D IOCESE OF J INJA The Newsletter
Editorial
T he month of October has been a month full of activities
if one would look at just the bishop’s schedule alone.
This for sure is how some Christians of the diocese
have been since the bishop has mainly been with his
Christians. And some of these have been the students’ day,
schools like Budini S.S. and the different schools in Iganga
parish for confirmation, and others commissioning of candidates around the
diocese of Jinja. We pray for and wish the candidates of P7 like St Patrick
Kigulu and senior 6 success and good health as they do their exams in
November. May The almighty God bless October with excellent outcomes for
the S4s and the same to the P7 and S6 in November too.
Elsewhere, there have been woes for those whose loved ones have gone to
meet the Lord. May their souls rest in eternal peace. But month of November
2018 opens with good news of all saints day, a day of obligation, as well as
all souls day on 2nd. Our day of prayer for the suffering church. May the joy
of the Lord be experienced in the pilgrim and suffering churches.
Some reflection: One of the challenges on pilgrimage days is the blessing of
religious articles ranging from: Rosaries, water, crucifixes, pictures of Saints
to a whole range of articles of devotion. If we are to keep the rubrics to a
better taste, as we are taught in the good articles of this newsletter, the
celebrants have to assist the congregation and bless for them their articles.
Otherwise, approaching the different priests and deacons who are present at
the different places like the family Day, like this year come 25th November
2018, will remain the norm of every function.
Important happenings in the diocese of Jinja: New Namirali parish
boy’s-quarter construction started October 2018, Cross construction at
Namirali, Inauguration of the New Shrine at Kyebando as launched with
a collection on pilgrimage day.

THE MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS IN PURGATORY
As the weather grows colder and the leaves fall, and Thanksgiving and
Christmas approach, it is natural that our thoughts turn to those whom we
have loved who are no longer with us. How appropriate, then, that the
Catholic Church offers us November, which begins with All Saints Day
and All Souls Day, as the Month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory—those
who have died in grace, yet who failed in this life to make satisfaction for
all of their sins.
We should pray for the dead throughout the year, especially on the
anniversary of their death, but in this Month of the Holy Souls, we should
devote some time every day to prayer for the dead. We should start with
those closest to us—our mother and father, for instance—but we should
also offer prayers for all the souls, and especially for those most forsaken.

ST MATIA MULUMBA DAY KYEBANDO PILGRIMAGE 2018
Christians from around the diocese and beyond started arriving at
Kyebando parish HQ to attend the St Matia Mulumba pilgrimage day
at the birth place of the saint in Imanhiro.
This year, thousands flocked for pilgrimage from different faiths
including Muslims, and persons from different denominations, people
of all walks of life flocked for prayers and others for business in case
of those who took advantage of the mammoth crowd for market of
their goods.
Iganga Deanery was in charge of preparations. Iganga was for
pro-culture and offertory, Buluba for the decorations, Busowa and
Buluguyi on feeding the priests and religious, Kyebando on the
security, public address system and clearance of the place and Buswale
on the Tents with the support of the Uganda tourism board and
Busoga development agency, thanks.
On the occasion, the bishop of Jinja, Rt. Rev. Charles Martin Wamika
resounded the efforts being done about the new Namirali Parish and
presented some of the possible activities and features that were to be
done on the ground: for instance; the Cross that would be
corresponding to the statue of Our Mother Mary and below would be
the fourteen stations of the cross under-looking the big cross as a
possible reflection center at Namirali and overlooking the home of
Matia Bateganya. The construction is already in the hands of the
Engineers and in progression.
A launch of the construction the new Shrine extension building that
would cost a good a pretty good sum and to be footed by the Christians
of the diocese and anyone who would volunteer to assist the progress
of the catholic faith in this arrangement. The estimates were made by
Engineers courtesy of the Parish priest of Kyebando parish.
Despite of the wet ground, the pilgrimage went on as smooth as God
wanted that day and by 12 pm the liturgical function was complete.

LITURGY CORNER
MUSIC COMPOSITION/ NEW SONGS
TO BE USED IN LITURGY
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal No. 393 says the
following about Liturgical Music: "Bearing in mind the important
place that singing has in a celebration as a necessary or integral
part of the Liturgy, all musical settings of the texts for the people's
responses and acclamations in the Order of Mass and for special rites
that occur in the course of the liturgical year must be submitted to
the Conference of the Bishops or local Ordinary for review and
approval prior to publication."
Canon 838# 1: Supervision of sacred Liturgy depends solely on the
authority of the church (Apostolic see#1&2, Conference of the
bishops#3 and Diocesan Bishop- #1&4)
Hymns, songs, and acclamations written for the liturgical assembly
are approved for use in the Liturgy by the bishop of the diocese
wherein they are published, in order to ensure that these texts truly
express the faith of the Church with theological accuracy and are
appropriate to the liturgical context.
Composers who set liturgical texts to musical settings must respect
the integrity of the approved text.
Any composer of a liturgical hymn in our Diocese has to observe the
following steps before the hymn is approved by the competent
authority (Bishop) for use in any liturgical function:
The composer must submit the hymn to the Music sub-commission for
perusal and recommendation.
The Music sub-commission must submit that Hymn to the Diocesan
Liturgical Commission for review and recommendation.
The Diocesan Liturgical Commission must submit the same Hymn to
the Ordinary of the Diocese for review and approval to be used in any
liturgical function in the Diocese and elsewhere.
It is wrong and forbidden for any composer to start using any hymn in
any liturgical activity before it is approved and permitted to be used in
any liturgical function by the ordinary of the Diocese.
Choir Conductors should note the following while animating the
singing liturgy:

By Fr. John Baptist Kaddu Mukwaya
The main actor during Holy Mass is the Main Celebrant (MC) and
therefore the choir conductor should monitor the MC closely while
animating Liturgy.
There are songs which constitute an independent rite and therefore
cannot be skipped or substituted by another song, (Gloria,
Responsorial psalm, Alleluia, Sanctus, memorial acclamation, and post
communion hymn. cfr LG51, GIRM 31
There are Hymns which accompany other rites and should serve only
that purpose (Agnus Dei (breaking of the bread), Entrance song
(accompanying Ministers to the altar), Communion song (communion),
offertory song (offertory) cfr. GIRM no. 47 (LG-Liturgical Guidelines
and GIRM- General instruction to the Roman Missal)
JINJA DIOCESAN COUNCIL FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY
The Jinja Diocesan Council of Persons with Disability
cordially invite the entire diocese of Jinja to celebrate with
them the 2nd Diocesan Persons-with-Disability (PWDs) day
scheduled for 10th November 2018 at Walukuba Parish Jinja.
On this day, the PWDs, their parents, care takers and Christians
from all over the Diocese gather at a designated place
(Walukuba Parish) to pray together, to share experiences and
testimonies, encourage each other, entertainment and share a
meal.
One of the aims is: continued awareness that PWDs are God’s
Children also. This would help change negative attitudes
towards humanity, to be accepted, loved, respected and allowed
to participate in the church activities and other social affairs
that befit them.
The function will begin at 10:30 am with Mass presided over
by His Lordship Rt. Rev. Charles Martin, the Bishop of the
Catholic Diocese of Jinja.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Jesus said: I am the resurrection. Anyone who
believes in me, even though that person dies,
will live: John 11:25
What is worse: the recognizable demon that pushes you to sin
so that you feel ashamed, or the well-mannered demon that
lives within you and possess you with the spirit of worldliness?
