What is a Digi-Pack?
A digi-pack is usually made from cardboard and includes a front
cover, back cover and two inside covers with a middle cover to place a CD. This is the most
common layout however it can vary depending on how
complicated the artist wants it to be.
The front cover will usually be a picture of the band/ artist and the
back will be a list of songs featured in the album.
What identity is being created for the following
artists? How?
Is the genre apparent? How?
How do you think the target audience affect the
aesthetics?
Tokio Hotel- Humanoid
Identity- The front cover features a humanoid creature and so it gives the impression that the band are unlike any other and unique. An industrial
image also springs to mind when looking at the text as it looks like it has
ben made from metal.
The genre is electronic rock. This is definitely apparent as the humanoid is
connected to electric wires etc. creating a robot like creature. The whole CD cover is made to look like metal and is a dark industrial area creating a mysterious atmosphere.
The target audience are rock fanatics and so the uniqueness of this CD cover will appeal to their rock interest. They
are likely to be edging into metal music as well and so this image fits in
with the electronic rock/pop genre.
Lady GaGa- ArtPopThe identity that is being created is an
arty atmosphere. The image on the front is a mystery as it looks like a clay figure however the more you look the more it doesn’t look like one. It has a strange illusion which represents Lady GaGa
very well.
The genre is apparent as firstly the title of the album basically gives it away. However the blue ball in the centre
connotes a disco ball and disco balls are connoted with pop. Also the Lady GaGa text in the background is pink and shiny which also connects to the shiny disco ball enforcing the pop connotations.
Her target audience are those aged between 13-30 and are more likely
female. The pink is to appeal to them and the shiny features attract them. The fact that GaGa is nude could be to attract the
male audience however as she is well known to be quirky and unusual this is
not too much of a surprise.
American Authors- Oh What A Life
The identity that is created here is that the band are from American. This is obvious in the name
however I noticed the scarf which is cleverly coloured using the American flags colours. Also
they are identifying themselves as being creative as the drum which is shown is covered in paint/
chalk. The text on the drum is hand written which also supports this. The back of the CD consists of them standing in front of a book shelf. The fact that they’re on the back and the drum is on the front suggests that they care more about their music than themselves. The bookshelf could
portrait the stereotype of the a nerd.
The genre is a little hard to decipher as there is a drum, brick wall and scarf which are not in any particular types of genre stereotype. However it
certainly isn’t screamo or punk.
The audience affects the aesthetics as they are positive and creative people. At least that’s what
the CD covers suggest. The drum on the front could represent the extreme music lovers in their fans. The American themed scarf could suggest that most of their fans are American and so they
are dedicating it to them.
