The Marriage Between God and His People Recently we have been drawing
from the prophet Hosea for many of
our daily mass readings. God’s
anger towards Israel's infidelity
makes Him look like someone only
to fear rather than someone towards whom we are
positively drawn. The situation between Israel and
God can look like a lawsuit, where we have a judge,
an accuser, and a defender. God is both judge and
accuser, and Israel, miserably unfaithful as she is, is
the helpless defender.
But the anger is not like that of a lawsuit. The entire
book of the prophet Hosea uses the marriage of a
prophet (Hosea) and prostitute (Gomer) to highlight
the marriage between God and Israel (prostitute).
Both have an unfaithful spouse. But God’s anger
towards Israel is not a lawsuit; it is a family quarrel.
The husband (God) is working through the
infidelity of his wife (Israel) and caught between
pity for her weakness and the rage of injustice done
to such a faithful and loving God. The fundamental
relationship between God and Israel is not like that
of a capricious lord and vassal, wherein any
moment it could go up in flames. It is rather built on
a strong foundation of a marriage covenant. So, too,
are we (the Church) the bride of Christ. And though
He will call us continually out of our infidelity, His
faithfulness to us never ends. In any human
relationship there is the possibility that infidelity
would end the relationship altogether. With God,
however, we are always called back no matter
where we are. Rather than being afraid of God,
then, we should turn back with confidence to the
faithful Spouse whose mercy endures forever.
