Project orientation
(26-28 July ‘09: Hotel Global Chitwan)
3-days project orientation workshop was organized. Thirty-two (32) participants took part in the orientation.
The workshop was organized only after key project staffs are recruited
The PNGO head, AAN resource center PO and project staffs are ensured in the orientation
Lecture, anticipatory group discussion, presentation, question/answer gaming, documentary show and plenary discussion were some of the methods used in the orientation
Project team members, PNGOs are informed about project approach, activities, budget and implementation modality.
Detailed work plan for the project period was finalized respective of all partners.
Reflect Training of Trainers
(8-15 Aug ‘09: VDRC Gaidakot)
8-days Reflect TOT was organized. Twenty-two (22) field staffs including all the Reflect facilitators took part in ToT.
It was ensured all the Reflect facilitators were recruited and able to attend TOT
All the reflect facilitators and other few new staffs participated in the training
The training was conducted in highly participatory method
Reflect facilitators are regularly conducting the reflect sessions.
They have become social change agents and resource persons for the community action and mobilization

Reflect Refresher Training
(11-13 Dec ‘09: Hotel Wildlife Resort Bardiya)
3-days refresher course of REFLECT emphasizing on facilitation methods, PVA data use and CCA integration completed for 15 Reflect facilitators.
The Reflect facilitators were provided with skills on using PVA tools during REFLECT sessions
Practices and feedback on REFLECT sessions were done
REFLECT facilitators capacity to organize, mobilize and aware communities have been enhanced.
Improved skills in conducting REFLECT sessions and community work
Participatory Vulnerability Analysis (PVA) Training
(17-21 Aug ‘09: Hotel Manashanta Ithari)
5-days PVA training organized. Twenty-four (24) field staffs were trained.
Field mobilizer, Reflect Facilitators and Project Coordinators were selected as the participants.
The training was facilitated through various methodologies including lecturer, brain storming, group discussions, case studies, field practice and demonstration.
All the training participants were used as PVA facilitators during PVA application
PVA field application was carried out successfully in Sunsari and Banke.
PVA resource persons developed locally.
PVA training to Practical Action Team and provide technical support, as per MOU with PA
(Training: 25-29 Aug ‘09: Banke; Technical support in Sept '09)
5-days PVA training was organized to Practical Action PNGO team. Twenty-four (24) persons were trained.
Technical support was given during PVA field application by appointing PVA expert
The training was facilitated through various methodologies including lecturer, brain storming, group discussions, case studies, field practice and demonstration.
As per MOU with PA, PVA training was provided and an expert was provided to guide PVA exercises in the PA field area

Formation and functioning of REFLECT circle
(August 2009 onwards)
17 new REFLECT Centers were formed in Sunsari and Banke. There are 386 participants in these centers (average)
15 old REFLECT centers are strengthened. There are 310 participants in these centers (average)
The community level project orientation was carried in village level in presence of VDC secretary and other stakeholders
Cluster level mass meeting was organized to share about REFLECT, its importance and formation of the Reflect groups
Reflect groups are formed, provided with minimum materials such as a register, a blackboard with chalk, mats
Reflect centers are regularly conducted at least twice a week
Reflect centers are active and have been discussing in DRR and social issues. They are aware about their rights. REFLECT center lead to some of the initiatives
Stopped illegal mud cutting from river bank
Approach in VDC council for budget allocation in DRR
Approach in district to establish livestock office in local level

Formation and functioning of DMC
(Sept 2009 onwards)
10 new DMCs formed in Sunsari and Banke with 102 members (49 women).
9 old DMCs are strengthened having 95 members (60 women)
Task forces on Early warning, First Aid and Search and Rescue are formed under the leadership of DMCs
Cluster level mass meeting was organized including Reflect centers, different formal and non-formal groups
The roles and responsibilities of DMC were shared
The criteria was set up and committee members were chosen as per the criteria
DMCs regularly meet, and discuss on risk reduction
Own initiatives like preparing 200 m road, sanitation campaign
They are approaching to VDC and forest user committee fund
DMCs are operating separate bank account, and mobilizing funds
DMCs have been involved in awareness activities eg: sensitizing other people in the communities, and identified the place for mitigation

