About Yayasan IDEP’s Disaster Management Work

Indonesia is one o the most disaster prone nations in the world. It located at the riction

points o three continental tectonic plates, and has the largest number o historically

active volcanoes in the world. Earthquakes are requent and there is a high risk o volcanic

eruptions, tsunamis, oods, landslides, orest fres, and, in some regions, drought and

social unrest.

Beore, during and ater disasters Yayasan IDEP works together with local communities to

help increase understanding and resilience to disasters. In times o disaster IDEP workswith a nationwide network o local partners to get people the assistance they need as

quickly as possible. IDEP’s Community Based Disaster Management (CBDM) capacity

building program assists local communities to understand and implement a range o

eective actions that can help to reduce the chance o disaster

happening in their area, be more prepared i disaster

does happen, and recover more quickly and more

sustainably rom disasters.

As with all o IDEP’s programs, our aim in our

Disaster Management work is to “help people

help themselves”. IDEP achieves this through

community capacity building, demonstrations,

and practical hands-on education.

Disaster Management Capacity Building Trainings

Community CBDM Trainings - increases community

knowledge and ability to practice disaster management

Knowledge about disaster - What is disaster? What disasters

and hazards are your community prone to? What are the signs o

disaster occurring, what to do i they happen and how to use the

CBDM kit or eective disaster management

Community preparedness and risk reduction - history o

disaster in the area, community asset and risk assessment, list

o medical acilities and key contact people in the area, disaster

preparedness and planning actions appropriate to local hazards.

Development o Community Risk Maps and evacuation plans

Emergency response - how to assist victims at time o a disaster

including basic evacuation training

Training of CBDM Facilitators - CBDM Facilitator trainings

include hands-on experience conducting CBDM community trainings

as outlined above, while developing acilitation skills or risk reduction,

community preparedness, response and recovery. These trainings:

CBDM Preparedness Activities for Local Schools



IDEP’s CBDM kit has been successully used or education and empowerment in communities

rom throughout Indonesia. The kit is endorsed by Indonesia’s BAKORNAS PBP, SATKORLAK,

MPBI (Masyarakat Penangulanggan Bencana Indonesia) and other expert advisors. It uses

simple language appropriate or grass roots communities throughout Indonesia.

CBDM Manual and ready-to-use forms and KMPB job

descriptions - can be used by local communities to prepare or

and reduce the impacts o disasters. The ‘Beore Disasters’ section

includes instructions or developing a community based disaster

management team, disaster mapping and training options. It also

includes a ull set o orms or disaster mitigation planning. The

‘During Disasters’ section includes evacuation procedures andon how to work with disaster management agencies. The ‘Ater

Disasters’ section includes impact assessment, soliciting support

rom donors, monitoring recovery processes and working with

disaster management agencies.

8 optional disaster comic books - these fctional accounts o

how communities responded to disasters are an engaging way to

introduce community based disaster preparedness. Each comic

includes a act sheet about the causes and appropriate responses

to the disaster covered in the story line. Optional titles include:
