Installing the Battery

Slide the battery cover in the direction of arrow.Insert an AAA (LR03 or R03) battery according to thepolarity (+, -) indications and close the battery cover.[CLOCK] is displayed on the LCD and the voicerecorder enters the clock adjustment mode (seeon page 6).If the battery cover is not closed tightly, [OPEN] isshown on the LCD and the recorder will not function.Make sure the cover is closed correctly.

Clock Adjustment

Each time you press the FOLDER/MENU button, theblinking figures change: "year", "month" and "day". Adjusteach item in the same way as "hour" and "minute".After setting the "day", press the FOLDER/MENU buttonagain to complete the clock adjustment.

BASIC OPERATIONS

The V-90 has three folders: [A], [B] and [S].Folders [A] and [B] are designed for use in normalrecording or alarm playback.

Messages can be arranged in each folderFolder [S] is designed for use in schedulemanagement (see page 16).

The Stop mode is automatically engaged if the recorderis left in the recording-pause mode for 30 minutes or theSTOP button is pressed during recording-pause mode.Press the REC button again to resume recording.Using the recording-pause mode allows you to continuerecording in the same message.

Playback-Pause (PAUSE)Press the PLAY buttononce during playback toenter the Playback-Pausemode. In the Playback-Pause mode, [PAUSE]alternates with the currentmessage remainingplayback time on the LCDand the green LEDindicator goes out.

The Stop mode is automatically engaged if the recorderis left in the Playback-Pause mode for 30 minutes or theSTOP button is pressed during Playback-Pause mode.Press the PLAY button again to resume playback.

Fast PlaybackPress and hold the PLAYbutton for more than 1second in the Stop,Playback or Playback-Pause mode to start fastplayback at 30% fasterthan normal playbackspeed.

Press the PLAY button again to start playback at thenormal speed.Pressing the STOP button during fast playback stopsplayback and engages the Stop mode.

The message will be fast forwarded or fastreversed for as long as the button pressed.When the end of message (with fast forward) orbeginning of message (with fast reverse) is reached, therecorder pauses (for about 1/2 second), then starts fastforward or fast reverse of the next or previous message(as long as the button is pressed throughout).When the Fast Forward or Fast Reversebutton is released, normal playback or fast playbackresumes at that point.When this is done during playback pause, playback willstart after Fast Forward/Fast Reverse.

Forward Skip (F-SKIP)/Reverse Skip (R-SKIP)Press and release (for less than a second) the ForwardSkip or Reverse Skip button in the Stop,Playback, Fast Playback or Playback-Pause mode.Each time you press the button, the recorder skips tothe beginning of the next message or the beginning ofthe message in the corresponding direction.When the button is pressed in the Playback, Playback-Pause or Fast Playback mode, playback or fastplayback automatically starts at the beginning of the skipdestination message.When this is done during playback pause, playback willstart from the beginning of the message.

Erasing (ERASE)Erasing a single message (ERASE)

button in the Stop mode toPress theselect the message number to be erased.

Press the ERASE buttonfor less than 2 seconds.

The displayed messageNo. blinks and the LCDalso shows [ERASE] and[YES?] alternately.Press the ERASE buttonagain within 4 seconds.The LCD shows [ERASE]and the selected messagewill be erased.Performing this operationduring playback, fastplayback or playback-pause will erase themessage being played.

After a message has been erased, the message numberof subsequent messages will be decreased by 1.Erasing all messages in a folder (ALL ERASE)

Press the FOLDER/MENUbutton to select the folderto be erased (see page15).

In the Stop mode, pressand hold the ERASEbutton for more than 2seconds. The folder nameand [ALL] blink. The LCDalso shows [ERASE] and[YES?] alternately.

Press the ERASE button again within 4 seconds. TheLCD shows [WAIT] and all of the messages in theselected folder will be erased.

When folder [S] is selected, you cannot erase all themessages it contains. Only messages of a selected datecan be erased.

Resetting the recorder to the initial status (RESET)Press and hold the STOP and ERASE buttonssimultaneously for more than 2 seconds. The LCDshows [RESET] and [YES?] alternately.

