Preface

I was pleasantly surprised when Barry Olthof called to tell me he planned

to start a new label for Jazz and World Music Another label Arenrsquot there

enough

No Never Especially today when the big record companies and the laws of the

big numbers rule too often resulting in riskless music And the more while the

initiator of such a new label is very much a musician himself A drummer and a

sound engineer teaching his trade at the prestigious Royal Conservatory in The

Hague Barry Olthof is all ears and the first three CDs he presents on his new

OAP-label demonstrate so Three jazz CDs to begin with and a colourful

threesome with a variety of approaches towards jazz music that prove how

much alive jazz is Barry above all wants to build a platform for young musicians

he considers talented and adventurous With the sensitive musical poetry of

Maurits Roes the strikingly structured music of Ruben Samama cs and the

infectuous drive and composing skills of Guy Nikkelsrsquo Thinktank one could not

wish a more promising start These first OAP Records prove that jazz will be

alive and kicking whatever they say for ages to come

About the producer

Recording producer and sound engineer

Barry Olthof has been responsible for

the realization and recording of many CD

albums resulting in an extensive set of

recordings in various musical styles

Barry Olthof had already been working

as a recording engineer for many years

through Olthof Audio Productions He is

a talented musician who began playing

jazz-drums professionally an early age At

the Royal Conservatory in The Hague he

studied music registration and Jazz drums graduating cum laude in both with

masters degrees Since 2001 he has worked as a professor of music recording

and engineering at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague In 2006 Barry Olthof

started OAP Records as a logical step in his musical career

Through his experience and studies Barry Olthof became an expert in recording

techniques He possesses a wide knowledge of the timbre of microphones

preamplifiers effects and recording systems Barry Olthof has specific

concepts about sounds with a remarkable feeling for acoustics and balance

Barry Olthof stands for a direct transparent and open sound best described

as American inspired by Rudy van Gelder James Farber and Patrick Smith

Barry places great value on approaching the project from one vision fitting all

artistic expressions to the chosen style

started OAP Records in 2007 the youngest international

record label focussing on Jazz and World Music OAP

Records distinguishes itself through a direct transparent

and refined sound The atmosphere and the tension of the

music combined with the concentration of the musicians are

reflected in the recordings The productions are artistic

self-willed and timeless

The international artists contracted by OAP Records

distinguish themselves through extraordinary talent and a

Maurits Roes Trio Essential Elements

The first word that came to mind when hearing the debut cd of the Maurits

Roes trio was poetry Music and notes like the words of a poet searching for

what is unnameable and sometimes touching it From the haunting melancholy

of a Hungarian folksong to the pointillistic beginnings of lsquoPuppetsrsquo eventually

getting into a jazzdrive A dreamy romantic feel as one of the Essential Elements

in their musical journey

Maurits Roes is presenting you his first

CD which he recorded together with

Emanuel Donadelli and Andor Horvath Two

musicians with a complete different musical

background

Andor Horvath was born and grown up in

Hungary Andor started to study contrabass

in Budapest and continued studying at the

Royal Conservatory of The Hague

Emanuel Donadelli was born in Udine in Italy

He started his study at the conservatory in

Groningen for two years and finished the

Master study at the Royal Conservatory The trio has actually started to play

together three years ago Many jam sessions and concerts took place the last

few years

We tried and succeeded to capture the authentic sound when we played The

sound of the trio has elements of the sound of Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett trio

The recording is a mixture of songs and free improvisations

Today I had the pleasure

of listening to pianist and

composer Maurits Roes first

album as a leader I immediately

fell in love with the charming

melody and arrangement of the

opening song the Hungarian

Folksong The wonderful

contrast of the melody played

in unison by bass and piano

with that colorful re-harmoni-

zation is enchanting The solos

clearly introduce the listener

to the high level of creative

musicianship This CD takes us

on a journey through a varied landscape of rich sounds impressionistic colors

and fascinating rhythms - all the way to the surprising version of Coltranersquos

lsquoImpressionsrsquo

With bass player Andor Horvath and drummer Emanuel Donadelli Roes has

created a musical family that could successfully travel the road of Jazz and

improvised music for many years to come The playing and musicianship on this

debut CD is very mature rich and as they say separates the boys from the

men It is a rare treat to hear a young talented pianist present himself in such

a polished manner and with brilliant sound and technique There are sponta-

neous sketches of sound combined with traditional forms of music and itrsquos all

