Introduction from James Poole, Executive Director

Thank you for your interest in the Director for People role at Wycliffe Bible Translators.

I have been Executive Director since 2014. It is a tremendous privilege to be serving such asignificant organisation in world mission today. Revelation 5:9 says that Jesus redeemed peoplefrom �every tribe and language and people and nation�, and yet still today 1 in 5 people worldwidedo not have the Bible in their language � a problem severely hampering evangelism anddiscipleship, church planting and church growth.

At Wycliffe we believe in universal access to God�s word: that all people should be able to engagewith the Bible in the language that speaks to them best. We have around 300 �members� workingalongside thousands of others with partners around the world to enable this, and we seek tosupport translation projects by raising prayer and financial support.

In view of the urgency of the task, we are currently seeking to significantly strengthen theorganisation to increase our impact. Our new branding launched publicly in July is just the visibletip of a substantial investment, including growing our staff team and migrating our IT systems (HRsystems plan to move to Workday in 2018).

As part of this, we are restructuring our Personnel Services department to create a new Peopledepartment. This team, led by the Director for People, will provide transformational HR leadershipthroughout the organisation. The Director for People role is a significant and exciting new position.The post holder, reporting directly to me, will be a member of our leadership team and will play amajor part in enabling all our people to work effectively and sustainably.

Our aim is to ensure the wellbeing of our people as well as, or better than any comparableorganisation in our network (Wycliffe Global Alliance), ensuring that our members are sustained intheir work, are working most effectively in the areas of greatest need, and are developing the skillsto meet future challenges; and to build and develop a highly skilled and motivated UK staff team.

About Wycliffe Bible Translators

We believe the Bible is the inspired word of God and that it is for all people everywhere speakingall languages. Today, however, there are still 1.5 billion people without a Bible in their ownlanguage. Wycliffe in the UK began in 1953. Since then huge progress has been made, and morepeople than ever before can know God in their language. Even so, over 160 million people stilldon�t have any Scripture in their mother tongue, not even a single verse.

We are part of the Wycliffe Global Alliance and within this network 6,000 members from over 60countries are involved in 78% of all translation projects going on today. In the UK we are the mainorganisation focusing on translating God�s word for language communities that are still waiting,and one of the largest people­sending mission agencies.

A fundamental part of our work involves promoting the ministry to churches and  enablingindividuals to become involved in translation projects and support roles by serving overseas, aswell as supporting independent Bible translation projects run by local people and organisations indifferent countries.

Our vision is to enable all peoples to engage with the Bible in a language that speaks to theirheart. We believe this is one of the most strategic challenges in world mission today:

Wycliffe peopleMembers assigned to partner organisationsOur members make up the majority of people serving with Wycliffe. These are people sent by theirchurches, and supported financially and in prayer by those churches and individual supporters.Typically, after a period of initial training in the UK, they relocate overseas to serve localcommunities by providing training, mentoring, and consultancy, in specialist areas such aslinguistics, literacy, and Scripture engagement�whatever is needed to enable communitytransformation through God�s word. Other members and volunteers serve with professional skillssuch as in finance, IT, and management roles, including in the senior leadership of our mainpartner organisations.

Many members serve with us for long periods, often exceeding 30 years. Increasingly, long termmembers return home and continue their work from a UK base, making the most of theopportunities afforded by Skype and email, and making regular trips overseas.

The day­to­day management and care of members is not provided by Wycliffe. Rather, membersaccept assignments with partner organisations, most often with SIL International (our key strategicpartner). This keeps local leadership at the appropriate level. But Wycliffe retains overallresponsibility and works closely with partners to ensure good outcomes, and we are seeking tosignificantly grow our capacity in this area.

There are currently around 300 members in active service with Wycliffe, including some who areassigned to the UK staff team.

The UK staff team

Our staff team is approximately 55 people (35 FTE), consisting of members, employees, andvolunteers. We have offices in Belfast and Edinburgh, and some staff work remotely, but themajority are based at the Clare Charity Centre in Saunderton, Buckinghamshire�a modern officein a beautiful rural location.