CBDRR training to DMC members
(Oct-Nov ’09:Banke & Sunsari)
4 CBDRR training for DMCs were organized in Sunsari and Banke.
137 DMC members were trained including 67 females in the training.
All the DMC members were incorporated in the training
The trainings were organized in nearest location
Resource persons from DDC/DAO were also used
Trained and informed community members in CBDRR activities taking leadership to community based DRR activities
CBDRR training to School volunteer (28-30 Nov ‘09: Inaruwa)
A CBDRR training to school volunteers organized in Sunsari
40 students & teachers (23 females) were trained.
2 Participants (One girl and one boy) were selected from each school in project areas
Trained and informed school students and teachers for disaster safety in school.
School safety plan is prepared
Emergency Relief Fund
(Jan ’10: Banke & Sunsari)
Emergency relief fund is established in all the project areas in 10 DMCs
The fund is generated locally and matching fund is also provided by the project
The meeting of cluster and DMC organized to discuss about the need and importance of the fund
DMC member opened account in nearby bank or financial institution
DMC raise money at first in the fund; then fund from project is transferred with due contract with DMC
People express their confidence in coping the future disasters
Basic First Aid Training to
2 First Aid trainings are organized in one each in
First Aid volunteers are chosen in each cluster under DMC
Volunteers are ready to provide first aid service during disasters or anytime

Project Launching - National & District Level
(August 19/Aug 9/July 19, 2009)
A National level joint launching organized. Over 80 persons including State-minister, MOHA also attended the program.
Two district level launching workshops were organized in Sunsari and Banke. Over 200 persons attended the district launching events.
The concept was discussed in DIPECHO partners meeting
Work division was done to each organization to ensure quality in project launching
Project received attention in national level and respective districts level, sought stakeholder support and opened the project framework to district stakeholders
The news was captured in national newspaper and local radio
ISDR Day Celebration
(October 10-14, 2009)
A joint ISDR day was organized. DIPECHO partners, NNDAC, AIN, govt and UN organization were in the grand meeting/rally/exhibition
The concept was discussed in DIPECHO partners meeting
Several meetings were organized among the partners
Advocacy initiatives begun with for building enabling DRR policy environment. The event achieved the objective of triggering nationwide movement to seek DRR policy

3 PNGOs celebrated ISDR day in respective districts.
EQ day celebration
Participated in 4 days EQ safety exhibition in Lalitpur
A week long program was organized in Sunsari (8 street drama and 1 orientation were to masons was organized)
Participated in a rally organized by DUDBEC
A joint stall for all DIPECHO partners was prepared
Posters, brochures, leaflets were distributed to the visitors
Prime minister and other high government officials visited in the exhibition stall
Awareness was created to the visitors in the stall about earthquake and other disaster preparedness issues
National level coordination
Over 15 DIPECHO partners coordination meeting event organized/held.
Participated on NAPA process through CiD SLD process
DIPECHO partners meeting is held in rotation wise
Closely working with Ministry of Home Affairs for CC and DRR policy framework
Regular meetings, Periodic bulletin, joint event celebration, partnership MOUs etc. developed. AAN hosted the Aug coordination meeting.

Policy Tool Kit preparation and Launching
(February 24, 2010)
DRR Policy toolkit (1000) are prepared and printed in Nepali
Tool kit was launched jointly by Vice-chairperson of Constituent Assembly; and Minister of Law
Many rounds of consultative workshops/meeting on DRR Tool kit organized
15 different I/NGOs, UN agencies, NGOs and network joined hand with Action Aid for tool kit preparation
EU Ambassador to Nepal, and UNDP Resident Representatives were present as distinguished guest
There were more than 150 participants present of which about 40 Constituent Assembly members
Platform for coordinated and collective advocacy effort established, with multi-stakeholder forums and approaches.
Vice-chair of Constituent Assembly expressed commitment and directed CA members to pass proposed DM Act
HFA Orientation
(November-December, 2009)
Four events of HFA orientations were carried out in Sunsari, for government and non-government officers. In GO workshop, 83 (12 women) government employees participated and in NGO workshop, 88 NGO leaders (20 women) participated.
All the government officers including Chief District Officer were involved in the orientation program
The NGO leaders and senior journalists in the district were identified and make participation
Government officials, political representatives and NGO leaders are more familiarized with the HFA and DRR issues; and express commitment towards DRR initiatives
DRR/DIPECHO Asia Mangers meet
A 3 days managers meet was organized by AAN represented by 10
Multi-country facilitators were used for making highly participatory events
Good practices were shared, Regional approach for DRR developed, AAI DRR

Result 4: Small scale mitigation measures with government and local support contribute to vulnerability reduction
Identification of mitigation works
Construction of elevated tube-well, retrofitted building, bio-dykes are in the process
Mitigation works were identified through PVA process
Raised tube-wells are under construction in Sunsari through the leadership of DMC

Agreement for additional mitigation support from UNDP
Direct support to the project as well as outside communities for about 10 million rupees in mitigation works
