As the College Principal at BIMM Institute Brighton, I know that choosing the right place to study and nurture your talent is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make. I understand this personally because before I began my career, I knew that I wanted to make music my life. And I knew that where I decided to study was going to be a big part of my success.

I was fortunate enough to choose a place thatinspired me and opened up paths to the musiccareer I have today; one that has included workingwith Ronnie Wood, Mick Jagger, Procol Harumand Slash. All this has, in turn, led me toworking at BIMM Institute – Europe’s leading provider of contemporary music education.

When I moved to Brighton and started teaching atBIMM Institute, it felt like a city I could not only continue my music and education career in, but because of the community the BIMM Institute students and staff create, it quickly felt like home. Brighton’s vibrant creative scene, our connections to the wider creative industries such as Performing Arts, Film and TV, the countless venues, festivals and a beach that’s definitely the place to hang out in the summer, are just the start of what you need to know about before making that decision yourself.

Since BIMM Institute Brighton was established 18 years ago, I’ve seen first-hand how our fantastic teamof industry professional lecturers have inspiredand taught the musicians, creatives and musicindustry entrepreneurs of the future to go on tobigger and better things.

I continue to work in the music industry like allthe lecturers at BIMM Institute, but with an added passion and focus in passing on the knowledge, skills and connections to the next generation of aspiringmusic industry professionals, creatives andperformers. Hello. My name is Mark Crawford and I’m the Further Education Centre Manager at BIMM Institute Brighton.

I’ve been working in music education and the music industry for over twenty years. Our music diploma offers vocational training from a wide range of current music industry professionals.

Student Success——

George EzraGeorge Ezra joined BIMM Bristol in 2011. He studied Songwriting and was signed to Columbia Records less than a year later. The BRIT Awards winner was also responsible for the biggest-selling album in the UK in 2018.

His debut single ‘Budapest’ reached No.3 in the charts and attained platinum status. Plus, his debut album Wanted on Voyage hit No.1 and sold over one million copies in the UK alone.

His second studio album, Staying at Tamara’s (which features the No.1 single ‘Shotgun’), reached No.1 in the UK.

Ella Mai Grammy Award winner, Billboard Music Awards winner and BRIT Award nominee, Ella Mai joined our BIMM London Vocals course in 2014. Since leaving BIMM, Ella has become the first British artist in 26 years to score a No.1 single on the US R&B chart. She was also handpicked by Bruno Mars to join him as a support act on his 24K Magic tour finale.

Her No.1 single ‘Boo’d Up’ knocked Drake’s ‘Don’t Matter to Me’ off the top spot in the US R&B chart before winning Ella a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song in 2019.

Shortly after the release of her self-titled debut album in late 2018, Ella signed a global record deal with Sony/ATV. Today, she is a major musical force to be reckoned with across the globe.

Jon Beavis (IDLES) BIMM Bristol drum graduate Jon Beavis is the drummer for IDLES – and one of Music Radar’s ‘13 Best Rock Drummers in the World 2018’. He features alongside Queen’s Roger Taylor, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Smashing Pumpkins’ Jimmy Chamberlin. Beavis and IDLES have released not one but two critically acclaimed albums (Brutalism and Joy as an Act of Resistance), with the latter peaking at No.2 in The Official UK Albums Chart.

IDLES were nominated for Best Breakthrough Act at the 2019 BRIT Awards and later won the 2019 Kerrang! Award for Best British Breakthrough Act. Most recently, IDLES were on the shortlist for the prestigious Mercury Prize 2019, alongside the likes of Cate Le Bon, The 1975 and fellow BIMM graduates Fontaines D.C.

Napsugár BardóczHailing from Budapest, Napsugár completed her Event Management degree at BIMM Brighton in 2018 and is now working as an Assistant Artist Manager at Everybody’s Management, whose roster includes Jack Garratt, Keane and Gretta Ray, amongst others. She also independently manages Brighton based singer-songwriter Miles Goodall and has been a promoter representative for Sziget Festival Ltd in Hungary for three years running.

