Basically, jewellery adorns the body, and has very littlepractical purpose.

Researchers are looking to change the way we thinkabout the beads and bobbles we wear.

The combination of microcomputer devices andincreasing computer power has allowed severalcompanies to begin producing fashion jewellery withembedded intelligence i.e., Digital jewellery.

Digital jewellery can best be defined as wireless, wearable computers that allow you to communicate byways of e-mail, voicemail, and voice communication.

The concept of this ring comes from how youmanage to

IBM's design team has made this digitalnecklace and ear rings though they pretend to

be like jewellery actually they are not. There will be one microphone in the necklace

using which we can transfer messages andthese ear rings consists of speakers

    embedded in them to listen.

The EMJ devices function similarto regular or traditional jewelry, and can be developed in a varietyof forms, including rings (a),

necklaces (b), earrings (d), pins, brooches, bracelets, and also as astand-alone piece of jewellery thatis a small sculpture of sorts (c).

The EMJ devices can also have

multiple-functions as bothwearable art and even as a typeof communication device with infrared(IR) transmission and reception displays.

    Technical Specifications

Digital jewellery devices consist of a screen or displayfor information, most likely consisting of 7-16-segment,or dot matrix LEDs, LCDs.

An audiovisual or other'display' could consist of a

speaker, a single flashing light, a sensor of some kind. The display layer sits on a face of the device, which is

enclosed in some material such as plastic, metal, crystal, or other material.

It has external switches and buttons on its side and adata-port for accessing the programmable electroniccircuit inside.

A micro controller that is a surface mounted device(SMD) on a printed circuit board (PCB) with resistors (R)

and capacitors (C) are the internal'guts

    'of the jewellery.

    DisplayTechnologies

Digital Jewellery utilize electromagnetic properties andelectronics to display information through a screen ordisplay of some kind.

This could range from LED 7-segment, 16-segment, dotmatrix, and other programmable LEDs devices to LCDs,OLEDs, and other displays.

Through methods involving cognitive processes of recognition on an

individual level identifying elements of personal significance a seriesof practice based investigations will be undertaken exploring memoryand significance.

These investigations are firstly intended to look at the notion ofsignificance, then significance in interactive objects and aim to showthat there are possibilities through the use of contemporary jewellery

knowledge to enable interactions that are unusual and new. The IDEO design company has proposed for the design of CELL

    PHONE RING and TOE JEWELLERY.

As this digital jewellery is related to wirelesstechnology there is a great scope of hacking.

Charging capability of the elements will be a veryvital problem including the cost.

There may be some unwanted changes in theparts of human body by the continous usage of

jewellery due to the radiations it emits. There is scope of decline in the quality of theproducts that are used by the individuals.

This technology will be much more useful toladies rather than gents as jewellery is mostlyworn by them.

The basic idea behind the digital jewelleryconcept is to have the convenience of wireless,

    wearable computers while remaining fashionablysound.

It is hoped to be marketable soon, however,

    several bugs remain.

Charging capabilities and cost are just a sampleof the problems that lurk.
