Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On Ash Wednesday, February 18, our diocese will take up the Collection for the Church in Cen-tral and Eastern Europe. The collection offers a way for Catholics in the United States to stand in solidarity with those who experience the ongoing effects of living under difficult circumstances across the globe.

Grants funded by this collection support pastoral projects, scholarships, and Catholic organizations working in areas formerly under Soviet control. The bishops and people of these regions still face enormous challenges in restoring church structures and in rebuilding the cultural and spiritual life of the community, tasks that are often complicated by a lack of religious freedom.

One funded group, a Czech association for women and children and the protection of unborn life (Obcanske sdruzeni ONZ—pomoc a poradenstvi pro zeny a divky), has worked for 23 years to re-duce the rate of abortions in the Czech Republic. When the association opened its doors in 1990 af-ter the Velvet Revolution, half of all pregnancies in the country ended in abortion. Through innova-tive counseling and support programs at six regional centers for women in difficult situations, the as-sociation has played a major role in reducing the abortion rate from 50 percent down to 20 per-cent. The centers work to protect the human dignity of both mothers and children, advocating for the right to life of the unborn. Recently, the association experienced a crisis when the Czech government withdrew operational support for its programs. The Subcommittee on the Church in Central and Eastern Europe provided a critical bridge grant that allowed the association to continue its operations while searching for a permanent funding solution. In 2014, the Czech Bishops’ Conference announced that it would fund the association's operating expenses from its own budget, thereby guaranteeing the future of the as-sociation and its crucial work. In order for projects like this one to continue, the collection needs your help. Please be generous. Your donation will continue to restore and build the future of the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Thank you and God bless you. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon, Bishop of Joliet

LENTEN REGULATIONS

1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Church year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regula-tions), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.

All calls are confidential with callbacks within 24 hours.

In the Gospel, we read that Jesus was “moved with pity”, and so he chose to heal the leper. The leper publicized his cleansing and spread word of Jesus’ good acts. So much so, that it

was impossible for Him to enter the town. Still people kept coming to him from everywhere. May we spread the good news of Jesus and have the grace to put our faith into action.

If you or someone you know, need assistance please call our helpline. All calls are confidential with callbacks within 24 hours.

CPR / AED TRAINING (An AHA HS CPR/AED Provider Course)

The next training session for learning adult/child CPR/AED is being offered on Monday, March 23, 2015. The session will run from 6:00 - 10:00 pm in room 110. Ken Searcy, RN, a St. Andrew parishioner, will be the trainer for this session. If anyone is interested, please contact the office at 815-886-4165, ext. 301 to reserve a space. There is no cost for this nonhealthcare provider class.

Attention Singers!

Do you like to sing, but cannot make the commit-ment to a regular schedule of rehearsals and litur-gies? If so, consider being

part of our Resurrection Choir. This group sings at funerals Masses held at St. Andrew. Funerals are normally held at 10:00 AM Monday-Saturday. There are no rehearsals and you are not committed to attend every funeral. The music is mostly from the Gather Hymnals from which we sing for Mass.

This is a wonderful way to support those who are grieving the loss of a loved one, and to pray with them and for them. If you are interested in this ministry or have more questions, call Sue at 815-886-4165 ext. 314.

Sounds of Sacred Music with guest children’s choir

On Saturday, February 21, 2015, St. Andrew the Apostle will welcome members of the Cathedral Children’s Choir to sing at the 4:00pm and 5:30pm Masses. This choir brings together chil-dren from all over the Diocese of Joliet to joy-fully praise God through sacred music. Members of the CCC are excitedly preparing to represent our Diocese in December 2015 at an International Youth Choral Festival with Pope Francis in the Vatican, and they are touring par-ishes around the Diocese in preparation for their momentous pilgrimage. Your prayers and generous support are needed to send our young singers to Rome! To learn more or to contribute online, visit www.cathedralchildrenschoir.org or call 815.325.7361.

RETURN TO GOD

On the hallway wall at the church entrance and at the East entrance in the Parish Hall is a large brown cross. On that cross beginning on Ash Wednesday and all through Lent, you will find smaller purple crosses with items that our dedicated parish staff wish for. During this time of Prayer, Penance, and Alms-giving, can you find it in your heart to “take up your cross”, a purple cross, put your name and phone number on the back, and drop it in the basket or re-turn it to a staff member or the Parish Office. We will contact you about your donation. Thank you for your kindness.

GRANT ETERNAL REST, LIGHT AND PEACE TO ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED, especially Arnold Gresser.

Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 for the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital ministry team or homebound and in need of communion.

Hospital Visitation of Parishioners

Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us, too, at the office, ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!

A COMMUNITY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT

SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION

CATECHUMENATE The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.

SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT MARRIAGE Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.

ORDERS Those seeking assistance in discerning a call to ordained ministry are encouraged to call the parish offices.

SACRAMENTS OF HEALING RECONCILIATION Reconciliation is available each Saturday afternoon, Wednesday evening 5:30-7:00pm, through seasonal communal services, and by appointment.

ANOINTING Anointing of the Sick is offered through seasonal services, and always by request. If hospitalized, please immediately seek anointing from the Catholic chaplain.
