in the trial of three persons accused of kidnapping two Bahraini nationals.

The accused, aged 27, 29 and 40, abducted the duo following a dispute on an illegal drug deal, according to court files.

One of the victims allegedly pocketed BD2,200 paid by one of the accused for a large quantity of hashish.

The victim allegedly delayed handing over the drugs, prompting the trio to abduct him, and a friend who was with him at the time of the incident.

The duo were kept in a stable in Sanad for a night, where were put along with a surly

dog. “They told me if I want to go home, I have to contact one of my relatives and arrange to return the money,” the victim involved in the drug deal told prosecutors.

“I contacted my brother and they asked him to meet them near Sitra Mall to handover the money,” he added.

The brother reported the incident to police, who planned an ambush to arrest the alleged captors while receiving the money.

However, the trio reportedly didn’t show up because ‘they felt’ that they were being surveyed by police.

They were eventually nabbed after the victims were released, who informed police about the accused’s whereabouts, according to court files.

Call for tougher regulations on dangerous water sports DT News [email protected] Manama

Residents of a coastal town in Bahrain demanded

the authorities to set tighter regulations on water sports and activities in the country. The call was made by the residents of Budaiya town, which is located on the northwest coastal line of the island.

The area has witnessed an increased number of

complaints lately as they claim jet-ski riders pose threats to the town’s public beachgoers.

A group of residents recently pointed out, “the scene of jet-skis being ridden near

the beach, not very far away from children swimming in the water, is very scary and pose chance for dangerous accidents.”

They also mentioned that

such occurrences increase during weekends and public holidays, adding that such dangerous performances are made by visitors from outside the town.

Tougher regulations on water sports needed

The area’s parliamentary representative MP Hamad Al Dossary confirmed that there’s no compromise on the safety of the public, affirming that he will seek imposing tougher regulations on water sports in Bahrain.

“Tight supervision is important to prevent accidents and calamities. Certain guidelines should be set and introduced to the public on the use of jet-skis and small boats near public beaches. This step should be taken by Interior Ministry’s Coast Guards,” Al Dossary said.

He further explained that he had received numerous complaints from the residents of Budaiya regarding the reckless use of jet-skis and speedboats at the town’s public beach.

He commented, “The irresponsible behaviours of some people, who endanger the lives of the public, calls

for an immediate intervention to ensure the safety of the

residents of Budaiya and the beachgoers.” The lawmaker

called for launching an awareness campaign to educate jet-ski riders, as well as beachgoers and parents on the basics of safety near beaches.

Al Dossary opined that riders should attend training courses that are organised by the authorities concerned, before being permitted to ride jet-skis and small speedboats. He added that an age-limit should also be imposed on riding such marine vehicles.

Al Jazayer beach children’s park soon to get a facelift

Hapless condition of the playground had kept visitors awaySanthosh Rajendran/DT [email protected]

Manama

The Al Jazayer beach, which was once a loved

leisure venue and tourist location, had lost its sheen due to its hapless condition, including rusted play equipment and protruding iron parts. However, the place is soon to get a major facelift, with an aim to retrieve its lost glory.

The beach, located 5 kilometres south-west of the Bahrain International Circuit, will be upgraded with more facilities including sustainable retail shops, leisure activities, and innovative facilities and services, according to Bahrain Real Estate Investment (Edamah), which has taken up the facelift project.

A visitor, Abudullah Al Ahmed told DT News, “We love this beach because of its calm and peaceful surroundings. But, lately we don’t encourage our children to come here and as the equipment are rusted.”

“But we are seeing renovation works these days. So it is good news that in near future, we will be able to visit the beach with more facilities. As of now, the poor condition

of the play area such as the swing set, slide and monkey bars invite danger to our children. We are hoping the renovation completes soon,” he added.

Edamah officials confirmed to DT News, “We are currently redeveloping Al Jazayer beach. The redevelopment plan is part of Edamah’s larger investment strategy to upgrade and improve facilities, providing an economic boost to the area.”

