What is Digital Disruption?

8

Defined:

Digital disruption is an effect that changes the fundamental expectations and behaviors in a culture, market, industry or process that is caused by, or expressed through, digital capabilities, channels or assets.

-Gartner

Digital disruption is the change that occurs when new digital technologies and business models affect the value proposition of existing goods and services.

What is Digital Disruption?

9

Digital disruption is a transformation that is caused by emerging digital technologies and business models. These innovative new technologies and models can impact the value of existing products and services offered in the industry. This is why the term ‘disruption’ is used, as the emergence of these new digital products/services/businesses disrupts the current market and causes the need for re-evaluation.

Digital Disruption: The Market Doesn’t Lie

15

“The average lifespan of a company listed in the Standard and Poor index of leading US companies has decreased from 67 years in the 1920s to just 15 years today”

-Richard Foster, Yale

In 8 years’ time, “more than ¾ of the S&P 500 will be companies we have not heard of yet”

Seventy percent of the companies that were on the Fortune 1000 list a mere ten years ago have now vanished

Business Agility Defined

16

Agility is the ability of a business to react quickly to change by:

• Quickly sensing threats, problems and opportunities; and

• Rapidly responding with solutions that address business and customer needs

• By efficiently changing processes, responsibilities, rules, data and technology

• To realize expected business and customer outcomes

What Business Agility Is (and is Not)

17

• Business Agility vs. Project Agility

• Business agility uses Agile concepts but encompasses the entire organization (culture, leadership, market responsiveness, etc.)

• Business Agility learns from Agile– but it is more than ‘doing Agile’

• Business Analysts may not be able to impact Business Agility- but need to be aware of it and how agile your company is

• Enterprise BAs should be integral in understanding this

• Digital disruption threats to your company and which departments and products are most at risk

• Enterprise plans and readiness to address disruption

• If possible– using our analysis skills, raising potential disruptions up to leadership

• Project/Team BAs

• Should understand what digital disruption is and how it will impact elicitation and requirements analysis at your company

How Business Agility Impacts IT

18

• Introducing tools to be faster

• Mobile apps/tablets

• Cloud computing/SAS

• Finding the best fast process– or combinations of them to get the job done quick

• Lean, Kanban, XP, Skunkworks

So What Does All This Mean to the BA?

20

• More projects

• Faster turnaround

• BRUF just isn’t going to cut it

• Lean, Agile, Feature Driven Development, etc. are the new norm

• More web/internet

• All of your competition is coming from the internet. So that’s where YOU have to compete

• If you aren’t in the Cloud- you’re being rained on

• New business models/new competitors

• Crowdsourced loans: Who has ever done requirements for this before?

• P2P home insurance: It’s still being invented-- so where do you get history? Knowledge? Standards? SME’s (there are none!)

So How can the BABOK Help?

New to BABOK 3.0: The BACCM

BACCM - Change

22

Change The act of transformation in response to a need.

Change works to improve the performance of an enterprise. These improvements are deliberate and controlled through business analysis activities.

-BABOK 3.0

© 2017 Trissential LLC – An entity of SQS Group |

Impact: The Business Analyst need to identify the root cause, and what needs to be changed and why. Get beyond the ‘this is what the stakeholder asked for’, understand why it’s needed, what the underlying problem is, and use this to guide what we think we should change in response.

The BA should also apply logic, experience and analytical thinking to make sure that the change being addressed is done orderly and with thought behind it (“deliberate, but with speed”).

Page 23: Digital Disruption and Business Agility: What Do These ...€¦ · Your Presenter 4 Mark Hunt, CSM • Sr. Business Analyst, Engagement Manager, Scrum Master @ Trissential • Co-Chair

BACCM - Need

23

Need A problem or opportunity to be addressed.

Needs can cause changes by motivating stakeholders to act. Changes can also cause needs by eroding or enhancing the value delivered by existing solutions.

-BABOK 3.0

© 2017 Trissential LLC – An entity of SQS Group |

Impact: Not all needs require a change that an IT project needs to address– it might require procedural changes, cultural changes, organizational changes. It’s important to understand what the need is before deciding what has to be changed.

