Oral Cavity

Oral Cavity

• The oral cavity is the entrance to the GI tract.

• The epithelial lining of the oral cavity is a nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium.

• The oral cavity has two distinct regions: The Vestibule and The Oral Cavity Proper

Pharynx

Pharynx

• The pharynx is the common space used by both the respiratory and digestive systems.

• The pharynx is divided into three regions: Nasopharynx, Oropharynx, Laryngopharynx

• Three skeletal muscle pairs, called the superior, middle, and inferior pharyngeal constrictors, form the wall of the pharynx.

Esophagus

Esophagus

• The esophagus is a tubular passageway for swallowing materials being conducted from the pharynx to the stomach.

• The inferior region of the esophagus connects to the stomach by passing through an opening in the diaphragm called the esophageal hiatus.

• In the adult human, the esophagus is about 25 centimeters long, and most of its length is within the thorax, directly anterior to the vertebral bodies.

Stomach, or hot air balloon?NOT a good life style choice

Stomach

Stomach

• The stomach is a muscular, J-shaped sac the occupies the left upper quadrant of the abdomen, immediately inferior to the diaphragm.

• The stomach is composed of four regions: Cardia, Fundus, Body and Pyloris.

• The stomach also includes: Greater Curvature, Lesser Curvature and Gastric Folds.

Large Intestine

Large Intestine

Also known as the “large bowel”

It is split into 5 sections: Ascending ColonTransverse ColonDescending ColonRectumAnal Canal

Small Intestine

• The small intestine is also called the small bowel.

• The small intestine is composed of three regions: Duodenum, Jejunum, and Ileum.

• The duodenum is the first segment of the small intestine.

• The jejunum is the middle region.

• The ileum is the last region.

Anus

Anus

At the base of the anal canal are the internal and external anal sphincters, which close off the opening to the anal canal and open during defecation..
