October 13, 20 and 27Finding Christ in a secular society: Faith and reason in a modern worldA prominent Catholic philosopher recently kick-started an international debate with this question: “Why was it virtually impossible not to believe in God in, say, 1500 in our Western society, while in 2000 many find this not only easy but even inescapable?”In this class, we will seek to answer that question -- and many more. For example, what does it mean to live in a secular society? Just how different is our view of the universe and God from that of Christians just a few years ago? Why does faith flourish in some Western societies and not others? How are people integrating their Christian faith with their otherwise secular views? Daniel Bice will lead this three-week discussion and debate on the changing nature of faith and reason.

Your Help is Needed to Ship Food to El Salvador! Can You Help Us Raise $20,000? The Salvadoran Lutheran Church needs your help in the fight against hunger. Each year, the church depends on food shipments sent by St. Matthew’s to meet emergency food needs of struggling families and senior citizens. The shipments, which contain packets of nutritionally fortified rice, cost approximately $10,000 to ship (for over $50,000 worth of food). We hope to ship two containers of food in the next 6 months, with the next shipment occurring later this fall. If you can help us reach our goal of $20,000, please make a check to St. Matthew’s, and designate it for “El Salvador Food Shipment.”

A musical outreach event to help another church’s musical legacyJohn Paradowski offers Benefit Organ Recital at St. Francis Church, Milwaukee On All Saints Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 3:00 the pipes of the 1885 Wm. Schuelke organ at St. Francis of Assisi R.C. Church in Milwaukee (1927 N 4th Street; 4th and Brown) will sing to the strains of music of the period and beyond. John Paradowski is giving a benefit organ concert to help maintain this historic pipe organ from 1885. This organ has remained virtually untouched for over 125 years. Included on the program are works by composers of the era of the organ, sounds from this instrument that these composers would know intimately. What is even more intriguing in repertoire planning is finding the modern pieces that work on an historical instrument. So in a triptych in honor of All Saints Day/Sunday we hear music of contemporary composers. We even will dip into the musical waters of South America for a little Jazz. I hope you will be able to attend and enjoy the sounds of 1885 no matter when the music to be shared was written. Ample and secure parking is available next to the church.

URGENT: Third World Handcrafts Shoppe, located inside Capitol Drive Lutheran Church on 53rd and Capitol in Milwaukee, is desperately seeking additional volunteers. We are heading into our holiday season seriously short-staffed! If you or someone you know would like to join our friendly staff, we would appreciate the help! Third World Handcrafts Shoppe is a non-profit mission ministry, creating a marketplace for artisans from developing countries. We are open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:30-12:30 and Saturdays from 9:30-noon. Closer to the holidays, our store hours expand to 9:30-3:00 on those same days. We also have a need for volunteers to help with off-site sales at different churches throughout the metro area. The commitment is minimal (as little as one shift per month) and the work is not hard. Please contact Bridget Smith at [email protected] or 414-445-2065 to volunteer today!
