Safety Inst ruct ionsUse the following safety guidelines to protect yourself and your computer.For comfort and efficiency, observe the ergonomic guidelines provided inthe Tell Me How help file.
When Using Your Computer
CAUTION: Do not operate your computer with any cover(s)(incl uding t he comput er cover, f il ler brackets, f ront -panel insert s,and so on) removed.
• To help avoid damaging your computer, be sure that the voltageselection switch is set to match the AC power available at yourlocation:
– 115 V/60 Hz in most of North and South America and some FarEastern count ries such as Sout h Korea and Taiwan
– 100 V/50 Hz in eastern Japan and 100 V/60 Hz in western Japan– 230 V/50 Hz in most of Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East
Also be sure that your monitor and attached devices are electricallyrated to operate with the AC power available in your location.
• To help avoid possible damage to t he system board, wait 5 secondsafter tu rning off the comput er before disconnect ing or connect ing anon-USB device from the computer.
• To help prevent electric shock, plug the computer and device powercables into properly grounded power sources. These cables areequipped with 3-prong plugs to help ensure proper grounding. Do notuse adapt er plugs or remove the grounding prong from a cable. If youmust use an extension cable, use a 3-wire cable with properly groundedplugs.

o m • To help protect your comput er from sudden, t ransient increases and
decreases in electrical power, use a surge suppressor, line conditioner,or unin terrupt ible power supply.
• Be sure that noth ing rests on your computer’s cables and t hat thecables are not located where they can be stepped on or tripped over.
• Do not spill food or liquids on your computer. If the computer getswet, cont act D ell (see page 82 ).
• Do not push any objects into the openings of your computer. Doing so
can cause fire or electric shock by shorting out interior components.• Keep your comput er away from radiators and h eat sources. Also, do not
block cooling vents. Avoid placing loose papers underneat h yourcomputer; do not place your computer in a closed-in wall unit or on abed, sofa, or rug.
When Working I nside Your Computer
Before you remove the comput er cover, perform the following steps in t hesequence indicated.
NOTI CE: Do not attempt to service the computer yourself, except asexplained in this guide and elsewhere in Dell documentation. Always followinstallation and service instructions closely.
1 Turn off your comput er and all devices.
2 Ground yourself by touching an unpainted m etal surface at t he back of the comput er before t ouching anyth ing inside your computer.
While you work, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface on thecomputer to dissipate any stat ic electricity that might harm internalcomponents.
3 Disconnect any devices connected t o the comput er, including th emonitor, from t heir electrical out lets to reduce the potent ial for
personal injury or shock. Also, disconnect any telephone ortelecommunication lines from t he computer.
4 Disconnect the power cable to your comput er, and t hen press thepower butt on to ground t he system board.

In addition, take note of these safety guidelines when appropriate:
• W hen you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector, not on the cableitself. As you pull connect ors apart, keep t hem evenly aligned to avoidbending any pins. Also, before you connect a cable, make sure thatboth connectors are correctly oriented and aligned.
• Handle component s and cards with care. Don’t touch the componentson a card. Hold a card by its edges or by its metal bracket.
CAUTION: There is a danger of a new batt ery exploding if it is
incorr ect ly i nst alled. Replace t he bat t ery only wit h t he same orequivalent type recommended by the manufacturer. Discard usedbatteries according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Protecting Against Electrostatic Discharge
To prevent stat ic damage, discharge static elect ricity from your body beforeyou t ouch anything inside your computer and periodically while you work
inside the computer. You can do so by touching an unpainted metal surfaceon the back of the computer.
You can also take t he following steps t o prevent stat ic damage:
• Do not remove items from t heir antistat ic packing material unt il youare ready to install them in your computer. Just before unwrapping theant istat ic packaging, be sure to d ischarge stat ic electricity from yourbody.
• W hen t ransporting a sensitive component , first p lace it in an ant istat iccontainer or packaging.

Accessing the InternetTo access the Int ernet after completing the Dellnet registrat ion process,double-click the Int ernet E xplorer icon on your Windows desktop. InternetExplorer automatically initiates the Internet connect ion through Dellnet .
Accessing Your E-MailTo access your Dellnet e-mail, double-click the Outlook Express icon onyour W indows desktop. C lick Send/Receive to download your messagesfrom the m ail server. W hen you download your messages, they are stored onyour hard drive un til you delete them.
Viewing Your Account Information
HINT: Dellnet allows youto use case-sensitivepasswords. Be sure that< CapsLock> is notturned on.
If you did not record your Dellnet user name or password, access theDellnet Administration tool to verify or change this information:
1 Click the Start button, point to Programs —> Dellnet , and then click Dellnet Administration .
2 Click Next twice.
3 Click Connect to connect to Dellnet.
4 W hen the Dellnet Self-Administration page appears, click View My Account Information .
5 Click Next .
6 Type your Challenge Question answer.
7 Click Next .
Your account information appears on the screen.
8 Click Print to print the informat ion or click Main Menu to go to themain menu.

