Dewatering dredged material:
Tubes are used where a containment area or spoil area is not possible or practical.
Even when a containment area is a viable option, tubes can be used to construct it. There are
several advantages to this method.
• A much smaller space is required.
• The dredged material is used to construct the dike.
• There are no erosion or blow out worries.
• The decant water is cleaner because no dirt from the dike washes into the spoil area.
• No heavy equipment is needed to build the dikes.
• No excavation, or dirt hauled in, and back out again.
• When there is a natural ravine the tubes can be used to construct a dam across the
opening, or a semicircle dike to a side hill, using the natural lay of the land for part of the
dike.
• The cost of these methods is usually less than excavating besides the other advantages. A
6' high dike can usually be built for $25 per linear foot
• Theoretical example:
Containment for 3,000 CY of lake mud.
• A spoil area made with a dirt bank would be 160' x 160' minimum outside measurement,
and would contain 1,327 CY minimum of dirt if it were hauled in.
• A spoil area built with 30' tubes would be 100' x 100' outside measurement, and would
contain only dredged material.