Press the ERASE button again within 4 seconds. TheLCD shows [WAIT]. All messages in all folders areerased and the recorder is reset to the default setting.(This takes about 30 seconds.)This also resets the current time and other settingsto their initial status, and the recorder enters theclock adjustment mode.

If any button other than the ERASE button is pressedwhile the LCD shows [ERASE], [ALL ERASE] or[RESET] and [YES?] alternately or if the ERASE buttonis not pressed again within four seconds of the start ofthe alternate display, the message erase or resetoperation will be aborted and the LCD returns to theprevious display condition.

MESSAGE FOLDER MANAGEMENT

Types of FoldersThis recorder uses three folders, [A], [B] and [S].Folders [A], [B]

These folders are convenient for recording ordinarymessages. Each folder can store up to 99 messages.

Folder [S]This folder is convenient for schedule management. Thefolder can store up to 15 messages on a given date and 99messages in the whole folder. You can check the storedschedule at the selected time. By using the alarm playbackfeature, this folder automatically playbacks messages(see page 18).

Selecting a FolderEvery time theFOLDER/MENU button ispressed for less than 1second in the Stop mode,the displayed folder isswitched:

Moving a Message Between Folders [A]and [B] (MOVE)

While playing back (orpausing playback) amessage in folder [A] or[B], press and hold theFOLDER/MENU button formore than 1 second. Thiswill move the currentmessage to the lastposition in the other folder([A] to [B] or [B] to [A]).

Messages in folder [S] cannot be moved to anotherfolder.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Schedule Recording

Press the FOLDER/MENUbutton for less than 1second and select folder[S].Select the date for whichyou want to record aschedule by pressing the

button.Press the REC button. TheLED indicator lights redand recording starts.Press the STOP button tostop recording. Therecorder enters the Stopmode.

Schedule Playback

In the Stop mode, pressthebutton for less than 1second to select the datefor the schedule you wantto check.

When thethan 1 second in the Stop mode, the date where thenext message is recorded will be selected and therecorder will enter the Stop mode.Press the PLAY button. The LED indicator lights greenand all messages recorded for the selected date will beplayed in succession.Press the STOP button to stop playback. The recorderenters the Stop mode.Messages in folder [S] cannot be forward skipped orreverse skipped in the Stop mode. Forward skip andreverse skip are available only during playback, fastplayback or playback-pause operation.

Customized Alarm PlaybackSetting the alarm

Select the message youwant to use as an alarmplayback by pressing the

button sothat the message No. isdisplayed on the LCD (seepage 12).Press and hold theFOLDER/MENU button formore than 1 second toenter the Options mode(see page 22).In the Options mode,select the [ALARM] settingand press the

button to switch thealarm [ON]. (Press theFOLDER/MENU button.)The LCD showsThe "hour" and "minute"will start to blink. Set thedesired alarm time bypressing the /or

buttons(see page 23).

Press the FOLDER/MENU button to continue throughthe other options, or hit the STOP button to exit theOptions mode.Alarm playbackAt the specified alarm time, the recorder emits shortelectronic beep tones.Press any button while the beep tones are being emittedto playback the message set for that time.Press the STOP button to stop alarm playback.The electronic beep tones stop automatically if no buttonis pressed for 5 minutes after the beeping starts. Themessage is not played back in this case.

To change the message used for alarm playback, setthe alarm setting once to [OFF] and then again to [ON].If no message has been recorded in the current folder,the alarm is composed only of electronic beep tones.The alarm will be activated every day unless it is turned[OFF].

Schedule NotificationWhen a message in folder [S] is selected for alarmplayback, the day's schedule can be listened to at theselected time.

Press the FOLDER/MENUbutton for less than 1second and select folder[S].The LCD shows thecurrent date.Set the alarm (see"Setting the alarm", onpage 17).At the set alarm time, therecorder beeps. Press anybutton to play all of themessages recorded for thecurrent date.Press the STOP button tostop playback.

Recording with the VCVA (VCVA REC)(Variable Control Voice Actuator)

Press and hold theFOLDER/MENU button formore than 1 second toenter the Options mode. Inthe Options mode, select[VCVA] and set it to [ON](see page 23).

The VCVA activation level varies depending on themicrophone sensitivity.