At BIMM Brighton, Napsugár helped to organise and run events at legendary Brighton venues such as Concorde II and The Old Market. She was also an indispensable member of our UK festival team, working at The Great Escape and 2000trees.

Mercy SotireKnown in Bristol as a hugely charismatic live performer, Mercy and her band – Mercy’s Cartel – have performed at festivals such as Glastonbury, Kendal Calling, We Out Here and the main stage at The Downs.

Mercy is a Bristol-based singer-songwriter and producer, with sonic influences stemming from alternative R&B and hip-hop.

Whilst at BIMM, Mercy has developed a strong network. She has also been recognised by funding bodies such as PRS, Help Musicians and MOBO.

Fontaines D.C.BIMM Dublin graduates and alternative post-punk quintet Fontaines D.C. have been riding a wave of success – most recently bagging the No.2 spot in the Official UK Albums Chart with their second album A Hero’s Death.

Since graduating from BIMM, they’ve toured internationally extensively. Their first album Dogrel charted at No. 9 in 2019 and received critical acclaim, winning album of the year from both Rough Trade and BBC Radio 6 Music.

Speaking on behalf of the band, drummer Tom Coll described the importance of the band’s experience at BIMM Dublin: “Our time at BIMM was a really formative one in that we felt like we had the authority to call ourselves musicians and be confident in that identity.”

Michael BowesHead of Further Education and Programme Leader, Music Performance Year OneMichael is a world-class drummer who has performed with artists including Nelly Furtado, Joss Stone, Tears For Fears, Amerie, Mario, Heather Small (M People), Alfred ‘Pee Wee’ Ellis (James Brown), Michelle Gayle, Black Legend and B.L.O.W. Michael is currently in the driving seat for New Wave/Punk band The Vapors of ‘Turning Japanese’ fame. He has performed on many live TV shows in the UK and Europe, including Top of the Pops, SMTV Live, CD:UK, MTV, VH1, GMTV and the Jerry Springer Show.

Amaziah DavisProgramme Leader, Songwriting Extended DiplomaAmaziah is a professional writer, arranger, bassist, trombone, sousaphone, helicon and hose pipe player with numerous bands playing ska, reggae, blues, rock, funk, jazz funk, salsa, classical and Eastern European gypsy music, to name a few. He has also written and arranged music for film and television.

Dani Wilde Programme Leader Level 2, Modern MusicAfter graduating with a first-class degree in Vocals from BIMM Institute in 2005, singer, guitarist and songwriter Dani signed to prestigious blues record label Ruf Records and has spent the past seven years touring across Europe, Canada and America.

Zoe MartinProgramme Leader, Music Production and Live Sound EventsZoe is a Front Of House and Monitor engineer with 10 years of industry experience. She established herself working locally as an in-house engineer in venues across Brighton and has since toured globally with many prestigious acts. Her clients include Bonobo, Maverick Sabre, James Arthur, UB40 (feat. Ali Campbell),

Radiophonic Workshop and Ratatat.

Pippa MoyleProgramme Leader, Music Performance Year 2

Pippa is the founder of the fast-growing network for women in the UK, the City Girl Network, helping women to connect in their cities through events, publishing and online media. She has built a career centred around creative communications, from music journalism and PR, to events, content marketing and digital design.

RSL Level 3 Subsidiary/Extended Diploma in the Creative Music Industry (Performance Pathway)

Become a high-level performer in control of your own career path with our exciting vocational course. Equivalent to three A-Levels, this course provides a brilliant grounding for understanding modern music and the fast-moving industry surrounding it – while pushing your discipline to the next level.

During this two-year course, you’ll develop both the academic and creative qualities found in all well-rounded music professionals. You’ll focus on performance skills, styles, technique, theory, aural perception and career-focused goal setting. You’ll also understand the music business as a whole, taking an in-depth look into aspects such as royalties, copyright and collection societies.

You’ll learn in a highly creative environment and form strong connections with fellow aspiring musicians, songwriters and entrepreneurs. As part of the course, you’ll also work on a Collaborative Music Project, seeing a team idea transform from concept to completion. BIMM Institute’s expert lecturers – all of whom are prominent music industry professionals with years of experience – will guide you towards your personal study goals and dream future career.

