Digital  Footprint          

Internet  -­‐  Google  Search    Open  your  Internet  browser  and  go  to  Google.com.    

1. Search  by  name.    Type  your  name  in  quotation  marks.    “John  Doe”    

2. Next,  search  by  your  full  name  and  any  nicknames.  “John  Robert  Doe”  and  “JR  Doe”  

 3. Other  searches  to  conduct  include  your      

• email  address,  • phone,    • home  address.  

Set  up  an  alert    

1. Google  can  alert  you  to  new  content  containing  your  name,  email  address,  phone  number  and  home  address.    

2. Go  to  Google  Alerts  page  http://www.google.com/alerts.    

3. Type  your  search  term  in  the  box.    Include  quotation  marks  around  the  search  term  to  avoid  irrelevant  alerts.    

4. Determine  how  often  you  would  like  an  update  sent  to  your  email.    

5. Add  your  email  address.    

6. Press  Create  Alert.

Digital  Footprint        Facebook    Review  your  photos  and  status  updates    Visit  the  following  Facebook  Apps  to  analyze  your  Facebook  content.    My  Year  in  Status:    Add  this  App  to  your  Facebook  account.    You  can  choose  to  not  publish  the  results  so  others  will  see  (recommended).    A  summary  will  appear  of  your  posts  from  the  previous  year.    Take  a  moment  to  view  your  posts.    After  reading,  how  would  you  describe  yourself?    Is  it  positive  or  negative?    If  negative,  how  can  you  improve  future  posts?        My  Year  in  Photos:    Similar  to  My  Year  in  Status,  a  collage  of  pictures  appear  from  the  previous  year.    Again,  we  do  not  recommend  you  post  the  App  results  to  your  Facebook  page.    Viewing  your  photos,  how  would  you  describe  yourself?    Do  you  see  any  embarrassing  or  inappropriate  images?    Are  there  photos  of  you  taken  by  friends  that  you  did  not  approve?      Privacy  Settings    

1. Check  your  privacy  settings  periodically  as  they  often  change.    

2. Click  the  gear  icon  in  the  top,  right  corner.    

3. Choose  Privacy  Settings    

4. Change  any  item  that  is  set  to  public.        

5. Make  sure  search  engines  cannot  link  to  your  timeline  as  well.    

6. From  the  right  toolbar,  choose  Apps.        

7. Change  any  App  feature  from  public  to  friend.

Digital  Footprint            Access  Activity  Log  and  View  As    View  your  Activity  Log  to  review  what  you  are  sharing  with  others.    Click  the  Activity  Log  button  located  under  your  cover  photo.    Use  the  View  As  feature  to  view  how  others  see  your  profile.    To  access  View  As,  click                              below  your  cover  photo.    Choose  View  As.        With  View  As,  you  can  see  how  the  public  views  your  posts  and  how  your  friends  view  your  posts.    Use  the  black  toolbar  to  determine  public  or  a  specific  friend  view.          

   Twitter    Twitter  accounts  default  to  a  public  profile  unless  you  utilize  the  settings  feature.    Click  here  for  the  Twitter  Guide  to  learn  about  setting  up  an  account,  following  others  and  Retweeting.    

Profile    Choose  the  Me  tab  located  in  the  top  toolbar  to  access  your  profile.        Review  your  Tweets,  photos  and  other  account  information.      

 To  update  your  profile,  choose  the  gear  icon  in  the  top,  right  corner.    Choose  Edit  Profile.    What  does  your  profile  reveal  about  your  character?        Do  not  include  your  location  to  protect  your  privacy.

     Set  Account  to  Private      With  a  private  account,  users  must  ask  to  follow  you.    Only  those  that  follow  you  can  view  your  Tweets.    Your  Tweets  cannot  be  Retweeted  as  well.      

1. Click  the  gear  icon  in  the  top,  right  corner.    

2. Choose  Settings.    

3. Check  “Protect  my  Tweets”  under  Tweet  privacy.    

Note:  If  a  user  changes  an  account  to  private,  past  Tweets  remain  public.  

 

Set  up  alerts    Using  Twilert,  set  up  an  account  to  track  you  or  your  child's  Twitter  handle.    Click  here  for  a  step-­‐by-­‐step  guide.      

Inappropriate  Tweets    A  user  may  receive  inappropriate  tweets.    Such  instances  include  sending  an  inappropriate  link  or  photo,  posting  unwanted  messages,  repeatedly  posting  the  same  message,  creating  a  fake  account  and  using  the  @reply  or  @mention  with  malicious  messages.  

Notify  Twitter  using  the  following  steps.  

1. Go  to  the  user's  account  profile  by  clicking  on  the  username.        

2. Click  on  the  person  icon  located  below  the  username.        

3. Click  Report  @username  for  spam.

     Block  a  User    A  blocked  user  cannot  view  your  profile,  follow  your  tweets  or  send  you  direct  messages  and  mentions.    

1. Go  to  the  user's  account  profile  by  clicking  on  the  username.          

2. Click  on  the  person  icon  located  below  the  username.          

3. Choose  Block  #username.    

 Check  for  SPAM    If  you  receive  a  Tweet  including  a  Mention  or  Direct  Message  that  appears  suspicious,  do  not  open  the  link.        If  you  know  the  person,  send  them  an  email  asking  about  the  tweet.    At  times,  an  account  can  get  hacked  and  an  inappropriate  tweet  is  sent.        If  it  someone  you  do  not  know,  use  the  directions  above  to  block  and  report  spam  to  Twitter.

