Advertising Industry

Photography is used in the advertising industry because it is an effective way of drawing in the viewer to want to know more about a product. Advertising photography is the main type of photography because it is also used in many other industries to help sell products or advertise a film/TV programme. It is effective because people usually remember an image easier than a slogan or any text used in advertising and it is also the first thing that a person will see when looking at an advertisement. Many companies use celebrities to advertise their products as people recognise them and will associate a celebrity with their products when they see them in magazines, films and so on.

Fashion Industry

Photography is used in Fashion in may different ways, big fashion companies use it in magazines, shops and to capture big fashion events such as catwalks. Shops use photography to show what ranges they have on offer and what will be appearing in future seasons, they do this by having their adverts in magazines, usually shops have a main model that they use for their adverts that people will recognise when they see them. This is an effective way of getting people to either go into their shops or go online. Another way they fashion companies use photography is to have their clothing products online, this is an easier way for people to shop and they’re still able to view the products. Well known fashion photographers are Irving Penn, Patrick Demarchelier and Nick Knight.

Photography is a very effective way of getting different bands and artists out there, their images can be used online and in magazines all over the world, as most things are judged on the way that people look these days , if someone likes the look of a certain band or artist they will look for their music either online or in shops. Photo journalism

Photojournalism is a form of journalism that uses a photo to tell a news story. When using photography in photojournalism you usually get a sense of what the article you are about to read is about, these images are used to capture a viewers emotions . Well known events are captured by photojournalists and used with articles giving more detail of the story, this is effective because it draws people attention in and makes them want to know more about whichever story it is an image is being used for, it is also effective because people can look back on certain events and they can be used to remember events. Such as 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, images used in news stories when these events were unfolding are still used today for people to remember and to remind people that we can carry on from such horrific events. Other events such as the 2012 summer Olympics were covered a lot by photojournalists, newspapers and magazines were covered with photos showing people winning and losing, not much story is needed with images like these because you can see from the peoples faces what the outcome was, photojournalism was an effective way of covering the Olympics because you can see more of a person reactions from a photo, rather than it being wrote about.