“A comprehensive maintenance programme is being carried out, which includes the restoration of old playground equipment. The renovation works have already commenced and should be completed in a few months,” the official said.

Parliament to discuss expansion of vital roadDT News [email protected]

Parliamentarians will vote on a proposal to expand a vital road

in the Northern Governorate that witnessed severe traffic congestion during rush hours, it was learnt.

The proposal will be submitted by Public Utilities and Environment Parliamentary Committee. Committee members suggested adding two lanes on each side of the existing two-way Wali Al Ahd Highway, alongside Hamala, Jasra and Souq Waqef.

They explained in a report that will be reviewed by the Parliament House on Tuesday that making the vital road a three-lane highway would reduce the congested traffic in the area.

The report mentioned that “Wali

Al Ahd Highway is considered one of the main roads in the Northern Governorate that is packed with service and commercial outlets.”

“The road needs to be re-planned and expanded to serve citizens and residents. The annual increase of registered vehicles in the country requires reconsidering the narrow road, which is unable to accommodate the rising numbers of vehicles,” committee members explained.

They also said that the committee has communicated with the related authorities including Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry and Northern Area Municipal Council.

“The ministry clarified that the existing pipelines on the side of the road near Hamala makes expansion works a far shot, yet, the ministry

explained that another expansion project that is being implemented in a nearby highway (Janabiya Highway) would reduce the congested traffic of Wali Al Ahd Highway,” committee members said.

“The ministry also said it’s studying converting the highway into a one-direction road. The municipal council informed that the expansion project has already been approved,” the members added.

Wali Al Ahd Highway is one of the busiest roads in the Kingdom, as it passes through vital institutions such as schools, markets, farms, cultural centres and some units of Bahrain Defence Force.

The road is also known for fatal accidents. As reported earlier, a woman was killed and another one was injured in a horrific accident that took place on Wednesday.

Ashoora: Violations handled in accordance with the law

DT News [email protected]

With the ongoing clamours over the recent conflicts

between security forces and groups of lawbreakers in some of the Kingdom’s villages, Interior Ministry has reaffirmed that “it’s the Ministry’s duty to ensure general order during religious rituals.”

The Ministry said in a press statement, “Freedom of religion is protected in Bahrain’s constitution and

is widely respected. In this context, Interior Ministry provides a police service that ensures general order during religious rituals by protecting places of worship and securing religious celebrations such as Ashoora.”

“During the current religious occasion, the police have encountered a variety of violations relating to the location and content of temporary structures and decorations. Objects that were erected in places that hindered

traffic safety were removed along with banners containing political or sectarian slogans,” the Ministry clarified.

The statement added, “There are a wide array of well-known areas and locations

allocated for banners and flags. Police removed objects that obstructed traffic safety, putting lives at risk, or that encouraged sectarianism. However, the vast majority of Ashoora decorations remain on display throughout the country.”

The Ministry reiterated that the main concern with the decorations that have been removed is that they have intentionally used the religious occasion to exploit sectarian tensions.

As reported earlier this week, few clashes occurred in a number of villages, mainly located in the Northern Governorate and Western Area. The clashes took place while Public Security personnel removed some of the banners and decorations hung up at the villages on the occasion of Ashoora and Muaharram commemoration, but, contained political and sectarian phrases.

Chief of Public Security General Major Tariq Al Hassan revealed earlier that policemen were attacked with Molotov cocktails and homemade guns during the processes.

As a kid, art was Nariman’s escape to happiness. As she grew up she knew that art will be her everlasting happy place

Fatima Bastaki/[email protected]

Times of hardships and struggle for life could not

simply put Nariman Adel off from devoting herself for art. Even at difficult times, Nariman paddled her boat with confidence, which lead her to the realisation of all her passions towards art and designing.

Nariman Adel is a young Egyptian artist cum designer who has spent all her life in Bahrain. During her stay in Egypt, she was greatly inspired by her grandfather who is the reason she became a self-taught artist. Both her grandparents were creative people as her grandfather gave her colouring supplies and taught her how to sketch, while her grandmother taught her embroidery and knitting.

