Earlier this year, our teacher Mrs.

Vicki, asked classes from around

the world to participate in a wiki

about digital citizenship. Digital

Citizenship is a vast subject, so it

was hard to narrow it down to nine

aspects, but we did. My group,

Group 2C, got the topic of Digital

Rights and Responsibilities. My

group consisted of kids from Spain,

Australia, and the US. We covered

many topics; cyber bullying, online

predators, and identity theft. It was

great to work with kids around the

world, and hear what they think

about Digital Citizenship.

Edutopia

Edutopia is the magazine,

Web site, and video documentaries published by The George Lucas Educational Foundation. In September, they announced a contest the foundation was hosting. They were looking for “digital youth” who used technology in every aspect of their life they could. I sent in a video, with the help of Mrs. Vicki, and about a month later I found out I won! They came to our school and documented a day in my life. In June, Mrs. Vicki and I are kicking off their new website.

Woogi World Classes

Woogi world is a website that teaches kids internet safety, life values, and fun. After we were introduced to this wonderful game website, we had to teach the kids! My group, which consisted of Kunjan, Brady, Tyler S, Tinsley, and Ethan, taught the fourth grade class about digital citizenship through this website. I thank Mrs. Vicki for letting us do this, because if not, I probably wouldn’t have won the Edutopia Digital teen contest.

The Lively Protest was, I have to say, one of the most important things that has happened all year. It was the thing that got us the Open Sim island, and that got the 9th grade class famous in the digital world. I wrote countless blog posts, made movies, and our class held a protest in the virtual world; but despite our efforts, Lively was still shut down.

My igoogle page has been one of the most helpful things that Mrs. Vicki has showed us this year. It keeps everything organized for me. It is called a PLN, or personal learning network. One of my favorite things about my igoogle page is the cool apps, or applications, you can add to personalize it. My personal favorite is Word Whomp. I get really confused with all the different websites we have to go to, and my Igoogle page is very helpful with organizing and having all the links to the sites I need to go to.

Open SimAquarium

Hippo Open Sim has been a great project that we have been working on. It is a new virtual world that Trevor Meister introduced us to. After hearing our Lively Protest, Trevor gave us an island on Open Sim. We have been working so hard, and creating all new sorts of things on the island. I, with the help of Tyler and Trent, built an aquarium on the island. It took about 3 weeks, but we finally finished it. I am so glad I got to be a part of this experience, and I hope to build more exciting things on the Open Sim Island.

Open Sim School

The Hippo Open Sim school is really going to be one of the coolest things ever. We are hoping, that in about a week or two, we are going to be able to have actual students walk through the school and be taught digital citizenship. I am currently working on the Digital Literacy room, and I built the sign to go in front of the school. I am so thankful that we have an awesome builder (Tyler) that can build amazing things, like this, on the island.