Level 3 Extended Diploma inSongwriting——RSL Level 3 Subsidiary/Extended Diploma in the Creative Music Industry (Composition Pathway)

Kick-start your career as a creative professional in the music industry with this exciting, vocational two-year course, equivalent to three A-Levels.

Throughout the course, you’ll focus on songwriting techniques, music production, improving performance skills, understanding musical styles and arrangements, and ear training. You’ll connect with the industry from day one, learning how to get yourself noticed and building your songwriting and performance abilities to a professional level.

As well as perfecting your Songwriting skills, you’ll learn about music business and employability – and how you can prepare for a future within this fast-moving, inspiring industry. You’ll also learn relevant studio skills and techniques to help support and realise your creative ambitions.

Each day, you’ll build upon your knowledge and skill set in a collaborative, creative environment surrounded by other songwriters, aspiring musicians, and entrepreneurs. Our BIMM Institute lectures will also teach you to the highest standards possible. Each BIMM lecturer has years of experience within the music business and will guide you in achieving your professional goals.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Production——

RSL Level 3 Subsidiary/Extended Diploma in the Creative Music Industry (Production pathway)

If you have a passion for creative music production, this two-year vocational course is for you.

On this course that’s equivalent to three A-Levels, you’ll develop your own music production style, improve your technique, and steadily build your confidence towards that of a professional music producer. You’ll also know how to get yourself noticed by the right people in the business.

Whether you’re writing hip hop, electro-pop or cinematic compositions for media, our Music Production Diploma will help you develop the technical skills to realise your creative ideas. During your studies, you’ll look at a wide range of production techniques and applications. You’ll also study Audio Mixing, Live Sound Recording, Composition for Media, Music Business and Career Development. And you won’t do it alone. You’ll collaborate creatively with other producers, musicians, and entrepreneurs. Plus, our expert lecturers – all of whom are experienced music industry professionals themselves – will support and guide you the whole way.

On this one-year course, you’ll receive expert tuition in playing your instrument while developing live performance skills.

Progression RouteThe Level 2 Diploma is a great gateway to either taking your first steps in a music industry career or continuing with study in the form of a Level 3 Diploma at BIMM Institute or eventually a BIMM Institute degree.

Entry RequirementsTwo GCSES at grade D/3 or above and grade 3 equivalent playing skills. You will be required to attend an audition to determine your playing level.

EU applicants holding status under the EU Settlement Scheme (settled or pre-settled) will need to provide an academic IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 to be achieved in each band.

Get Connected at BIMM Institute ——

BIMM Institute holds regular networking events which are a great opportunity to meet other students from different courses that have similar musical interests. Not only are they a fantastic way to find new friends and swap some phone numbers, but they are also a good place to start finding band members.

BIMM Institute GigsOnce you’ve got your band together and had some rehearsals, you can audition for one of BIMM Institute’s end-of-term gigs. We hold two a term and utilise the amazing venues that are on our doorstep.

Additionally, we hold termly gigs. These are ticketed events with all proceeds going to one of BIMM Institute’s nominated charities. These are a great opportunity for students to get some live performance experience and put on a brilliant show for their peers, friends and families.

BIMM Institute PlaylistThe BIMM Institute Playlist is a showcase of BIMM’s best talent. Students submit their demos, which are then reviewed by our experienced Artist Development Team and a panel of industry experts.

The artists included in the final selection will be professionally recorded and their work will be distributed on all major streaming platforms, plus iTunes.

Careers and Industry Team Your career in music starts at BIMM Institute and we have a dedicated Careers and Industry Team who are looking forward to working with you.

We support the next generation of music performers and professionals in a number of ways. If you are a performer or songwriter, you will be invited to artist development tutorials where you will be advised on recording, gigs, your digital profile, photography, videos and promotion.