performed with great taste and respect for the repertoire The choice of songs

the exiting interplay the wonderful arrangements and the surprising interpreta-

tions make this CD an enjoyable and inspiring adventure for the listener

Ruben Samama Hotaru

What a surprisingly versatile and strong band bass player Ruben Samama

brought together here for his debut CD There is really a lot to be discovered

and enjoyed in this dynamic album the inescapable structures of the arrange-

ments the exciting and frenetic movement of lsquoJirsquo the touching way a classic

like Gordon Jenkinsrsquo lsquoGoodbyersquo is handled the inspired and to-the-point soloing

this is a band with a sound of its own What young cats This is jazz from and for

grown ups

Music played by great instrumen-

talists might mean nothing music

played by strong individualists might

be empty music played by great

musicians might lack coherence

in fact music is not about instru-

mental level it is not about individu-

ality or musicianship Music and

surely improvised music is about

togetherness about listening about

give-and-take Music is first of all a

human emotion

These young musicians understood the above so surprisingly well They are all

strong instrumentalists strong individualists strong musicians but what is

more important they used these assets to do something much more important

they created strong and fresh music together

Under the inspiring guidance of Ruben Samama who brought some exception-

ally original music to the session this band made an exceptional recording

Nuanced fearless gentle angular melodic rhythmic playing by musicians who

might be the heroes of tomorrow

It has been fascinating to see

how the Royal conservatory in

Den Haag has been attracting

young players from many

countries

and to see how they have been

inspiring each other This

band is a prime example of the

meeting of different nationalities

and influences Ruben Samama

a young (1985) Dutch bassist

who has been studying with me

since he was 14 years old is

turning out to become an excep-

tional young lion on his instru-

ment He surrounded himself with Slovakian pianist Michal Vanoucek (1977) who

is a strong composer and band leader in his own right and versatile drummer

Marc Lohr (1981) who is a native of Luxembourg From Finland came Kalevi

Louhivouri (1984) wonderful expressive trumpet player and last but not least

we find Alexandra Grimal (1980) from France playing the saxophone with this

band Except for Kalevi all students or ex-students of the Royal conservatory all

strong players but more so all artists

I knew this group was going to record and since they are all such accom-

plished musicians and instrumentalist I expected a good recording with some

nice perhaps slightly immature music perhaps a bit lacking in coherence or

artistic clarity But I was positively shocked when Ruben gave me a copy of the

master Oh yes everybody plays well very well and yes everybody has a strong

individual colour and yes these are fine young musicians but the music

is so very strong The compositions are remarkably fresh highly original the

concept of the whole recording is very coherent the level of interaction the

group sound the dynamics the sense of adventure the energy all these

elements are on a very high level indeed

Gentlemen chapeau for this wonderful hour of music You did more than

impress me you touched me

Thinktank Pek Dek

Biography

Thinktank was founded at the Royal

Conservatory of The Hague and

consists of four musicians whose

music can be considered

as versatile as it is adventurous

and is based upon traditional

Jazz as well as more contem-

porary elements of western

popular music Even though the

compositions have been written

or arranged by individual band

members the interaction is the most important aspect of the bandrsquos music

giving it a typical ldquoworking bandrdquo feel

All graduates of the conservatory each one of them is currently working as a

freelance artist in the field of Jazz Fusion and World Music to name but a few

styles Guy Nikkels has worked with Michael Brecker Kenny Werner and John

Ruocco Rein Godefroy plays in various bands like Panchito (latin jazz) and the

Paul Van Kemenade Quintet He has also played with Benjamin Herman Eef

Albers en Simon Rigter Hendrik Vanattenhoven played with Kenny Wheeler and

Wynton Marsalis and is a frequently asked bassplayer in Holland as well as in

his native country Belgium David Barker has toured with the European Youth

Jazz Orchestra and has also played with Michael Brecker Kurt Rosenwinkel and

Dutch artists such as Rob van Kreeveld and Eef Albers

Pek Dek is their debut album on the OAP Records label and is bound to turn

some heads

It always is a surprise when

musicians each of whom yoursquove

heard before in various bands or

during widely divergent jamses-

sions suddenly happen to form

a band together And when I

say band I really mean band

As is the case with Thinkthank

and their first CD effort Pek

Dek They sound very close

like theyrsquove been working a lot

together before like they know

each other musically inside out

Maybe thatrsquos one of the reasons

why you loose the feeling the

music on their debut cd Pek dek was recorded in a studio and instead get and

enjoy the sensation of a live performance

Two compositions of Wayne Shorter embrace their first cd the Guitar player

Guy Nikkels is a warm surprise with his improvisational lines in which he ndash slow

