Direct Line Niagara Wheatfield Central School District March 2016 Spring is in the Air… The thaw of winter brings with it many new begin- nings and an excitement for sunshine and getting outdoors. Before we begin our spring routines it is important to reflect on our work from the past several months. Here are just a few of the highlights: The Little Mermaid The High School rendition of the Disney musical was outstanding. The performances of the leads were profes- sional and fun. Our actors and dancers in non-lead roles were equally impressive, as they clearly committed to their part. I would be remiss if I did not congratulate the stage crew, pit crew, and all of the adults who worked tirelessly to make the show a huge success. Winter Sports Both our Boys Varsity Bowling Team and Boys Var- sity Wrestling Team were Niagara Frontier League Cham- pions this year. As for the fall, each of our Varsity Sports teams qualified for Scholar Athlete Team Awards. Scholar Athlete Teams are selected based on a minimum number of participants achieving a 90% or above grade point average. It is a great achievement to have all of our fall sports teams qualify for this honor. Congratulations to all of our student- athletes! Niagara Wheatfield High SchoolProduction of....

The students of NW made a huge splash earlier this month when they performed Disney’s The Little Mermaid over the course of four performances March 10-13. The cast, crew, and pit band put on a spectacular show that was well attended.

This year, NWTA members Dave Curtis, Darla Bubar, and Christine Reiderer directed the production, while fellow NWTA members Nicholas Azzarella and Andrea Letcher worked behind the scenes on sets and costumes. NWSRP Vicki Paige handled production and alumnus Jackie Palmer-Dimino choreographed the show.

Cierra Mt. Pleasant truly captivated her audiences as the love struck mermaid who falls in love with a human, while Billy Gerst shined in his role as Prince Eric. His sidekick, Grims-by played by Dean Brown, added a wonderful stage presence and a bit of humor along the way. Gina Brown added to drama with her incredible performance as the sea witch, Ursula and Tim Brown commanded the thrown convincingly as the lordly King Tri-ton. Gabby Iacona (Flounder), Joe Dorato (Scuttle), and Guiliano Pupo (Sebastian) each brought their characters to life and often had the audience in stitches with their amazing stage presence and humor. Danielle Kaminski and Danielle Scholl worked mag-nificently as the sinister Flotsam and Jetsam along side their “queen”, Ursula. The six mersisters played by Danielle Kamin-ski, Danielle Scholl, Emma Asklar, Troy Smith, Harley Flecken-stein, and Kirsten Bowers and Chef Louis played by John Tober, rounded out the leading roles giving lively and entertaining perfor-mances. Add to all that the rest of the talented cast, hardworking and dedicated crew and musically gifted pit and... It was a show

stopper!

Kelsey and Lindsay Tylec are True Falcons!

The ETMS and entire Niagara Wheatfield community would like to thank Kelsey (6th grader at ETMS) and Lindsay Tylec (2nd grader at Errick Road) for their hard work to help one of their own classmates. Each year during the holiday season, Kelsey and Lind-say organize a bottle and can drive in their neighborhood. The mon-ey that they raise is donated to a charity of their choice. This year, after Kelsey heard about the struggles of one of her fellow middle schoolers, Ginny Fagard, she decided that the sisters would do-nate what they earned to Ginny’s family. As most of our community knows, Ginny continues to fight her battle with brain cancer. The girls raised an incredible $1,100!!! That’s a lot of cans and bottles! Thank you to Kelsey and Lindsay Tylec for showing us all what it truly means to be a falcon!

A veteran or soldier’s Valentine’s Day was made a little bit brighter, thanks to Mrs. Jones’ seventh grade Writing Skillfully stu-dents. The students had a taste of writing for the real world when they created cards and wrote notes that were sent to local Veteran’s Hospitals and to deployed soldiers. Mrs. Jones teamed up with Mrs. Farnham, a retiree from Edward Town Middle School, who had a connection to the local VA Hospitals and deployed units. The cards had words of encouragement, appreciation, and a funny joke to bring a smile to the soldier’s or veteran’s face. “It is important for students to write for a real audience,” Mrs. Jones explains. “It motivates stu-dents to know that a person besides their teacher will be reading their words. Students often take their work more seriously, writing several drafts before they are satisfied that they have communicated effectively and that there are no errors in spelling and punctuation.” Words are powerful, and using them to show appreciation to soldiers, past and present, is certainly as real as it can get.

