Richard Cresswell 2006-2009Thoughts on a BAAfter finishing my foundation year at Warwick I only applied to BCU and Warwick for a place on the Dip He/Ba Fine art course. I

was offered a place at both and both were keen to have me for some reason.

I decided to do my first two years at Warwick for a few reasons, firstly not having been in education for quite a while and

remembering struggling when I was. I felt I may just get lost and disappear below the waves in a large institution like a university.

Secondly the unbelievably high ratio of tutors to students at Warwick meant that I was surrounded by lifeguards who could and

did support me at the drop of a hat if I felt I was close to drowning. This support would not only come from my actual tutors but

also others who I had met in foundation and in my travels around the college using other department’s facilities. The same was

true of technical support from our art technician along with those from other departments.

On the theory side we again benefited from that access to tutors as with a class size of 10/12 and an enthusiastic tutor who

would discuss topics through coffee and lunch if needed and the group could have a discussion which included everyone in the

room.

In my third year I moved on to Margaret street BCU in Birmingham and because we had had some contact with the building and

some of the staff this wasn’t such a big step to take. Everyone had little things which we all felt could have been smoother but as I

found myself part of this tight group who had parachuted in to the third year we helped each other over it quickly. I found as others

did the change of scenery and tutors an asset as it was a different staff looking at your work fresh and reading with different views

and thoughts. This along with group crits from maybe 10 other third years you hardly knew , I found very useful.

Looking back I recon I got it about right with my choice of how to get through a BA and surviving and they managed to squeeze a

good mark out of me which pleased my Mom.

Michelle Carruthers 2006-2009• Since leaving school at 18 through both work and leisure I’ve been interested in or

involved with art and design. But it wasn’t until I started a painting class as a mature student at our local village hall that my interest began to develop into something more. I thoroughly enjoyed the painting class, but became frustrated by my inability to express my thoughts on canvas and the painting teacher suggested I consider a degree at Leamington as a way of evolving my practise. Much to my surprise I was accepted and with much trepidation started in September 2006. It’s now October 2009 and I have just started my Masters in Fine Art at Birmingham City University.

• The three years have flown past. They’ve been challenging, stimulating, hard work but most of all fun. Throughout the degree I have been encouraged to explore many different mediums and ideas within my practise, the tutors being helpful, encouraging and knowledgeable. However, the biggest personal development has been the manner in which I now think about and approach art, being broader, deeper and more critically informed.

• I would encourage anyone that, like me, had a notion that art held something more for them to consider the degree. Not only have I learnt new practical and intellectual skills, but have also made many friends along the way.

David Miles 2004-2007Thoughts on the Dip He Fine Art Course at Warwickshire CollegeI am not sure that when I first started the fine art degree course at Warwickshire College that Ihad really decided what it was I wanted from it. I had a vague idea that I wanted to be a betterpainter and that it would help me achieve that goal. What I actually got from the course was somuch more. Not only did I learn about art history and theory but I also began to see how criticalthese subjects were to my art practice. I became fascinated by these subjects with the result thaton graduation I was invited back to College to teach them.

Also about half way through the course I began to see that with hard work there was the very real possibility that I could go on to be a practicing professional artist. Soon after graduating I sold a painting I had made in my second year for nearly £2,000 at a London Art Fair. I have gone on to sell further work and won various open art competitions.

I know that I would never have been able to take my art practice to a professional level without doing the degree course. I would also never have had the incentive and guidance to embark on such a rewarding study of the theoretical aspects of art. The most important decision I made was to start the degree course at Warwickshire College where not only is the quality of the tutors excellent but the ratio of tutors to students is high. This meant I received so much help in the form of support, encouragement and critical appraisal that my work could not fail to improve.

Tim Robottom• My time at Warwickshire college started with the Foundation in Art and

Design course, which was not only stimulating, but whet my appetite for further , more intensive study. The Diploma of Higher Education in fine art was the perfect choice for me, as this slight shift allowed me to continue to develop my practice at a suitable pace.

• I found the course tutors, to be extremely knowledgeable and supportive, encouraging a questioning philosophy on many levels; aphilosophy that I feel is central to a successful art practice. The theory modules, were intensive and thorough, providing a deep understanding of the history of art, particularly that ofwestern art in the 20th century.

• I considered the facilities on this course to be exemplary, including the spaces allocated to each student, the workshop technician, was always available and more than willing to help. I can recommend this course to anyone looking to progress to the final year of B.A. honours, or those looking to develop their professional practice in a friendly and welcoming environment.

Fran BoothFran is currently studying Part time she is in year 4 of her studies.

Studying part- time is a mixed blessing. Starting anything different and new is fraught with uncertainty and doubt, and I was challenged by ideology and by the need for skills which did not come easy. Being part -time has given me time to adjust, to learn, to grow, albeit slowly and painfully at times. The realisation that this journey is lifelong, and that there is no need to hurry through the Art School experience, has enabled me to enjoy the process with the luxury of time to reflect as well as improve my craft. But being part-time carries frustrations also: friends made have moved on, deadlines are meaningless, the intensity is less and “other life” is still consuming. For these reasons I hope to complete my final year in Birmingham full-time and thanks to the slow thorough preparation I feel I will be ready to do this.

The Warwickshire College ethos and DipHE staff have enabled this to happen. They have accommodated my need to take a break from the course in order to go and learn more about the craft of my chosen medium, painting. They have enabled me to keep “other life” going by being flexible about studio times. They have been supportive of my frustrations and difficulties and have given me a well- tuned balance of guidance and intervention and space to experiment. It’s a friendly place. I recommend it. 22.11.09
