The ARC relies on donations of time, money and blood to

deliver lifesaving services to individuals and families living in Idaho

• Services are free to our clients, based on need• Assistance is based on verified disaster-related damage• ARC provides immediate emergency assistance• Nationally, an average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red

Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs

• Impartial – ARC makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions

ARC National

• The American National Red Cross is located in Washington, D.C.

• The ARC is made up of over 700 Chapters & 36 Blood Services Regions

• Each year, victims of some 70,000 disasters turn to the ARC for services

• More than half a million volunteers and 35,000 employees

ARC – Greater Idaho• Idaho is a ONE Chapter State (only 5 nation-wide)• Headquartered in Boise, ID• 5 Districts throughout the state• We are the North Central Idaho District– Serving 7 Counties – approximately 123,800 residents

• Latah approximately 35,000 residents• Idaho approximately 15,500 residents• Nez Perce approximately 37,500 residents• Lewis approximately 3,800 residents• Clearwater approximately 9,000 residents• Asotin approximately 20,600 residents • Garfield approximately 2,400 residents

• North Central Idaho has approximately 20 Disaster Response Volunteers

• 9 Paid Staff in the state of Idaho• 1 Paid Staff in NC Idaho (Health & Safety)• 280 Volunteers in the state of Idaho

Disaster Action Team -(Local Response)

• What do we do?– On a Local level, our biggest response is to Single Family Fires

• In 2008, we responded to 24 fires; 14 of which were in Nez Perce County, 2 in Latah County

– Greater Idaho Chapter responds to more than 240 disaster situations annually, more than 600+ families

– Sheltering for wildfire evacuees (Chimney Complex fire – Waha)• What do we provide locally?

– Shelter– Food– Clothing– Health Services– Mental Health Counseling

Services

• Client Services: Providing direct assistance to individuals affected by man-made or natural disasters, ranging from single-family home incidents to larger events such as tornadoes, floods and hurricanes, and catastrophic incidents

• Health Services & Mental Health Assistance• Mass Care: Feeding, Sheltering• Armed Forces: The ARC links members of the

U.S. Armed Forces with their families during a crisis

Other Services

• Today, in addition to domestic disaster relief, the American Red Cross offers compassionate services in five other areas: • support and comfort for military members and their

families• the collection, processing and distribution of lifesaving

blood and blood products• educational programs that promote health and safety; • and international relief and development programs
