Watermark UniversityMost of us think of ghost towns as western mining camps that were
abandoned when the gold or silver ran out. But many early
settlements in the heart of America suffered similar fates when
progress passed them by. In fact, ghost towns can be found
throughout our country, and many are located right here in the
Midwest. Join Travis Northrup for this fascinating class where you
will learn the story of local ghost towns, including the locations
and histories of selected towns, and what caused each to become a
ghost town. Ghost Towns of the Midwest meets on the 4th Tuesday
of each month this fall at 3:00 p.m. in the Town Center Den.

Dining,Italian OperaStyleThe arrival of fall brings with
it a new theme for our dining
services group. This year's
theme is titled Encore. Each
month you can look forward
to art-inspired cuisine, along
with outings and programs to
add an artistic flair to the
atmosphere at The Fountains. Join us for an Italian Opera themed
meal, viewings of famous operas within the community and a Met
Live broadcast at Kalamazoo 10 cinema. You'll also have plenty of
opportunity to get out and about in Kalamazoo for symphony and
theatre events, as well as fall rides to apple orchards and pumpkin
farms to take in the beautiful fall scenery and enjoy the harvest.
And wait until you see the programs being offered through
Watermark University and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute!
Everything from craft beer tastings to programs on ghost towns and
Jack the Ripper! And don't miss our annual Halloween parties!
Path to Well-BeingThis October, Watermark Retirement
Communities is proud to participate in
National Breast Cancer Awareness
Month.
Breast cancer is the second most
common kind of cancer in women. About
1 in 8 women born today in the United
States will get breast cancer at some
point.
The good news is that many women can
survive breast cancer if it’s found and
treated early.
Talk to a doctor about your risk for
breast cancer, especially if a close family
member of yours has had breast or
ovarian cancer. Your doctor can help you
decide when and how often to get
mammograms.

ThrivingMichigan is quickly becoming one of the nation's largest brewing hubs, and
Kalamazoo's Bell's Brewery tops the list when it comes to popularity. Last
month a group of Town Center residents paid a visit to the newest
operational plant for Michigan's largest brewing company (in nearby
Comstock), to learn a little about the history of the company and the
process by which beer brewing occurs. While touring the plant we were
fascinated to discover the methods by which beer is flavored and brewed,
and enjoyed some delicious samples as well! We undoubtedly gained a
heightened appreciation for the brewing industry. The only area we were
unable to see on this particular Sunday was the bottling plant, a few doors
down on the same campus. Perhaps a follow-up visit is in order!
