Directions for Assembly • This is by far the most important teaching tool that I utilize in my classroom every day!
• Whenever my students are writing (even during math) they take out their Word Books and they areforced to use conventional spelling.
• If my students need to spell a word, they first must look in their Word Books and use their blendingword strategy (decoding/stretching word strategies) to try and figure out what letters are in the word.Then they will check to see if the word they need is in the Word Book. If it is not in the book, I willwrite the correct spelling in their book or write the word on a Post-it note and they will transfer theword into their book on the correct page.
• To assemble this book, it would be best to make a master copy first.
• The file has been created with the middle of the book as the first slide. This is the page that will be inthe center fold once the Word Book is copied, folded and stapled in the center.
• This Word Book must be copied in a front-to-back manner. For example, page 3 and page 4 of this file(O and P pages) must be printed front-to-back. Page 5 and page 6 (N and Q pages) must be printedfront-to-back..and so on throughout the file. After each of the pages are copied in a front-to-backmanner, place the entire file in a photocopy machine and print the file so the book is collated andcopied front-to-back. Now you have a master copy.
• Or you can print this book on your personal printer by printing each page and then re-feeding thepage you printed into your printer to print the next page on the back.
• Then fold the whole Word Book on the center crease (only 15 pages thick) and use a heavy-dutystapler (a regular stapler will not work) to staple on the inside center crease to create a mini WordBook. I also add a piece of heavy duty card stock on the top as well just to make it stronger and moredurable to last the year. You could also laminate the first page of each book and then staple ittogether.
• The students will use this invaluable tool year round and have a strong grasp on conventional spellingsof the words they use in their writing.