In the Options mode, select the microphone sensitivity andset it as follows. (see page 22).

HI: Recording will be activated at low volume.LOW: Recording will be activated at high volume.To determine the appropriate activation level, perform atest recording now.

Press the REC button.When the recorder detectsa voice input, itautomatically startsrecording and the LEDindicator lights red. Whenthe voice input stops, therecorder automaticallystops recording withinabout 1 second and entersthe Standby mode.In the Standby mode, theLCD shows [STNBY] andthe red LED indicatorblinks.

Hold (HOLD)When the HOLD switch isset to [HOLD], the currentmode is locked and allbuttons are disabled. Thishelps to prevent accidentalpressing of buttons thatcan activate undesired

operations and is convenient when carrying the recorderin a bag or pocket.To conserve battery power, the LCD display disappearswhen the voice recorder is set to the Hold status in theStop mode.

Remaining Memory DisplayDuring recording, the LCD shows the remaining memorycapacity in time.

When memory capacityhas run out, the LCDshows [00m00s] togetherwith [FULL]. Recording isno longer possible.If you want to record amessage, eraseunnecessary messages(see page 13).When 100 messages havebeen recorded in a folder,the LCD shows [FULL] andrecording is no longerpossible.If you want to record amessage, use anotherfolder or eraseunnecessary messages.

When 16 messages havebeen recorded for aspecific date in folder [S],the LCD shows [FULL] andrecording is no longerpossible.If you want to record amessage, eraseunnecessary messages.

Checking Available Recording TimePress and hold the STOPbutton in the Stop mode.The LCD shows therecording time remaining,current message number,total number of messagesin the folder and remainingbattery power for as longas the button is pressed.

While using folder [S], theLCD will display the totalnumber of messages infolder [S]. This is a handyway to determine if youare near the message limit(99 messages per folder).

ENTERING OPTIONS

Press and hold the FOLDER/MENU button for morethan 1 second in the Stop mode to enter the Optionsmode.In the Options mode, each time you press theFOLDER/MENU button the displayed setting itemchanges in the following order:

Alarm (ALARM) Setting/CancellationIn the Options mode,display [ALARM] and pressthebutton to switch the alarmsetting between ON andOFF.

After switching [ALARM] ON, each time you press theFOLDER/MENU button "minute" and "second" figureswill blink in succession. Select the values for each item

Beep Tone (BEEP) SettingIn the Options mode,display [BEEP] and pressthebutton to switch the beeptone between ON andOFF.

When [BEEP] is OFF, no electronic beep tone will beproduced when a button is pressed (but the alarm tonewill still be generated).When you have finished setting an item, press theFOLDER/MENU button to go to the next setting item.

CARE IN HANDLING

Avoid subjecting the unit to directsunlight, high temperature, highhumidity or strong magnetic fields.

If the unit is exposed to water(especially rain or condensation),wipe it off with a clean, dry cloth.Always avoid contact with saltcomponents.

Do not use alcohol, thinner or otherorganic compounds for cleaning.

Do not place the unit on top of atelevision, refrigerator or otherelectrical equipment.

Be careful not to get dust or sandon the unit. This may damage theunit and prevent operation.

Do not subject the unit to strongvibration or shock.This may make it impossible for theunit to playback what you haverecorded.

If a magnetic card (i.e. ATM card orcredit card) is placed too close tothe earphone, damage to the datastored in the magnetic card mayoccur.

Always use the battery correctly. Fluid leakage, heatgeneration or explosion may occur if the battery is usedincorrectly. When the battery is replaced, be sure the +- polarity position is correct.Some batteries are the same size but have differentvoltages.Note the difference between dry type and rechargeablebatteries. Read the explanation for the batteries beforeusing them.When there is fluid leakage, wipe off the fluid from thebattery compartment and then insert the battery.Remove the battery when the unit is not used for morethan one month.If a battery is short-circuited, disassembled, charged orthrown into a fire, damage or ignition may occur.Poor contact may occur if the + - polarity symbols areobscured with oil or sweat. Wipe off the battery with aclean cloth before use.Be sure to bring extra batteries if the unit will be used forlong periods of time, i.e. lengthy speeches or lectures.
