DIGITAL CITIESCreating healthier, wealthier and safer cities for the future
“Our partnership with the Thinklab has brought cutting-edge technological innovation into how we plan for and respond to emergencies, including helping us to identify and support some of the most vulnerable in society”
Kathy Oldham, Head of Civil Contingencies and Resilience Unit, Association of Greater Manchester Authorities
Creating sustainable cities requires a stronger collaboration between a range of public and private sector organisations to ensure cities are safer, healthier, intelligent and prosperous places for citizens to experience an enhanced quality of life. In response we have developed a range of novel technology platforms that will allow public and private organisations in a city to utilise the power of their data intelligence to make collective evidence-based decisions to address the challenges faced by cities. We have an experienced R&D team to develop customised technology platforms for bringing city information into a discussion space through advanced visualisation and interaction technologies.
We are specialised in the following areas:
❙ Facilitating collaboration among city stakeholders.
❙ System platforms that integrate dispersed data sources for creating integrated information spaces for cities.
❙ Data mining that can extract patterns and correlations.
❙ Advanced visualisations of complex social, economical and environmental datasets over 2D and 3D city models.
❙ Easy to use interfaces for exploring “what-if” scenarios.
Our technology can be used to develop and implement new partnership models for delivering various policy agendas as well as engaging with local communities in bringing local visions to life.

“In this data rich world where mapping is the new technological frontier. The work that The THINKlab delivers is hugely important. Working with the Resilience Community it is essential that key data sources are incorporated into our multi agency work across Local Resilience Forums to aid in situational awareness”
Luana Avagliano, Head of Resilience Direct
Building Resilient Cities Building resilience in a city for disasters requires multi-agency collaboration. Our modelling and simulation work in disaster management allow multi-agencies to collectively assess and reduce the social and infrastructure vulnerabilities of a city. The knowledge about the remaining vulnerability can be used by the agencies during a disaster event to further reduce fatality and economic impact. THINKlab has received £1.2m from EPSRC to create a collaborative multi-agency platform for building resilient communities in Sri-Lanka, Pakistan and Malaysia. This project is applying system dynamics, real-time satellite data and social media to provide intelligence to emergency services to reduce the impact of disasters.
Urban Simulation Our 3D urban modelling and simulation work allow many stakeholders to come together to co-design and co-create their local futures. It allows planners to assess the proposed design from various perspectives, taking the input from all the stakeholders including the local citizens.
Flood Simulation In collaboration with the Environment Agency a digital city platform has been developed to demonstrate the impact of oods around the river Irwell near the University of Salford. It allows ood resilience teams to explore the impact of oods on the build environment as well as the natural environment and take steps towards building ood resilience.
Troubled Families This multi-agency project brought together a range of un-connected social datasets to model the social dimensions of a socially deprived area in Manchester. It demonstrated how such an information rich virtual city could be developed to bring new intelligence, insight and interpretations within the complex policy domain of ‘troubled families’

Many modern knowledge companies experience
challenges in embedding innovation, creativity,
entrepreneurial spirit and user-centricity. Although many
company executives recognise the need for promoting
innovation within their own organisation, the question
is how this can be achieved? How to escape the tunnel
vision and to see opportunities, find connections, cross-
fertilisations and make use of the knowledge and learning
available in organisations and society? How to build
confidence to innovate within an organisation?
THINKlab, designed as a Future Centre, provides the
conditions for innovation. By combining our innovative
facilitation techniques, brain storming technology and
multi-sensory spaces, THINKlab provides a highly creative
environment for participants to envision future possibilities
and develop practical innovation.
Government organisations can use the THINKlab for

The new digital age is reshaping the way learners are interacting with subject matter. Gaming technology, integrated with novel interactive devices and mobile technology, is oering educators a new way of engaging with their audiences at all ages. Through play one can learn new scientic concepts, develop various skills (e.g. social, cognitive) and gain the self-condence to engage in new experiences and environments.
THINKlab has a team of interactive game developers who have a track record in delivering interactive learning and training systems for a range of organisations including BBC, Psappha, GM Fire & Rescue Service.
We are specialised in the following areas:
❙ Motivational gaming environments that are based on Unity and Kinect interfaces.
❙ Augmented reality environments that can combine real and virtual objects.
❙ Multi-sensory environments that combine 3D acoustics, visualisation and haptic technology.
❙ Interactive training systems customised for training employees in specic work related tasks.

Steve Naybour, S&C South Alliance
“The 4D Simulation environment developed by THINKlab is an outstanding example of a technology and digital approach being applied to drive better incomes not just for construction and industry but for wider society as well”
Construction Excellence Judges
The manufacturing and building construction sectors are now under severe pressure to remain competitive; pressure that is derived from the globalisation of the economy and the current economic climate; pressure to produce greener products due to climate change and the scarcity of resources. Organisations now need to consider how best to enhance the performance of their products by involving stakeholders in the innovation process, ranging from R&D groups with new technological inventions and know how, to design and simulation teams with specialised skills, to companies with low-cost and sustainable manufacturing capabilities, to maintenance and operation teams, to name but a few.
In response to this demand THINKlab has already completed six major European projects, involving over 50 European partners, and developed novel distributed technology platforms that can support team collaboration among distributed multi-functional teams.
Through this R&D work, we have an experienced team that can develop customised collaboration solutions for both the construction and manufacturing industries. We are specialised in the following areas:
❙ Development of distributed technology platforms that can integrate various product information sources and simulation services to provide integrated problem solving environments.
❙ Advanced product visualisation environments that can enhance team collaboration among multi-functional teams.
❙ Support for building team collaboration using the THINKlab methods and tools.

“The reaction to the VR model of our oshore electrical substation, produced by the THINKlab, has exceeded our expectations. It has saved us time and money by improving our design review process and it has helped us quickly communicate how our product operates to potential customers. We plan to use this tool in our future development of onshore and oshore electrical substations and to train Operations and Maintenance sta for our installations”
Nigel Platt, System Engineering Manager, Siemens
Virtual Oshore Electrical Substation - SiemensAn interactive virtual model of Siemens new Oshore Electrical Substation allows users to explore the Substation in real time. The model makes use of Oculus Rift HMD technology allowing users to be immersed within the virtual world. Siemens have used this model as part of their design, safety reviews, launch and customer demonstrations.
CrossDriveCROSS DRIVE targets on creating the foundations for collaborative distributed virtual workspaces for European space science. Using this system, distributed scientic and engineering teams can meet within a virtual representation of Mars to analyze scientic data and plan future missions. THINKlab contributed with their expertise in collaborative environments and virtual reality, designing and implementing the Collaborative Workspace, providing a common framework and allowing distributed teams to work together in a shared 3D space using telepresence technologies.
Design4Energy As a part of the EU funded Design4Energy project, THINKlab has created an innovative Integrated Evolutionary Design Methodology that allows stakeholders to predict the current and future energy eciency of buildings. It allows stakeholders to make better informed decisions to enable the optimisation of the energy performance at the building life cycle level, including operation and maintenance.
4D Simulation Environment for Rail Track Renewal - Network RailWinner of National Construction Excellence for ‘BIM Project of the Year’. This 4D Simulation Environment has been developed for Network Rail to plan track renewal programmes through a visual interface. It oers an interactive environment to consider a range of planning options involving labour, materials, equipment and to visualise potential scheduling issues.