Digital  Footprint        Instagram    Instagram  connects  to  other  social  networks  like  Twitter  and  Facebook.    See  the  information  above  to  protect  your  Instagram  photos  you  post  on  Twitter  or  Facebook.    To  learn  more  about  using  Instagram,  click  here.    

Set  your  account  to  private    Your  account  is  public  unless  you  change  the  settings.    Once  private,  users  will  have  to  ask  permission  to  follow  and  view  your  photos.    

1. Go  to  your  profile  by  tapping  the  bottom,  right  button.      

2. Press  the  gear  icon  in  the  top,  right  corner.    

3. Move  the  slider  from  Off  to  On  under  Photos  Are  Private.    Android  Users:    Tap  Photo  Privacy  and  tap  the  box.  

 

Review  your  photos  and  comments    Similar  to  your  Facebook  review,  analyze  your  photos  in  Instagram.    What  types  of  photos  do  you  take?    What  does  it  reveal  about  your  activities?    Are  there  any  photos  you  would  be  embarrassed  to  show  your  family,  teachers,  coaches,  employers  or  college  recruits?        Review  your  comments  posted  on  your  photos  and  others.    If  someone  you  didn’t  know  you  viewed  these  comments,  what  would  they  say  about  your  character?    Would  they  see  you  as  a  good  friend?    Statigram  is  a  free  service  to  analyze  your  Instagram  account  sending  daily  or  weekly  statistics.    Statigram  also  provides  a  comment  tracker.    http://statigr.am/      

1. Keep  it  original.  Do  not  repost  another  work  as  your  own.  2. Get  permission.    Do  not  post  photos  of  others  without  permission.      3. Be  a  good  friend.    Do  not  post  embarrassing  and  inappropriate  photos  of  your  

friends.  4. Post  positive  comments.

Photo  Maps    When  you  share  a  photo,  make  sure  not  to  turn  Photo  Map  on.    Each  time  you  take  a  photo,  Instagram  notes  your  location.                      

 

 

Block  a  User    When  you  block  a  user,  he  or  she  cannot  view  your  photos  or  search  for  your  account.    

1. Tap  the  Explore  button  in  the  toolbar.    

2. Search  by  username  to  locate  the  profile.    Tap  their  username  from  the  search  list.    

3. Tap  the  arrow  icon  to  reveal  options.        

4. Tap  Block  User.  

Delete  Comments    Delete  comments  of  others  users  on  one  of  your  photos.    

1. Tap  the  Comment  button  located  under  your  photo.    

2. Swipe  your  finger  from  left  to  right  over  the  comment.    A  box  will  appear  with  two  options.    Click  the  trash  can  icon.      

 3. Press  Delete.  

Android  Users:    After  Step  1,  click  the  pencil  icon.    Press  the  red  “X”  and  Delete.

Flag  a  Photo  or  Comment    Notify  Instagram  of  inappropriate  photos  and  comments  by  flagging  or  reporting  abuse.    All  reports  are  anonymous.    Photo  Under  the  photo,  tap  the  three  dots  (…).    Choose  Flag  as  Inappropriate.    Comment  Under  the  photo,  tap  the  Comment  button.    Locate  the  inappropriate  comment.      Swipe  your  finger  from  left  to  right  over  the  comment.    A  box  will  appear.    Choose  Report  Abuse.    

SnapChat    Although  this  App  has  simple  features  and  messages  self-­‐destruct,  SnapChat  can  still  influence  your  digital  reputation.        

Sending  Photos    Once  you  take  a  photo,  you  determine  who  gets  to  see  it  –  initially.    You  can  send  photos  to  your  mobile  device  contacts.        However,  the  recipient  can  choose  to  take  a  screenshot  of  the  photo  before  it  disappears.      

Settings    Press  the  icon  in  the  bottom,  right  corner.    Click  the  Settings  button.    Edit  account  information.    Under  Send  me  Snaps,  change  from  Everyone  to  Friends  only.    Note:    Even  though  a  message  will  self-­‐destruct,  the  recipient  can  take  a  screenshot  of  the  message  to  save.

   Sexting    "Sexting"  is  a  term  used  to  describe  inappropriate  photos  or  text  sent  via  a  mobile  device.    Many  believe  that  SnapChat  is  safe  as  the  photo  will  self-­‐destruct.    Unfortunately,  control  is  lost  once  any  message  is  sent  online.            

1. Keep  it  original.  Do  not  send  another  work  as  your  own.  2. Get  permission.    Do  not  send  photos  of  others  without  permission.      3. Be  a  good  friend.    Do  not  send  embarrassing  and  inappropriate  photos  of  your  

friends.  4. Do  not  post  embarrassing  and  inappropriate  photos  of  yourself.  

           

Checklist  for  all  sites      

☐ Check  your  privacy  settings  on  all  online  accounts.    ☐ Post  positive  messages  and  comments.        ☐ Control  of  content  is  lost  once  you  post  online.    Ask  yourself  –  do  I  feel  comfortable                if  my  parents,  teachers,  coaches,  employers  or  college  recruiters  viewed  this                message  or  photo?    ☐ Post  with  permission.    Ask  your  friends  if  you  can  post  a  photo  that  includes  their                  image?    ☐ Report  any  abusive  or  inappropriate  messages  and  photos.
