RESEARCH FINDINGS

High suspension rates occur in schools where extensive amounts of time are spent on discipline related matters (Davis & Jordan, 1994)

Social, emotional and mental health support for students in schools can decrease the need for suspension and expulsion (Committee on School Health, 2003)

A range of resources are necessary to support students and decrease the likelihood that students will engage in behaviors requiring disciplinary action (Committee on School Health, 2003)

A DN SCHOOL FOR THE 2011 – 2012 SCHOOL SESSION

• Good News!!!– Significant Reductions in Suspensions from 2011 to 2012– Last school year 48.8% of unique regular education

students and 29.9% of special education students were suspended

– This school year 16% of unique regular education and 8% of unique special education students were suspended

• Difference of 32.8% for regular education students• Difference of 21.9% for ESS• Less than 10% of ESS students with 2 or more Fs

• De-escalation – workshops conducted by Dr. A. Sorrell– Staff / Student(s)– Student / Student

• Behavior Support – Internal and External– Internal from resources in the school such as school

counselors, CIS– External from resources such as DN consultants like Dr.

PBIS SUPPORTS

• Universal Screeners – All students screened and tiered during the first quarter

• Check In / Check Out – conducted by Dean of Students for Tier 2 students

• Classroom Management Plans – due from all teachers the first week of school

• Training for all faculty and staff (provided by DN)• Data consistently analyzed to determine next

steps

STRATEGIES…

THERAPY GROUPS

• CKAP Social Skills Group – students with School Building Level Committee (SBLC) recommendations from 4th to 6th grade

• Conflict Resolution Groups – 8th grade students who were involved in multiple fights

• Behavior Incentive Groups – 6th grade students who have been suspended or sent to the Time Out Room (TOR) multiple times

• Individual Counseling – 30 students counseled on an ongoing basis

• Crisis Intervention Support – as needed
