I wanted to write a song to open my show, so Tommy Lee James andClaude Kelly and I got together and wrote this song. It has tons of energy and really describes how I feel when I walk out onstage. “It’s like I waited my whole life, for us to be together this one night.” I believe a concert is an experience we all share together and a memory we make together, so this is really a song I wrote for my fans.

ALWAYS BE THIS WAY(Brett James, Hillary Lindsey, Martina McBride)

I wrote this with Hillary Lindsey and Brett James over some great Mexicanfood. We wanted to write something breezy, playful and fun, that youcould play ukulele on. It was loosely inspired by “I’m Yours,” by JasonMraz and “Hey Soul Sister,” by Train. We had a lot of fun writing it…throwing out lines like “boom, boom, boom” and “they’re so stupid,” just for fun and then saying, “I like it! Let’s just say that.” I have lots of fun singing this one. Jimi Westbrook came in and sang harmonies with me.

I ’m GonnaL ove You Through It

(Ben Hayslip, Sonya Isaacs, Jimmy Yeary)

This song really moves me. I remember the first time I heard it. It was at a meeting where people from publishing companies play

you songs they hope you record and it just stopped everyone in their tracks. It is so honest and has words that you don’t normally

hear in a song. I know it’s heavy, but I also think it’s so hopeful. I love that it also tells the story of the support person, in this case

a husband. When I played the demo for John he said, “That’s what I would say to you.” I think it’s what everyone would want to

say or hear if they were in this situation. I’ve heard from so many people that this song has touched their lives. When I sang it I got

chills from head to toe for the entire song. I still do when I sing it live. That has never happened to me before....

Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain”

MARRY ME featuring Pat Monahan of Train (Pat Monahan)

When we did Crossroads for CMT with Train, we performed this song. It was their single at thetime. It’s not done as a duet on their record, but I love it as a duet. I think it’s interesting too be-cause you don’t hear us sing together until the last chorus...and these two people are wanting to get up the nerve to speak to each other, each thinking the other is “The one.” So, I love that they tell their stories separately and then come together at the end. Pat’s voice kills me...he is just such a great and emotional singer. He came to the studio and we recorded it together. It was a magical day and I think it’s a magical song.

Broken Umbrel la (Mark Irwin, Josh Kear, Chris Tompkins)

It was really difficult to get this song recorded and it went through many changes. We actually cut it twice! I love what we ended up with. I always knew I wanted to put horns on it. I have never used horns on an album. They sound so fun and cool! When I hear this song I just hear “fun,” and it’s so visual…I see a whole video in my head. This is one to drive around with the top down and it cranked up loud! That’s Carolyn Dawn Johnson singing those cool background vocals.

"ou Can GetYour#ovin’Right Her$(Martina McBride, Leslie Satcher, Rachel Thibodeau)

I love this! Leslie Satcher and Rachel Thibodeau

were writing and I stopped by and next thing

I know Leslie is playing a bit of this for me and

saying, “This would be so different for you and so

SEXY!” in her Texas drawl. She was so excited

about the idea I jumped right in. I love this record

we made on it too. Once again, using horns.

And that funky guitar tone is perfect. I told John

to go for a real retro kind of drum sound. I put

real finger-snaps on it too! First time I’ve ever

snapped on a record. Oh snap! I’m going to have

so much fun singing this live.

WHATCHA GONNA DO(Rebecca Lynn Howard, Jason Sever, Rachel Thibodeau)

Talk about fun to sing! This one made it on at the last minute. I had the

album recorded and needed to finish it to turn it in. This song came in

and I said “I wish I had more time! I would record this in a heartbeat.”

Then I got a call from the record company saying they wanted to move

the release date to later. So, my first thought was “I DO have time to

record this song!” I love the feel of it and the words and the melody…just

everything about it! It’s a really simple, rootsy sound, which is what I set

out to do with this album initially. Just simple tracks and production that

really let the songs shine through. I feel like the person in this song is

torn...I think it’s sassy and strong, but vulnerable at the same time. She

wants him to change. But she’s ready to move on if he doesn’t. I haven’t

really sung a song with that attitude in a while. It reminds me, sentiment-

wise, of something like “Whatever You Say.” My other LBT buddy, Phillip

Sweet, came in and sang on this song. Perfect.

