Rivera: 1886-1957

Born in Mexico His family wasn’t rich,

but lived a comfortable life

He did well school and always loved drawing

Studied painting at a University when he got older

Later traveled to Europe continue his studies and paiting

Diego Rivera was a bigger man with a round stomach and disheveled black hair

Influences & Style

His paintings and murals were very influenced by politics

He himself was part of the Mexican Communist Political Party

In his murals he portrayed his opinions on politics and historical events

Although He was known mostly for his murals, Rivera did do portraits and cubist paintings

His wife, Frida Kahlo influenced his paiting, he often painted her in his murals

During Rivera’s time…

The First World War had began in Europe Mexico’s famous revolutionary, Emiliano

Zapata, was fighting for Mexico’s freedom

Zapata believed the land should be returned to its people

Diego himself took action in the Revolution starting the Mexican Communist party, taking inspiration from the soviets

Analyzing an Individual Reproduction of a Work…

1. These picture don’t have a lot of dark portions, it’s very bright.

2. Yes, the different values and colors set a happy, fresh mood.

3. It uses all the hues in the color wheel, it doesn’t follow any certain color scheme.

4. They are high intensity. 5. There are a lot more warm colors (reds,

oranges, yellows, and pinks) than cool (blues, greens, light purples).

6. Yes it does in a way create a three dimensional space because there are layers of squares and rectangles. It looks like the picture is folding in on itself.

7. The cool colors guide you to see a picture of a landscape against the layers of bright shapes.

8. There are a predominant concentration of warm colors in the middle of the picture, taking up a lot of space.

9. With the lines layering and overlapping lines the Artist breaks away from reality, it gives this painting a true cubism feel.
