Diigo
A cloud-based information management tool that enables users to collect, highlight, access and share
a variety of information, on a variety of devices.
How do you manage the valuable urls that you discover on the Internet?
How helpful it would be to see what others have deemed useful rather than searching tirelessly.
Would you like to be able to highlight text on web pages to share with others or keep privately for when you return to the site?
Would you find it useful to keep notes on a page?
Imagine if you could easily bookmark, recall and share valuable websites and passages of text by personalised tags?
Consider…
Introduce Diigo
By the end of the session you will:
◦ Have created your own account
◦ Bookmarked at least two valuable websites
◦ Joined the EDUC9701 Diigo group and possible other groups to expand your professional network.
◦ Bookmarked highlighted text and sticky notes for your private use or to share with others in a group or publically.
Objectives
Introducing Diigo
http://www.vimeo.com/12687333
Diigo is suitable for all users of the internet.
It is especially valuable for directing primary school students (years 3+) to specific websites and keeping groups of students up to date with new resources as they emerge.
It is suitable for all areas of learning.
Diigo is free and there is an Education option without advertisments.
There is a premium version being developed.

To enjoy the full benefits of Diigo it is highly recommended that you install the toolbar (ie. a browser add-on extension).
The toolbar installs in seconds, has no adware or spamware and is fully customisable to save desktop space. It is available for Firefox, Internet Explorer, Flock 0.9, Chrome and other browsers.
The Diigo toolbar allows you to:
* Bookmark * Highlight * Use Sticky notes * Read-later * Take Snapshots * Use a quick access filter * Customise the way you use it
The Toolbar
Diigo toolbar does not work with Safari but you can Post to Diigo or use Diigolet.
If you don't like or cannot install the Diigo toolbar you can use Diigolet (a bookmarklet).

Tasks
1. Highlight some text on a page and bookmark it either as a private bookmark for yourself or for our group.
2. Add a sticky note to a page and share this with our group.
Tasks (continued)
I have found few limitations in its use. The major barrier would be that the toolbar is
unable to be installed in DECS schools due to potential security risks related to the opening of a port.
Diigolet is a valuable alternative. Don’t forget to sign-out when closing the browser
so that others cannot bookmark web pages on using your account.
Diigo can only bookmark public pages not Google docs or papers from academic databases.
Challenges and/or Barriers
I believe Diigo is a tool that should be introduced to all students of from year 3 up.
This free tool transforms the way webpages are bookmarked, recalled and shared with others.
I highly recommend Diigo and can attest that it will change your life for the better!
I always look forwards to learning how Diigo has evolved and can’t wait to use it with my iphone and ipad although there will be a cost.
