• A cyclonic storm “Phailin” made landfall ataround 9 pm on 12th October 2013 nearthe coast of Gopalpur in Ganjam districtinundating vast stretches.

• DSC kept a close watch and RISAT-1 datawas planned over the affected areas.

• Combination of RISAT-1 data along withother satellite data helped in continuousmonitoring of the flood event.

Objective: To investigate the polarimetric SAR data for delineation of submerged crop fields

Satellite data: SLC of C-band data of 15-Oct-2011, 10-Sep-2010 and 03-Sep-2009 from RADARSAT satellite

Polarimetric SAR data - Flood studies

Methodology Results

Conclusion: C-band Polarimetric SAR data has the potential to identify the partially submerged crop fields

which is very useful for flood damage assessment

NISAR Mission - Flood Disaster Application

On-going :• Major floods and cyclones in India are monitored and mapped in

near real time using C-band SAR data from RISAT andRADARSAT satellites

• Flood maps at State, District and detailed level along with floodinundated area statistics are disseminated to the concerned innear real time.

• Flood damage assessment for selected areas is carried out onrequest basis

Prospective applications:• Monitoring and mapping of wide area floods in India- NISAR

increases the frequency of monitoring• Detailed flood mapping for specific areas• Flood damage assessment using Polarimetric data• Monitoring and assessment of wetlands• Monitoring of shallow flood plains
