STOP PRESS!

Just room to squeeze in an artist’s impression of the new Clubhouse balcony!

A message from Robin our Commodore The first Committee Meeting of the New Year took place on 19th January, and business was brisk with lots of enthusiasm to tackle the challenges of the new season. The minutes may be seen in the Members Area. The new programme was already in draft form and probably finalised by now and will appear soon on our Web Site. Consideration has been given to the comments and wishes of the membership following the Passage Plan. Members who have read the minutes will have noticed that our next capital project, the veranda extension, is also being developed. This was also a scheme resulting from the Passage Plan and proved to be enormously popular with the support of the majority of the membership. Maurice Brown has kindly agreed to be Project Manager and is in the process of applying for planning permission. Detailed drawings and cost schedules have been prepared to extend the veranda to 4 metres wide to the West and South with a modification to a West window to provide folding door access. This will greatly enhance our social facility and provide secure storage for the Club`s fleet of 10 Toppers under the deck, plus some members boats. When all preparations are complete, I will call an EGM to present the finalised project to the membership. I am determined that if at all possible, we should go ahead this season. It will require some form of loan funding but this has never stopped us in the past. There could be no finer place to observe a sunset, with a bottle of wine, and with good friends, after a glorious days sailing. New Season - New Boats - Competition As you all know, our new Safety Boat is to be named “ Patricia “ in loving memory of dear Trish Silsbury. Our 2 brand spanking new Fevas however do not as yet have names. I invite our Junior Members to compete in suggesting names for them. There will be prizes for the winning names, plus the 2 winners will sail the boats for the first time, weather permitting at the naming ceremony to be held on Tuesday 5th June ... part of the Jubilee holiday weekend celebrations' Entries to Luke Cousins by 29th February 2012. As I write these few lines the new season seems somewhat distant with a fair covering of snow transforming our little hamlet into a Christmas Card scene, even our garden looks pretty good! But No! Our Shakedown events are only about 9 weeks away, and could that be a Daffodil forcing its way through 3 feet of snow ? Dream on! Happy new season to you all. Robin

Wednesday 17th Aug 2011

We left Walton Backwaters at 04.00 heading for the Medusa then Sunk Head Towers, Black Deep, and past London Array wind farm. Wind was NW3 and we were motor sailing. We skirted the Fisherman’s Gat and East Margate then reaching the North Foreland, looking dramatic in the morning light. We circled inside Broadstairs

harbour and then went past Ramsgate into Pegwell Bay, at 12.00. We sailed over everything into the entrance of Stour which is by a big old power station. There were lots of seals on bank just inside. We continued past Richborough Port which was used to send troops to France in the first World War, and anchored above Stonar Gap for

lunch. We managed to sail all the way to Sandwich which was a good 4 miles up the beautiful wide and meandering river. It was high slack water by the time we arrived and sailed alongside pristine Dutch yacht. We had a walk round the lovely historic town, which had been an important port in medieval times and a Cinque Port. Hard

to believe now the entrance has silted up. There were plenty of pubs to choose from for our drink and meal. The day had been well above our expectations and Des kept saying “I never thought it would be like this!” Thursday 18th Aug 2011

We explored the town properly which was full of ancient Tudor buildings and visited the ancient law court and church, then bought provisions from the market. We left at 13.00 as soon as tide flowed up (we had already lowered mast). The countryside was beautiful and the weather was still sunny, although very windy. There were lots of big boats moored right up in this part of the river but none were moving! The river doubles back to pass the power station again but from the other side. Pluck’s Gutter, where we had planned to get to, was not much of a place so we continued upstream. We went past Grove Ferry, and then the river opened out suddenly into some big wide broads just like Norfolk. We thought we would see how far we could get and continued past a weed catcher but soon found our prop was completely fouled with very tough weed, which we could not get off easily. We had to row the boat

backwards (the best way it would go) to the weed catcher where I lay down with the bread knife (my arms are longer) to cut all the weed off which took ages!

Page 8: Dinghy Park Tidy · Dinghy Park Tidy Sunday 4 th March at 10am Visit Aldeburgh Life Boat station Wednesday 21 st March at 7pm OOD Refresher and Chilli Lunch ... Refer to Poster

We had actually got within about 3 miles of Canterbury. We got back to Grove ferry 18.00 and tied up right outside the pub, where we had a well earned drink and meal.

Friday 19th Aug 2011 Left 07.30 to take flow back to Sandwich which was strong by the time we got there so went under the bridge backwards, and back alongside the “Edam” which was still there. We repaired

the running lights then took the stream down at 10.30 and had enough water even at low tide to get all the way down to the entrance, the flood was against us by this time. The last part of the river goes through an absolutely vast drug factory complex! We anchored by the seals and they entertained us for ages as the light faded. In the night they were swimming all round us and splashing about! Our plan had be to go to France and the forecast had looked good but when we woke up at 04.00 it had all changed. The

wind was now fair to go home so we thought we better take the chance before we got stuck, but the trip was well worth it in its own right!

Want to know more about this voyage then I am sure June Bird would be only to pleased to share her experience of this trip.