For industry professionals, there are numerous exciting placements at companies, labels, promoters, publishers, PRs and magazines. Book a Careers tutorial to get advice on your CV or on starting your own business. We also have a well-established festival programme, which includes Glastonbury and The Great Escape. There are plenty of opportunities for you to get involved.

We want to make your time at BIMM Institute Brighton as easy and comfortable as possible, so we have educational and pastoral support teams dedicated to helping you get the most out of your study experience.

Student WelfareBIMM Institute is dedicated to monitoring the welfare of all our students, in particular those who are under the age of 18. We have a strong Safeguarding and PREVENT policy and are committed to ensuring that parents/guardians are kept informed of all important information throughout the course, including attendance concerns and academic feedback.

We also hold a Parents’ Information Evening in Term 1, where we will provide further information about the course and progression routes (including UCAS applications) and an additional Parents’ Evening in Term 2 where parents can discuss their child’s progress on the course with lecturers and the Student Support team.

Student Support ServicesWe are committed to helping you fulfil your potential during your time at BIMM Institute. We place emphasis on supporting the development of our students, both academically and personally.

With this in mind, the Student Support team is available at every step of the student journey to offer confidential support and guidance on issues such as stress, smoking, alcohol, drugs, depression, anxiety issues, disability and learning support, family/friendship/relationship problems and eating disorders, as well as ongoing academic and practical learning support and advice.

We also offer a wide range of additional support services that are designed to meet students’ academic and welfare needs, as well as enrich the BIMM Institute Brighton experience.

Pastoral SupportThe Student Support team is available for one-to-one tutorial sessions for students to discuss any issue they may be struggling with. These are strictly confidential and can include any topic, ranging from personal issues, attendance and auditions, booking in for one of the services or any special considerations we may need to take into account for your course and/or exams. The Student Services office can be accessed by students and we encourage you to book an appointment to see us at any time.

Academic Tutorials and Professional DevelopmentStudents are encouraged to book regular one-to-one tutorials to work on technique, master their academic writing, discuss their development and plan their long/short-term career goals.

Tutorials give students a unique opportunity to be individually guided by the most experienced industry professionals in the country.

Disability and Learning SupportWe have an excellent Learning Support provision for those with additional support requirements.

If you indicate on your application and/or pre-enrolment form that you require further support, a member of the Student Support team will contact you before the start of the course to arrange an individual consultation. If you have any reports or paperwork relating to your disability or additional support requirements, please attach these to your application.

We work with students with a wide range of disabilities, including but not restricted to:

• Specific learning difficulties (such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD)

• Autistic spectrum disorders (including Asperger syndrome)

• Mental health difficulties (such as depression and bipolar disorder)

• Long-term medical conditions (such as HIV, Crohn’s disease and multiple sclerosis)

• Unseen disabilities (such as diabetes, asthma and epilepsy)

• Sensory impairments (such as visual impairment and hearing impairment)

• Mobility or physical impairments (such as paralysis and arthritis)

CounsellingBIMM Institute Brighton offers counselling to any student in need of the service via an external professional practice. This free and confidential provision offers individuals the opportunity to explore a wide range of emotional and psychological issues. The counselling service provided is hugely experienced and abides by the British Association for Counselling Code of Ethics.

Please note: We do not have an Educational Psychologist in-house. If an Educational Psychologist report is required we can refer, but these reports do incur a charge of approximately £350.

2.Auditions and InterviewsOnce we’ve received your application form, we’ll contact you to invite you toattend an audition and/or interview. On the day of your audition/interview we will then either make you an offer of a place or suggest how you can develop your skills further to meet the required standard. Please try not to leave your application to the last minute as courses do fill up very quickly and we’d hate for you to be disappointed.

3. Performance and SongwritingIf you’re applying for one of our performance-based courses and are a UK-based student, we’ll expect you to have an audition. All BIMM Institute auditions for Performance (Guitar, Bass, Drums and Vocals) and Songwriting courses are free of charge and include an hour-long introductory presentation, which provides valuable information about our courses, the music industry and BIMM’s ethos, aims and philosophy.

During your individual audition we’ll discuss your personal aspirations and the ways in which we can help you to achieve your goals.