Sending and Receiving E-Mail• Double-click the Outlook Express icon to initiate a connection to the
Internet t hrough D ellnet.
• Always check the address of each recipient when sending e-mail.Otherwise, your e-mail is returned to you.
• Be sure that the person who is sending e-mail to you is typing youre-mail address correctly.
• Do not send e-mail messages larger than 2 MB.
• If you are having difficulties sending e-mail, determine whether theproblem involves just one recipient or all recipients. Then contact theDellnet t echnical support staff (see page 82 ).
Reset t ing E-Mail Address Set t ings
If your e-mail software gets corrupted, reset your account :
1 Click the Start button, point to Programs —> Dellnet , and th en click Dellnet Administration .
2 Click Next twice.
3 Click Connect to connect to Dellnet.
4 W hen the Dellnet Self-Administration page appears, click Make MyChanges Take Effect .
5 Click Next .
6 Enter your Challenge Phrase answer.
7 Click Next .
8 Click the Click To Make Changes Take Effect button.
9 Click OK.
Connecting a PrinterSee the documentation that came with the printer for any recommendedpreparation procedures, such as:
• Removing the packaging
• Installing the toner or ink cartridge
• Loading paper

Parallel Print er
1 Turn off the comput er (see page 16 ).
NOTI CE: Use only a standard IEEE parallel cable measuring 3 m (10 ft) orless to connect the printer to the computer. Use of a nonstandard cable mayprevent the printer from working.
2 Att ach th e parallel printer cable to t he parallel connector on thecomputer and t ighten the t wo screws. Att ach the cable to the parallelconnector on the printer and snap the two clips into the two notches.
3 Turn on the printer and then turn on the computer. If the Add NewHardware Wizard window appears, click Cancel .
4 Install the printer driver if necessary (see page 15 ).

USB Printer
HINT: You can connectUSB devices while thecomputer is turned on.
1 Install the printer driver if necessary (see page 15 ).2 Att ach the USB printer cable to the USB connector on the comput er
and t he printer. The USB connectors only fit one way.
Inst all ing the Printer Driver HINT: Dell installsdrivers for some newprinters. Click the Start button, point to Settings ,and then click Printers . I fyour printer is listed in thePrinters window, the
printer is ready to use.
If you need to install a printer driver, insert the installation C D into t he C Dor DVD drive. Then follow the prompt s on the screen using the instructionsthat came with the printer.
If your printer installation CD does not au tomat ically run, click the Start but ton on the Windows desktop, click Run , and type x :\setup.exe (where x is the letter of your CD or DVD drive [usually drive D]). Thenclick OK and follow the prompts on your screen.
If you connect an older printer and it doesn’t work after you install thedriver, access the system setup program (see page 78 ) and ensure that t heparallel port is set to operate in bidirectional mode.

1 Save and exit an y programs and files you have open.
2 Click the Start butt on, and then click Shut D own .
3 In the Shut D own Windows window, click Shut down and then click OK.
The computer automatically tu rns off after the shutdown processfinishes.
4 Turn off your monitor and any other devices connected to power.
Windows 2000
1 Save and exit an y programs and files you have open.

C ONNECT THE COMPUTER DIRECTLY TO AN ELECTRI CAL OUTLET —
Bypass power protection devices, power strips, and the extension cable to verifythat the computer turns on.
S WA P TH E COMPUTER A ND MONI TOR POWER CABLES — Swap th ecomput er and monitor power cables to determine if the power cable is defective.
C HECK FOR I NTERFERENCE — Electrical appliances on the same circuit or
operating near the computer can cause interference. Oth er causes of interference: power extension cables, keyboard and mouse extension cables, toomany devices on a power strip, or multiple power strips connected to the sameelectrical outlet .

Clearing Forgot t en PasswordsIf you forget your user or setup password, you cannot operate your comput eror change settings in the system setup program until you clear the forgottenpassword(s).
NOTI CE: The following procedure resets all standard settings for yourcomputer. Before proceeding, record or print (by pressing < Print Screen> ) allcurrent settings so that you can restore them when you finish this procedure.
1 Remove the computer cover (see page 42 ).
2 Locate jumper BIOS CONF on t he system board (see page 44 ) andmove the jumper plug so that p ins 2 and 3 are jumpered.
3 Replace the computer cover (see page 71 ), plug your comput er into anelectrical outlet , and turn on the computer.
4 Press < Enter> at the Maintenance screen and then click Yes to clear
all passwords.
5 Press < F10> to save your changes and exit t he system setup program.
6 Remove the computer cover again.
7 Move the jumper plug so that p ins 1 and 2 are jumpered (standardsetting).
8 Replace the computer cover, plug your computer into an electricaloutlet, and tu rn on the computer.
Replacing the Bat t ery
A coin-cell batt ery maintains computer configuration, dat e, and timeinformation. The battery can last several years.
If you have to repeatedly reset t ime and date informat ion after turning onthe comput er, replace the bat tery.

• Class A is typically for business or industrial environment s.