We describe ourselves as a celebratory, prayerful, professional and serving people united in ourlove of God�s word and our desire to see it reach everyone. We love to celebrate the small andlarge achievements both overseas and closer to home. We meet for prayer every day at 11.00 for20­30 minutes and don�t hesitate to stop and pray together if a need is brought to our attention.We desire to be more professional in all that we do, from our member/staff care and developmentto bringing our systems and processes up­to­date and being exemplary stewards of God�sresources. We seek to serve one another with humility and passion and don�t hesitate to �roll upour sleeves� to help one another when a deadline looms.

We are passionate about our people, whether employees, members, or volunteers, and desire tosee everyone flourish doing what they are gifted to do and being whom God created them to be.

In 2017, under James� leadership, there is an appetite for change and for taking a step up to be anew and more effective organisation. And there is an excitement about the future and what wemight achieve together as significant fresh investment in the organisation takes place in theexpectation of future growth.

The role of the Director for PeopleWe are seeking a passionate, strategic thinking and experienced HR leader to bring atransformational approach to human resources leading to organisational change anddevelopment. You will be a committed follower of Jesus Christ who is passionate about worldmission and passionate about people flourishing.

 You know how to get the best out of individuals, whether employed staff, members, or volunteers,with your inspiring and positive approach. And you�ll be a leader � able to identify and resolve keypeople issues; an influencer able to bring about cultural change; a natural team leader and astrategic thinker who enjoys the challenge of delivering innovative solutions for complex contexts.

 You will have a deep personal passion for world mission and be eager to collaborate with sendingchurches about the welfare of those on the mission field with Wycliffe. And you�ll be able tooversee with good judgement the lifecycle of HR functions for everyone serving with theorganisation in the UK and throughout the world.

Job DescriptionTitle:              Director for People

Team responsibility:  Approx 17 members of staff (8 FTE)

Location:          Saunderton, near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, UK

Context:      This new position has been created as part of a developing vision to enableWycliffe Bible Translators to achieve greater organisational effectivenessthrough those serving with the organisation (both the UK staff team andmembers assigned to partner organisations throughout the world).

Aim / Purpose:      To introduce a transformational approach to HR (in collaboration with partnerorganisations as necessary) to ensure that all members assigned to partnerorganisations are supported to achieve the greatest impact, working mosteffectively to meet the greatest needs.

To lead the development of Wycliffe�s people, culture and organisationalcapacity/effectiveness in order to empower all who serve with Wycliffe.

To significantly contribute to the corporate leadership of Wycliffe as amember of the Leadership Team.

Summary of role:    Support the Executive Director in enabling Wycliffe to become a globalleader within the Bible translation movement, leading organisational changewithin Wycliffe and in our partner organisations through a transformationalapproach to HR.

Key Responsibilities:

Organisation development

●    Lead the development and implementation of Wycliffe’s vision and strategy fororganisational effectiveness, transformation and growth through its people

●    Develop and support a culture of positive change and flexibility across the organisation●    Drive transformational leadership development across Wycliffe●    Work with the Executive Director and other members of the Leadership Team to champion

the culture and spirituality of the organisation ensuring the ethos and identity of Wycliffe ismaintained and developed

Serving our members assigned to partner organisations

●    Build good relationships with our members, collaborating with partner organisations tosupport the effective outworking of their ministry and service

●    Pioneer and develop a strategy for bringing agreed elements of excellent HR practice toenable our members assigned to partner organisations to thrive and flourish

● Lead the development and implementation of great peoplemanagement strategies to support those working overseas

● In collaboration with partner organisations, lead and inspire a cultureof learning and development with members, working creatively to findsolutions for implementation globally

● Collaborate with sending churches to encourage support andcommunication with members globally

● Develop a system of coaching and mentoring globally to provide anetwork of support and development

● Lead high quality global workforce strategic planning andimplementation to ensure the right people are in the right places at theright time

Serving our UK staff team

● Lead and develop a recruitment policy that attracts and develops anincreasingly talented, capable, high­performing and engaged staffteam (including employees, members, and volunteers)

● Enable high standards of people management and performanceacross Wycliffe making it a great place to work

● Lead the HR team in creating efficient and timely HR processes thatsupport best practice for recruitment, salary reviews and training anddevelopment

● Develop and improve a robust performance management/reviewprocess that continually enhances the performance of the staff teamtowards the aims and objectives of the organisation