The ETMS Spirit Club sponsored a food drive for the Food Bank of Western New York. All food items will be sent to food pan-tries to support families in Niagara County. Ten large collection barrels overflowed with generous donations from students and staff. The club also sponsored a “Gobble Grams” card and candy fundraiser and a Hat Day to raise money for local families in need.

The students at Colonial Village were treated to a visit by members of the Buffalo Bandits Lacrosse Team to kick off their PBIS initiative. PBIS is a program that includes proactive behav-ioral strategies for defining, teaching and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create a positive learning environment. The school’s “Falcon” Fundamentals center on the word S.O.A.R., which stands for Safety, Ownership, Attitude and Respect. Stu-dents can earn a feather from a staff member for exhibiting any of those traits. Any student who earns a feather for each of them (Safety, Ownership, Attitude and Respect) will get their photo tak-en and placed on the Wall of Honor in the gymnasium. Principal Kami Halgash will also be visiting classrooms and pulling a feather out of the class nest to award a prize to a deserving student.

Miss Culligan’s Art Students Show Off Their Work at ETMS

7th grader Anthony Lucinski shows off his “op art” pattern he made with a sharpie marker on a grid that was then cut out and folded into an “origami” box!

8th grader Mackenzie Jacobs with her ceramic planter. Students created clay pockets that can be filled with dirt and plants and hung on a wall.

8th grader Jessica Maroney posing with her ceramic creation. She sculpted it in Miss Culligan’s class out of clay before it was fired, glazed and fired again.

8th Grader Eric Owens poses with his “hot air balloon”. Students wove strips of paper to make the basket. Primary-colored pieces of cellophane were placed between the paper balloon shapes so that when the balloon moves in front of a window you can see how the primary colors blend to make the secondary colors.

7th graders Rachel Parnella and Emma Halleen working on their “warm/cool” grid project.

8th grader Danielle Carlson holds her ceramic lion “relief” painting. The lion’s head was made of clay, fired and glazed then glued to a cardboard background in “relief”-style so that it appears to be coming out of the painting towards the viewer.

Errick Road School Holds Compassion Assembly

The December Assembly at Errick Road Elementary School was about the character trait of compassion. Invited to the assembly was the Niagara Wheatfield Boys’ Varsity Hockey Team, Robyn Swan from the Jump Rope for Heart and a special guest, Niagara Wheatfield’s mascot, the Falcon. The Falcon got these started by dancing in the audience on getting the students pumped up for the assembly.

Next, the Jump Rope Team performed a high-energy and skilled skit about showing a new student compassion. The performance wowed the audience with Principal Nora O’Bryan saying it was the best perfor-mance she had seen at the school. The students have been practicing their jump rope skills since October. Robyn Swan talked to the students about the American Heart Association and thanked the students for raising over $10,000 last year!

After that performance the Boys’ Varsity Hockey Team took the stage. The Hockey team has won four straight Section Six Championships!

The players demonstrat-ed kindness and compas-sion by read-ing to the k i n d e r g a r -ten and first grade class-es and talk-ing to third graders about being student athletes, teamwork and responsibility. All the hockey players were former Errick Road Elementary graduates. Mrs. Hayes said how nice it was to see the boys all grown up and what a great way to promote school spirit in the district. The assembly was coordinated by Mr. Anthony Vekich

and Mrs. Marianna Hayes, who are Physical Education teachers at the school.

Long track speed skater, Fletcher Codd, a Junior at Lake Placid High School and former Niagara Wheatfield student, recently placed 4th at Junior Nationals in Milwaukee, Wisconsin narrowly missing out on a spot on the US Junior World Team. The next weekend he bounced back and won the overall men’s title at the Jack Shea Sprints in Lake Placid NY. Fletcher was the first skater to break 40 seconds in the 500m on the Lake Placid oval since 2010! Fletcher is such a committed and gifted athlete and as such made the decision to transfer from Niagara Wheatfield following his Freshman year, leaving his family, in order to train in Lake Placid. Like his family, we are so proud of Fletcher and his amazing accomplishments. Pictured with Fletcher is 1960 Olympian Jim Shea, son of the 1932 multiple Gold Medal winning Jack Shea.