or fast ndash always allows an emotional sensibility a non-sentimental sweet-

ness and an ear for melody Pianoman Rein Godefroy is a real joy to hear and

as a composer delivers the beautiful and heartbreaking ballad Thinking of E

Composing anyway proves to be a strong point in this ensemble for each of the

musicians brings in no nonsense pieces with fine improvisational possibilities

Bassplayer Hendrik Vanattenhoven in the first place Besides being a stronghold

with a very personal voice he contributes four songs of which Major changes is

indeed a major one Drummer David Barker shows himself a sensitive musician

with an exact feel of where to be in the composition to lead to sustain to push

forward

After listening two or three times to Thinktankrsquos Pek Dek I had that same old

feeling when I listened to a inspiring night of jazz in a concerthall or on any

stage Glad it happened thankful that this way of making music is still possible

blending individuals together in a team effort without losing their idiosyncracies

and ownness finding each other in one common language for very individual

voices Thatrsquos what jazz is all about

Nina Ebbenhout When we kiss

Singer Nina Ebbenhout presents herself

on her debut album lsquoWhen we kissrsquo in a

surprising and confident way The album

title (taken from one of the two own compo-

sitions she includes) speaks of a feeling of

romance in her vision of life and music A

look at the other songs she chose confirms

that ldquoCry me a riverrsquo lsquoClose to yoursquo

lsquoDevil may carersquo lsquoHerersquos that rainy dayrsquo

There are even more classics from the

American songbook here sung by many

always different and Nina Ebbenhout

adds with poise and confidence her very

own emotional vocal approach With a striking feeling for delivery stressing

and prolonging different notes and especially with a well-chosen and essential

lsquotimersquo keeping the songs open leaving space so that vocals and accompani-

ment together are getting more lsquovoicersquo Nina Ebbenhout knows how to sing

lsquojazzyrsquo but she can be the classic lsquosongstressrsquoas well ( lsquoBoth sides nowrsquo) who

takes place behind the piano for her own very personally frased love song

lsquoConfusedrsquo (she studied piano at the conservatory) The jazz-element is stressed

in the tasteful arrangements by piano- and keyboardplayer Menno de Boer who

makes some striking choices As for the attractive and sensitive lsquofillsrsquo by young

jazzmusicians like Suzanne Alt (soprano and altsax) David Lukaacutecs (tenorsax

clarinet) and Reneacute ten Cate (vibes) Or as in his lsquolatin feelrsquo for an unusually fast

and swinging version of lsquoThe days of wine and rosesrsquo in which singer Nina does

her own backing vocals With the opening song of the album (by Chris Smither)

Nina Ebbenhout asks lsquoLove me like a manrsquo musically speaking the request is

almost superfluous

In many ways singer Nina Ebbenhout embodies twenty-first century musicianship combining an open-minded and contempo-rary approach with educated craftsmanship and a thorough knowledge of tradition

She studied classical piano at the Conservatory of Utrecht where she graduated in 2002 took singing lessons from prominent educators and developed her compositional skills As a rising star in the Dutch jazz scene she attracted the attention of OAP Records a new label that

promptly offered to record her debut album

The result is ldquoWHEN WE KISSrdquo a superbly recorded display of versatility from this talented artist Nina wrote two originals and surprises with an interesting choice of repertoire ldquoI deliberately included some pop songs that are not normally considered lsquostandardsrsquo because a part of me wanted to get away from what is commonly regarded as Jazzrdquo

But turn into a pop album it certainly has not In fact one could convincingly argue that it successfully fuses the universal appeal of popular music with the well-crafted elegance of Jazz Or in Ninarsquos own words ldquoWe jazzed up the pop songs and gave the standards a make-overrdquo Ninarsquos working band also contributed substantially to the general vibe and sound of the recording They form a tight unit swinging cohesively and sparingly throughout the album thereby giving the featured soloists plenty of room to shine ldquoI was lucky to find some of the nationrsquos best instrumentalists willing to participate They really added a lot of extra flavorrdquo

And indeed many flavors are to be savored on this album which dishes out jazz and pop up-tempo grooves and ballads in almost equal servings Of course the thing that glues it all together is Ninarsquos clear voice sometimes softly whispering sometimes joyfully laughing but always captivating and capable of seducing the listener over and over again All in all ldquoWHEN WE KISSrdquo is a mature and solid debut album of an artist who can be qualified as lsquocontemporary-yet-timelessrsquo

Orion Ensemble Touched by Orion A wonderful world

Founded in the year 2000 the

Orion Ensemble is a chambermusic

company which specializes in the

development of original programs

for chambermusic podia The artful

combination of vocal and instru-

mental music with the spoken

word plays an important part in

most of the works The heart of the

company is a pianotrio made up of

several core members Additional

musicians and a narrator are

added as required in each partic-

ular performance

The Orion Ensemble has made several recordings on CD including Astor

Piazzolla Works for Pianotrio in 2003 and more recently Een Spaanse dag en

Argentijnse nachten (a Spanish day and Argentinean nights)

