The Kimberley has a population of approximately 45,000 of whom approximately 52% are Aboriginal. Each town is unique and supports a different aspect of what makes the Kimberley so attractive.

Broome is located in the West Kimberley district ap proximately 2200km north of Perth, and is accessible via the Great Nor thern Highway or the North Coastal Highway. Broome can also be reached by air from most capital cities in Australia (via Perth).

What is it like to live in Broome?

Broome was established in 1883 as a pearling centre. Despite a well-developed tourism industry, the lifestyle in Broome remains relaxed and well equipped for individuals and families offering shopping centres, Saturday markets, as well as a range of restaurants and entertainment options such as indoor and outdoor cinemas, a golf club, a recreation centre which includes a pool, indoor stadium, outdoor and indoor netball/basketball courts, and squash and tennis courts.

Broome is host to a handful of annual festivals between March and October, and enjoys a variety of live entertainment on a weekly basis provided by performers from all around Australia as well as some very talented locals.

Broome has a lot to offer people who enjoy the beauty of nature and the great outdoors, and is home to the renowned 22km long Cable Beach. Broome also offers bushwalking trails and a fine landscape for 4WD and camping, and has a very active boating and fishing fraternity.

Public transport is available and operates on an hourly basis linking Chinatown with Cable Beach.

The weather in Broome is formed by the ‘wet’ and the ‘dry’ seasons. During the dry season (May—October) the temperature varies from the mid 20s to the low 30s and the humidity is low. The nights are cool with overnight temperatures averaging around 12 degrees. In the wet season (November—April) the temperatures are in the mid 30s, with overnight temperatures averaging around the mid 20s. The rain falls in generally short but heavy downpours and offer some spectacular sunsets and lightning shows.

About the community: Broome is a relatively ‘young’ town with an average age being in the 30s. It has a population of approximately 15,000 people, with almost half of this population being Aboriginal. The Yawuru people are the recognised Traditional Owners of Broome.

The wider Kimberley region is often described as one of the world's last great wilderness areas. Covering an expanse of nearly 423,000 square kilometres and, with an estimated population of just 30,000, it has fewer people per square kilometre than almost any other place on earth. The region has an immense and complex landscape that encompasses desert areas, spectacular gorges, sandy beaches, escarpments, rainforests, waterfalls, vast open plains, river valleys, cave systems and an amazing variety of wildlife.

Hospital services and facilities: Broome Hospital is a 40-bed inpatient facility and is the Regional Resource Centre for the Kimberley, supporting hospital facilities in Derby, Fitzroy Crossing, Halls Creek, Kununurra and Wyndham. Broome Hospital offer the following services; Emergency, Maternity, General Medical, Medical Imaging, Aged Care, Dental, Alcohol Rehabilitation, Aboriginal Health, Mental Health, Physiotherapy, Podiatry Day Surgery, Allied Health, Community Drug Service, and Ambulance.