West Street Fifth Graders Debate Pros and Cons of Chocolate Milk

Mr. Rob Udy’s fifth grade class at Niagara Wheatfield’s West Street School had an interesting challenge recently. The students were given an assignment of having a chocolate milk panel discussion and whether or not it should be sold in schools. Students chose a position on the topic and Mr. Udy gave the students parameters for the presentations such as understanding the topic from multiple perspectives, researching the topic thoroughly, collecting facts and preparing questions, documenting their sources, writing a thesis and preparing a presentation for the judges.

Twelve volunteers judged the students’ presentations including one of the student’s grandmothers, Judy Rice. “It was an amaz-ing experience for all of us. Mr. Udy has a very creative hands-on approach to teaching and making learning fun for the kids. They don’t even realize they are learning! All the students delighted and amazed us with their logic, creativity, passion and persuasiveness.”

Student Madison cited that chocolate milk is ex-cellent for helping muscles recover after a workout and told the judges that she “cringed when I think of kids buy-ing something besides chocolate milk , like Gatorade or soda that are packed full of sugar and carbs.” Her class-mate Jacob took the opposite stance and made a chart to show that 114,000 pounds of sugar are consumed in 15 servings of chocolate milk per week and could be likened to a dump truck containing 57 tons of sand.

At the end of the presentations the vote for if chocolate milk should be sold in school cafeterias was eight in favor and four against. “The skills that have been showcased by Mr. Udy’s fifth graders are skills used by high school and college students,” said West Street Prin-cipal Theron Mong. “These students showed an amazing ability to organize their thoughts and use of logical, pas-sionate and persuasive communication to help us under-stand a difficult subject.” Mrs. Rice added, “The vote this year I think shows that we are gaining more understand-ing of some of the problems with sugar. Last year the vote was 12 to 1. Mr. Udy and his class should be com-mended for a job well done. We are proud of all of them.”

Colonial Village K Kids did an amazing job collecting donations for The Ronald McDonald House in Buffalo NY. The kids worked very hard to let the entire school know what an amazing project it was! The 5th grade students spoke in classrooms about the importance of helping others and how the Ronald McDonald house is a tremendous force for assisting those in need. The students made “Grab-n-Go bags” which contained a bottled water and 2 snacks for parents in a hurry to get to the hospital. They made fleece blankets to keep the residents warm and also collected home cleaning items and cannedgoods for the house. Due to the student’s ages they would not be allowed to visit the Ronald McDonald House. Teach-ers and staff went on January 29th and cooked dinner for the residents at the house and brought all of the donations the kids had raised. Co-lonial Village Elementary School is proud to be engaged in the com-munity by volunteering and collect-ing donations for various organiza-tions throughout the year!

The whole mission of the K-Kids organization at West Street School is to develop caring leaders in the com-munity. Recently the K-Kids decided to fundraise for the Susan G. Komen foundation because breast cancer had affected so many staff members at the elementary school, as well as family members of the students. “One of our 3rd grade teachers, who is the mother of one of our K-Kids, just had surgery for breast cancer,” says program advisor Lenore Palmeri. “So, it was all their idea and I just super-vised.”

The Susan G. Komen Foundation’s mission is to save lives and end breast cancer forever. The money they raised goes towards educating, research, advocating for better breast cancer policy and offering grants that provide financial and emotional assistance.

The students threw a pizza party and raised over $240. “Their effort was tremendous,” said Ms. Palmeri. “All of them gave 150% from planning, set-up, handling the fi-nances and cleaning up afterwards.” Larissa East, a Com-munity Outreach and Administrative Specialist for Susan G. Komen, says she was impressed with the fifth graders ef-forts. “I thought it was awesome. The money will definitely be used for education and research.”

A very generous donation was made to the Niagara Wheatfield Second-ary Library in memory of our beloved French teacher, Mrs. Karen D’Angelo. An anonymous patron donated the book, The Best Loved Villages of France, by Stephane Bern. The book takes the read-er to some of France’s most treasured lo-cations. It’s such an appropriate memory for one of our most treasured teachers.

Mrs. Myers FACS Class Learns About Healthier Food Choices

Students have been learning about nutrition in Mrs. Myers’ FACS class. Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, students have been learning about making healthier food choic-es that will keep them full and energized for the day. In one cooking lab students made omelets as a healthier choice because they are packed with protein from eggs and are quick and easy to make, not to mention fun! In their most recent lab they made parfaits. Along with learning why par-faits are a healthier food choice due to their pro-tein, fats, and complex carbs, students also got the added bonus of learning and speaking a bit of french due to the fact that parfait is a french word that means “perfect” and parfait for breakfast it is!