Artists

Leonard Leutscher studied piano and music theory with Gerard Hengeveld

and Jan van Dijk at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague and with Thom

Bollen in Zwolle (the Netherlands) For some years he was affiliated with

the Conservatory of Zwolle as teacher of music theory At the moment he is

part of the Orion Ensemble while presiding over teaching several courses at

the Instituut for Kunstzinnige Vorming in Emmen and for lsquoHet Luisterrijkrsquo in

Utrecht

Carla Schrijner studied cello at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague with

Jean Decroos She took courses with Paul Tortelier and Boris Pergamenschikov

For years she was a member of the The Brabants Orkest (the Netherlands) At

present Carla Schrijner is cellist in the Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest the

Rotterdams Kamerorkest and the Orion Ensemble

Pauline Terlouw studied violin with Wolfram Koumlnig For years she was member

of the Gustav Klimt Quartett Currently she performs with the Orion Ensemble

She is also violist in the Metropole Orchestra and concertmaster of the Pierre

drsquoOr Ensemble In 2005 she became a member of the Dutch String Trio and also

co-founded lsquoHet Luisterrijkrsquo in Utrecht

Timeless music people will

always feel attracted to in

all sorts of forms The Orion

Ensemble derives its name

from the mythological figure

Orion the seeker for beauty and

ultimate love who according to

tradition was eventually immor-

talized in a particular constel-

lation in the sky The music

lsquotouchedrsquo by the Orion Ensemble on this cd has a particular form as well Would

it ever have occurred to jazztrumpeter Louis Armstrong that his song What

a wonderful world would be performed in an elaborate form for piano-trio Or

to Glenn Miller that his Moonlight Serenade for big band would also sound as

jazzy and smooth in a strength without the wind section The Orion Ensemble

arranged all kinds of highlights for the strength of the classical piano-trio

violin cello and piano resulting in this cd A melancholy world full of music in

which Glenn Miller Sergej Rachmaninoff Astor Piazzolla and John Williams

excel side by side The common factor in these compositions is melancholy a

positive sadness which may arise from the wonder and awe one feels for nature

for a human life for beautiful music for art in general Music combined with

text is full of definite meanings but when words are left out that very same

music acquires an unknown freedom and an enchantingworld reveals itself a

world of sounds in which the listener will find out himself what it is that moves

him

Marzio Scholten Motherland

Marzio Scholten was born on June 17th 1982 in

Granollers Spain In 2006 he graduated cum laude

at the prestigious Conservatory of Amsterdam

where Marzio has studied with Jesse van Ruller

Martijn van Iterson and Maarten van der Grinten

and followed workshops by Kurt Rosenwinkel

John Scofield Pat Martino John Clayton Chris

Potter and many others Marzio is the leader of

his Marzio Scholten Quartet and Marzio Scholten

Group with which hersquos touring regularly around

the Netherlands and abroad presenting his

compositions in modern jazz Besides leading

these bands Marzio plays in various other groups

and has worked with various artists as a session

guitarist (live and studio work) Some of the more

famous venues and festivals where he has played are Bimhuis Vredenburg

Utrecht Jazz Fest The Hague Jazz Jazz in Duketown East of Eastern Festival

Amersfoort Jazz Festival and SJU Jazzpodium His album lsquoMotherlandrsquo will be

released in 2008

The Marzio Scholten QuartetGroup exists of

great musicians from the new generation of

Dutch jazz musicians who make contempo-

rary jazz sound as if it was invented yesterday

The quartetgroup mainly presents compo-

sitions by the bandleader These composi-

tions are characterized by beautiful melodies

playful sounds and rhythms and improvisa-

tion Growing up in modern times the young

musicians in this band mix modern jazz with elements of contemporary music

like pop and rock The style of Scholtenrsquos music can be best described as

lsquomodern creative jazzrsquo

a jazz guitarist with a broad

approach to jazz Both in his

compositions and improvisations

I have associations with different

generations of jazz guitar

masters like Pat Metheny Jim

Hall John Scofield and Jimmy

Raney but also clearly the influ-

ence of what else has been going

on in pop music for the last 20-30

years You can hear fusion jazz-

rock pop and bebop combined

with the warmth of an acoustic

group coming together in what you could call an acoustic-fusion group Thatrsquos

what I like about this album itrsquos definitely music from this time

Furthermore nothing but big compliments to the other musicians great

soloing great groove This band deserves the chance to musically connect even

more by getting a lot of playing opportunities
