PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE University of Wollongong Feb 2013 — conti. PhD Student (Applied Superconductivity) Since joining PhD study at the Applied Superconductivity Group of ISEM at UOW, I have been working toward the development of solid nitrogen (SN2) cooled MgB2 based persistent magnet for MRI application. I have been the only responsible student to design, optimize and test whole magnet system. In the beginning, first designed, optimized and get done commercial fabrication of SN2 cooling system to test various components of the magnet system. This includes identification of suitable vendor, organization of detailed purchase documents, placing order and coordination with the vendor till the fabrication completion and delivery at our site. This system has been installed in our laboratory and successfully cool-down to 8 K using two stage GM Cryocooler (1 W at 4.2 K on the first stage). Designed, fabricated and tested hybrid current leads using Brass and HTS sections with current rating of 200 A for above system. Designed, fabricated and tested, multi-filament MgB2 conductor based solenoid coil using wind and react method for testing SN2 cooling system. The analytically and FEA calculated central magnetic field matched very well with measured magnetic field. Most of the optimization work of the SN2 cooling system for thermal, structural and electromagnetic analysis was done by COMSOL Multiphysics, where as all drafting was done using Solidworks. Meantime, worked on the development of new fabrication process of persistent joining for MgB2 conductors. The success of the developed persistent joining technique was confirmed by designing, fabricating, and testing of the closed-loop laboratory scale MgB2 coils using field-decay measurement method. This work has been published in Sup. Science and Tech. journal. Recently, successful persistent joints have been fabricated with C-doped MgB2 wire and powder. In addition, working on the electric, thermal and magnetic properties measurement of MgB2 superconducting joints, MgB2 bulk, wires and tapes using 15 T re- condensing transport Jc measurement system and often PPMS. Micro-structural analysis of MgB2 wires and joints is being done using XRD and SEM. Developed strong interpersonal and presentation skills. Won two UOW Pitch - 2013, 2014 and three Min thesis competition at UOW. Dipak Patel Dipak Patel 1
