WHEEL OF WELLNESS

CONTINUUM

All seven spokes are essential to the strength and balance of the wheel demonstrating a continuum, from illness to wellness, along the line of each spoke from the centre to the edge. Within this continuum the “treatment model” is seen as only being applied to the measures and signs of illness , whereas the “wellness model” gives support across the whole continuum

YOU THE FOCUS

• In each dimension there is opportunity for personal growth, and due to the dimensions’ interrelationships, growth in one area often sparks interest in another.

• Balancing these dimensions, however, is important in pursuing wellness. For example, being an avid reader yet not being able to get along with anyone is not an example of balanced wellness

EAST AND WEST

The reductionist West have focused on behavior change as the mechanism for achieving wellness and left largely unconsidered the Eastern approach of transformation of consciousness

The Wellness dimensions drawn from this model includes constructs of gender and cultural identity, both of which interact with other constructs, emphasizing the construction of wellness has much to do with its location within the context of culture, gender and class.

EASTERN WELLNESS

• According to Ayurveda life is much beyond a biochemical or biophysical phenomenon. It is the manifestation of union of soul, mind and body which are integral and interdependent components of life.

• Action and Chetana (closest equivalent is consciousness) are the essential characteristics of life. Soul provides Chetana (consciousness) while mind initiates action and these characteristics manifest in body which neither possesses Chetana nor an action

ORIGIN OF UNIVERSE - COSMOLOGY• Avyakta (latent)

Avyakta means unmanifested. The avyakta principle is the unmanifested form of pure existence. The origin of Universe is from avyakta. There are 2 main components.

• Purusha

• Prakruti

ORIGIN OF UNIVERSE - COSMOLOGY• As per the principles of Ayurveda, every human being is a

microcosm of the universe, that is, a universe within the universe. Everything in this universe is connected. Ayurveda advocates that the relationship and interaction between the energy and matter, individual and consciousness determine the health of the person.

ORIGIN OF UNIVERSE - COSMOLOGY• In the beginning, there was primordial stillness.  The desire of

that stillness to know itself created a disturbance, which took form as the intention and motivation of cosmic energy.  This disturbance, in turn, created a duality in cosmic consciousness

PURUSHA

•  Purusha is absolute, pure conciousness. It is a potential energy. Purusha does not take an active part in the creation. Purusha is the observer. It is only a witness to the creation. It exists as a choiceless, colorless, formless non-material entity.

MAHAD (COSMIC INTELLIGENCE)•  This is the first primordial matter developed from Prakruti and

Purusha. Mahad is defined as  pure innate intelligence. It has self awareness but no differentiation. Mahad is Buddhi as reasoning capacity and individual intellect.

• collective consciousness

• Buddhi, or wisdom and discriminatory power

CREATION OF UNIVERSE

•  The creation of the universe, as described in the Rig Veda, emerged out of Avyakta (Unmanifest) in which everything lay latent. This universe emanates from and recedes into Paramatma in an everlasting process. Creation is described as the union of Purusha (life principle or spiritual factor) and Prakriti (nature or cosmic illusion). Omit one or the other, and there is no creation.

PANCHAMAHA BHUTAS (5 GREAT ELEMENTS

• Everything in the universe is made up of combinations of the Five Elements (Pancha Mahabhutas). This includes the human being which also acquires a soul or spirit. These five elements are known as:

• Space or Akasha

• Air or Vayu

• Fire or Tejas

• Water or Apa

• Earth or Prithvi

Page 38: DIMENSION OF WELLNESS.ppt

CREATION

• These five elements, it should be understood, derive from and are expressions of an unmanifest and undifferentiated Creative Principle, which is One. These five elements are to be understood in a material sense as well as a subtle sense. By earth we are to understand not only the terrain of our planet or the iron in our red blood cells and spleen, but also the quality of steadfastness of mind, strength of one’s moral fiber, one’s slow and quiet undeterred advancement towards a goal, and the resistance to the manifestations of others.
