ABSTRACT
Erik Ady Prasetyo. 2016. Melancholy in Edgar Allan Poe’s The Oblong Box and The Fall of the House of Usher (Stylistic Approach). Thesis: English Department, Faculty of Cultural Science, Sebelas Maret University.
The research aims to examine the melancholy as reflected in Edgar Allan Poe’s two short stories entitled The Oblong Box and The Fall of The House of Usher through the figurative language and its significance. The objective of the research are: 1) to describe the style or figurative language in the short stories, and 2) to analyze how Poe utilized the style in order to express melancholy.
The research belongs to the descriptive qualitative research. The reserch
uses Stylistic approach and the concept of melancholy by Markus Treichler (2008). The data are collected through the technique of close reading in order to see each word, phrase, and sentence from the short stories. The data are taken from the sentences that utilized figurative language and express melancholy.
The result of analysis is divided into two parts: 1) The style in the two
short stories, and 2) The melancholy in the two short stories. From the first part, it has found nine figurative language which are used in the two short stories. They are Antithesis, Euphemism, Hypallage, Hyperbole, Litotes, Metaphor, Personification, Poysindeton, and Simile. Among these figurative language, Metaphor and Personification are frequently used in the short story, because they can create a vivid effect to express melancholy. From the second part, there are two stages of melancholy in the short stories based on treichler’s concept of melancholy. They are, 1) suffering for the condition of the world, and 2) suffering for the condition of oneself. Keywords: Stylistics, Melancholy, Figurative Language, Edgar Allan Poe

ABSTRAK
Erik Ady Prasetyo. 2016. Melancholy in Edgar Allan Poe’s The Oblong Box and The Fall of the House of Usher (Stylistic Approach). Skripsi: Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Universitas Sebelas Maret.
The Fall of the House of Usher.
cerpen, and 2) Unsur melankoli dalam dua cerpen.