The Tuscarora Native American School had some guests from the Western New York Independent Living, Inc. and OAHIIO, Native American Independent Living Services recently. It was combined and integrated with the character edu-cation program, according to June Van Every-Huber, the school’s Social Worker. “I think all kids should be exposed to all cultures, all disabilities because at any given time they are going to meet with people from all different walks of life. The sen-sitivity training helps them to be respectful of people and to know they have had a struggle and what that struggle might have involved. It teaches them to be more aware and to be a good human being. “ Cynthia Printup-Harms, the Program Director of OAHIIO, Native American Independent Living Services (Satellite of Independent Living of Niagara County), says, “We work with the students on sensitivity training and dis-ability awareness. The students will get to experience what it’s like to not be able to see. We will also be ad-dressing mental illness and other disabilities. We want them to see a disability is anything that impacts the qual-ity of their life.” Todd Vaarwerk, the Director of Advocacy and Public Policy at WNY Independent Living, Inc., talked the students through an exercise where they would be put into pairs. One of the students would be blindfolded and their partner would talk them through making a paper airplane. Many of the students discussed how they felt frustrated and scared not being able to see. Mr. Vaarwerk said the goal of the exercise it to teach them empathy and see what someone who is blind feels. “Today is about empathy and thinking about how people feel.” He reminded the children that words have power and to be careful what words they use to describe someone. “You should have respect for every single person and care about how they feel.”

Students Darien Bonaccorso (Stylist) and Kaitlyn Downie (Model), who are in the Cosmetology Program at the Niagara Career and Technical Education Center, wowed the audience at the annual runway show recently. The students are in Cathy Bonaccorso’s class and local cosmetology experts who judged the competition declared them winners in the Evening hairstyle category.

From egg crash car to Rube Goldberg, students in Technology class are challenged to build skills and understanding. The Rube Gold-berg assignment is tremendously intricate and demands creative thinking on the part of the stu-dents. They are called upon to think “outside the box.” Prior to the start of the project, students analyzed the mechanics behind simple ma-chines in order to cultivate ideas for the design of their work. Within small groups, students then constructed multiple contraptions that could be linked together to form a chain reaction. Stu-dents provided innovative inventions assembled with everyday objects that ultimately would per-form simple tasks. Rube Goldberg was the creator of the “Rube Goldberg Machine. “ He spent years in cartoon artistry and possessed a passion for precision in technology. Goldberg’s complex creation has influenced many and he is credited with sparking an evolution of creativity.

Colonial Village 5th Grade Students in Congress?

Colonial Village 5th Grade Students in Congress? The Students couldn’t make the trip to Washington, to see our Gov-ernment in action, so they did the next best thing…they formed their own Government! The students began by studying the Constitution. The learned about each part of the Constitution, from the Preamble to the Amendments. They then learned what it takes for an idea to become a law. Now they simply needed to see this process in action. Students wrote persuasive essays which tried to per-suade their classmates to vote for them as class Governor. They presented their essays to the classes and elections were held. Each class had their own Governor. The Governor would take grievances to the teacher for resolution on behalf of the entire class.

Now the Governor’s ran for 5th grade President. The Executive Branch of 5th grade would be responsible to handle issues that impact the entire grade. Speeches were once again presented and elections held. CV’s 5th grade class congratulated President Brielle Lum, Vice-President Andrew Rutland and Secretary of State Alana Hall.

Now it was time for action! Students became members of the Senate or the House of Representatives. It was there task to come up with a Bill that would handle issues related to recess. What would recess look like? Who would be eli-gible? What responsibilities would the students have? Each house met and debated, discussed and debated again. Fi-

nally, each house created a Recess Bill. This Bill included such items as students must have all of their work done and turned in before they could have recess. Students would have to sit out 5 minutes for each sheet of owed work or until the work was completed. Work had to be quality. A Joint Meeting of Congress was next. The meeting was held, the bills were discussed and debated. At long last, Congress came to an agreement, it was now up to Executive Branch to sign the Bill into Law. The 2015-2016 Recess Bill became Law December 18, 2015!
