Introduction

The National Aboriginal Forestry Association is pleased to release the first printed edition of the National Aboriginal Forest Sector Directory. This directory profiles 150 Aboriginal forest-based businesses and Aboriginal organizations that support development of the Aboriginal forest sector. It is not a comprehensive listing of all companies and organizations as we estimate that there are 1200-1400 Aboriginal forest-based companies across the country of varying size and in varying stages of development. Therefore, we consider the directory to be work in progress as the listings will no doubt grow in number over time once the directory is distributed and its purpose becomes more evident to the potential users.

To promote Aboriginal business development in the forest sector is the broad purpose of the directory. Listings are limited to Aboriginal businesses including those owned by a First Nation or band, a Tribal Council, an entity representing an Aboriginal community, or individual Aboriginal persons, and may take the form of a sole proprietorship, a limited company, a co-operative, or a partnership or joint venture in which Aboriginal persons have at least 50 percent ownership. It also includes governmental and non-governmental organizations that have a mandate to support Aboriginal forest-based development. Essentially the directory is a marketing and reference tool intended to give increased visibility of the products and services of the listed companies. The added exposure provided by the National Aboriginal Forest Sector Directory will prove helpful in finding customers for the listed enterprises. It will help connect these enterprises with buyers, distributors and potential partners and contribute to growth and diversification in the Aboriginal forest economy.

For easy reference, the directory first lists companies by business categories which will mean that most companies will be listed in two or more categories. Secondly, the companies are listed alphabetically by province. In the second listing you will find more detailed information on the company as provided or approved by the company itself.

If your company is not included in this printed version and it meets the criteria provided in the previous paragraph, you can add your company profile through the on-line version of the directory at www.nafaforestry.org .

Lhtako Energy Corp. is a wood pellet plant that turns low-grade, mountain pine beetle-killed timber into wood pellets, a renewable source of bio-energy. This timber has been dead for several years and consists primarily of pulp-quality stands. Lhtako Energy Corp. is a partnership between the Lhtako Dene Nation and National Choice Bio Fuels.

The Lhtako Dene Nation has an agreement in place to harvest 75,000 cubic metres/year of mountain pine beetle-killed timber in the Quesnel Timber Supply Area for the next 15 years.

The Faculty’s innovative approach to natural resources education features an interdisciplinary ‘department-free’ structure, teaching across disciplines, and learning experiences that reflect complex, real-world problems. The undergraduate forestry program develops the knowledge, skills, and competencies required for professional forestry practice. The program exists as a Major in Forestry within the BSc in Natural Resource Management and is one of the most popular programs at UNBC. The Forestry Major is accredited by the Canadian Forestry Accreditation Board. A Cooperative Education option enhances the experience and professional develop-ment of many students in the program.

Unama’ki Institute of Natural Resources is an umbrella organization representing the five First Nation communities in Cape Breton. Munsee Tree will harvest and sell tree cuttings and biomass, as well as generate carbon credits that will be sold to large corporations to offset their greenhouse gas emissions. MERC’s mandate is to address environmental information needs including traditional knowledge, fish, wildlife, water quality and land management. The corporation provides quality, “ready to move” houses to First Nations communities and nearby cottagers at competitive rates, by allowing for quick delivery to customers. Located in a 15,000-square-foot shop in Kenora, the corporation is 51 per cent owned by Wabaseemoong Independent First Nations and has 20 employees. Area forestry mills, such as Domtar’s Ear Falls sawmill, Weyerhaeuser and Kenora Forest Products, provide building materials for the homes. The homes have a modular construction, with three or four bedroom design options and two-by-six walls. This means they can be transported in two halves to a site to be set on a foundation.

Mee-Toos Forest Products Ltd. continues to develop the forestry rights obtained by the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation in Northeastern Saskatchewan. With participation from the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation communities, Mee-Toos has successfully created and maintained forestry logging business and manages the Mee-Toos Forest Management Trust Fund Agreement.While logging and fence post production are the primary business today, plans are currently being revised to include additional manufacturing plants.