Use root cause analysis to be sure the business understands the real problem and true need– not just what they ‘think’ it is

Page 24: Digital Disruption and Business Agility: What Do These ...€¦ · Your Presenter 4 Mark Hunt, CSM • Sr. Business Analyst, Engagement Manager, Scrum Master @ Trissential • Co-Chair

BACCM – Solution

24

Solution A specific way of satisfying one or more needs in a context.

A solution satisfies a need by resolving a problem faced by stakeholders or enabling stakeholders to take advantage of an opportunity.

-BABOK 3.0

© 2017 Trissential LLC – An entity of SQS Group |

Impact: As a Business Analyst it’s our responsibility to investigate the proposed solution and confirm that it addresses the Need.

We should also ensure that the solution covers all of the changes needed to resolve the Need, or if there are other changes that also need to be deployed before the Need is addressed (e.g. we just delivered a new app that allows consumers to apply for a crowd-sourced car loan– but no one is building the network of underwriters that need to back them)

Page 25: Digital Disruption and Business Agility: What Do These ...€¦ · Your Presenter 4 Mark Hunt, CSM • Sr. Business Analyst, Engagement Manager, Scrum Master @ Trissential • Co-Chair

BACCM - Stakeholder

25

Stakeholder A group or individual with a relationship to the change, the need, or the solution.

Stakeholders are often defined in terms of interest in, impact on, and influence over the change. Stakeholders are grouped based on their relationship to the needs, changes, and solutions.

-BABOK 3.0

© 2017 Trissential LLC – An entity of SQS Group |

Impact: Teaches us to discover who our stakeholder is. What drives them, what do they need, what is their influence, what is their background. Ask ourselves– why do they need this change? Or just as important, do they even know? • For example, if we are building a new crowd sourced auto loan system– do our

stakeholders fully grasp what that means? Do we need to build knowledge together before proceeding? In today’s world don’t assume the stakeholder has all the answers.

Page 26: Digital Disruption and Business Agility: What Do These ...€¦ · Your Presenter 4 Mark Hunt, CSM • Sr. Business Analyst, Engagement Manager, Scrum Master @ Trissential • Co-Chair

BACCM - Value

26

Value The worth, importance, or usefulness of something to a stakeholder within a context.

Value can be seen as potential or realized returns, gains, and

improvements. It is also possible to have a decrease in value in the form of losses, risks, and costs.

Value can be tangible or intangible. Tangible value is directly measurable. Tangible value often has a significant monetary component. Intangible value is measured indirectly.

Intangible value often has a significant motivational component, such as a company's reputation or employee morale.

In some cases, value can be assessed in absolute terms, but in many cases is assessed in relative terms: one solution option is more valuable than another from the perspective of a given set of stakeholders.

-BABOK 3.0

© 2017 Trissential LLC – An entity of SQS Group |

Impact: What’s important to the stakeholder? Gross sales? Market share? Web hits? The old measures (e.g. ROI) may not mean as much your stakeholders today

Page 27: Digital Disruption and Business Agility: What Do These ...€¦ · Your Presenter 4 Mark Hunt, CSM • Sr. Business Analyst, Engagement Manager, Scrum Master @ Trissential • Co-Chair

BACCM - Context

27

Context The circumstances that influence, are influenced by, and

provide understanding of the change.

Changes occur within a context. The context is everything

relevant to the change that is within the environment.

Context may include attitudes, behaviours, beliefs,

competitors, culture, demographics, goals, governments,

infrastructure, languages, losses, processes, products,

projects, sales, seasons, terminology, technology, weather,

and any other element meeting the definition.

In Closing

28© 2017 Trissential LLC – An entity of SQS Group |

• Digital Transformation is affecting all of us in one way or another

• As BA’s, even if we do (or don’t) have control over Business Agility, we need to be aware of it and how are company is addressing it

• BA’s need to be prepared to a changing landscape– defining requirements for business processes that are new and even undefined.

• Lean on the BABOK to help ensure you are focusing on everything that you should– leave no stone unturned!