Page 7: Digital Booklet - Eleven

This is a song inspired by my real life! I was writing with the Warren Brothers and Brett had the ideato write a song with this feel. We wanted it to feel kinda like “Me And Bobby McGee.” He startedsinging the words in the first verse and it was going to be about stuff that was going on in theworld and how it’s all about the perspective you have on things. Well, Delaney and I were goingthrough what she refers to as “a bit of a rough patch,” meaning I probably didn’t hear herand she thought I was ignoring her, or maybe I didn’t agree with her plans for theevening or something. You know, typical stuff. John took her to school that day andwhen he got home he asked what was going on and I said, “What do you mean?”He said, “In the car, Delaney said, ‘Mom hates me.’ I actually laughed andtold him that was obviously ridiculous and I had no idea what she wastalking about.” I told the Warrens this and I was just explaining what atrip it is to have a teenager. You go from being the center of their uni-verse…they think you are cool and hilarious and they will do sillythings with you…to feeling SO not-cool! It’s not for the faint-of-heart!And not only are you now just the “parent,” you really DID used to becool. A little rebellious. Daring. YOUNG! Well, they definitely don’t seeyou that way. You are just mothers and fathers…of teenage daugh-ters. So I said, “That’s what we should write about!” And about 45 minutes later we had a song. It came so easy and it was so much fun to write. We had a lot of laughs that day. When we finished, Delaney walked in and we played it for her…she loved it. I wanted to make this record kinda reckless and not too polished. That felt like the right way to sing it too. This song is fun to do live…I see so many people nodding their heads and smiling in agreement! The cool thing is, teenage daughters like it too!

!ummer o" #ov$. (Tommy Lee James, Hillary Lindsey, Martina McBride)

The day we wrote this I came in with this title. I don’t really know where it came from, but I knew I wanted to write a song called “Summer of Love.”

I wanted it to be a story song about having and losing love…kind of a “Strawberry Wine” sentiment. One thing I love about it is that it’s open for interpretation

and creating your own story. We deliberately didn’t say what year it was or how long ago it was, or what happened that these two couldn’t be together. It could be

about a first love…or not. The people in the song could be teenagers…or not. It’s really about finding love, and having to move on but never really forgetting

how it felt. And we all wonder whether people in our past ever think of us…I think that’s a pretty universal feeling. I love the simplicity and emotion of this track.

And I love Jimi Westbrook’s vocal on this. In my mind it’s kind of like the other person, the one she is remembering, is thinking of her too. Sweet.

I remember how time sto od stil l and how you made me feelLike you were mine forev er, lying there together, that summer of lo v e

Tangled up in a big blue sky, like we c ould almost f lyAnd ev ery now and then I wonder if you think about us

When You Love A Sinner(Chip G. Boyd, Jay Clementi, Kacey Musgraves)

This is a beautiful piece of songwriting. I aspire to write a song like this someday.

There are so many great lines in it. It’s simple and complex all at the same time.

It’s honest, real, strong and vulnerable. I never get tired of hearing it.

#ong Dis%ance#ullaby (Mark Irwin, Josh Kear, Martina McBride)

I wrote this song with Josh Kear and Mark Irwin. I knew that I was going to Atlanta to record my album for a fewdays, leaving Delaney, Emma, and Ava in Nashville. I knew it was going to be difficult for all of us to be awayfrom each other and I just drew from that. Also, there have been times when I have been away from them and got that phone call with one of them upset…that is so hard. It doesn’t really have to be about your kids though. I think it’s about being away from anyone that you love and sending your love to them in your thoughts. By theway, that’s actually Ava’s foot tapping throughout the song. Her little Converse Chuck Taylors tapping away!

I wish I could giv e you a kiss from a thousand milesSleep wel l, my lov e…

Tonight when you clo se your eyesHear my long distance lul laby