As a kid, art was Nariman’s escape to happiness. As she grew up she knew that art will be a her everlasting happy place.

After facing few years of difficult times moving in with just her mother and sisters, this shaped and developed the source of strength and determined Nariman felt to bring out the best in herself

and to make her mother proud.

Her passion grew and branched out towards other interests such as music, photography, baking and gymnastics.

As she failed to find a fine arts course in the country, she pushed for a field that would somehow lead her to her love for art. So she applied for Interior Design and she will be graduating this year.

Talking to DT News, Nariman revealed her philosophy, “The development of my art is in a never ending journey because it is the only way I can be myself.”

When Nariman volunteered in Al Riwaq’s The Nest, she got to know more about the artists’ community, and this encouraged her to apply for the stencil workshop there which opened a huge door for Nariman as an artist. This experience also opened a gate to another community of artists as she applied to Malja’s Call Out to get her art visible.

Nariman’s world of art versatility

Speaking to DT News, Nariman Adel explained how taking such initiatives gave her the courage to open doors as she said, “I got the chance of having two months training in an interior

design company which made me more confident about my work as a designer. So joined a youth group to volunteer in doing some designs or construction work for events. Recently I have been visiting places and doing a lot of photography everywhere. And I got a job with an interior designer as a 3D modelling person, and this is the most exciting time of life.”

Speaking about herself as an artist and designer, she expressed that, “Art is another form of equality; it

only looks at the similarities not differences. Art is about all about the feeling it gives. I tend to make everything

and everyone around me my source of inspiration, observation is the best weapon for an artist.”

“My works of art are very diverse in their nature. Sketching was the first art form I tried. Then I started doing more of the ink detailed art. I also tried stencilling and handcrafts. I do photography as well I don’t have access to a sketchbook or any sort of artist materials.”

“As a designer it is all about making people comfortable and at home because these are the two main things that everyone wants to feel, and that is why I love it. I am currently a freelance interior designer where I make 3D modelling of places, and getting a

good experience in design by learning the process of work to know people’s expectations and ideas.” Nariman’s artworks

MPs demand shutdown of Reef Island liquor outletsDT News [email protected]

MPs demand to shutdown liquor selling outlets on

a residential manmade island in the Capital continue, despite the authorities confirming that “there are no violations of the law.”

This came in a report of Parliament’s Public Utilities and Environment Committee, discussing a proposal submitted in March to shutdown outlets in Reef Island that serve alcohol beverages.

The committee has communicated with several ministries and authorities, in regards to the alleged violations on the island. Violations included illegal construction works and unpermitted sale of

liquor products in a residential area.

In its reply, the Interior Ministry confirmed, “all outlets and tourism restaurants on the island are permitted to serve alcohol products to their clients, except one unlicensed outlet, which is currently facing legal procedures.”

The same was mentioned in Industry and Commerce (now Industry, Commerce and Tourism) Ministry’s reply, which stated, “Violating outlets would be referred to the Public Prosecution and are subjected to disciplinary procedures.”

In regards to the construction-related violations on the island, Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning stated that all existing buildings were

constructed legally, while the violating construction works that has been recently initiated was halted until official permission is obtained.

Capital General Secretariat said the violations on the island don’t come within its jurisdiction. It commented, “The issue between tenants and the landlord should be solved legally through courts.”

As reported earlier by DT News, several residents of Reef Island expressed their concern about the operation of several bars in their residential buildings, with strangers, who they claimed are usually under the influence of alcohol, walking in and out from their buildings at late hours.

Since then, the issue between the landlord and tenants has

been going back and forth in local media, with one statement

from each party every now and then. Yet, no final decision has

been announced from both parties.

Court ruling will be heard on November 17 in the

trial of a Thai woman accused of drug peddling. The accused was captured after police received a tip-off indicating that she was selling drugs in the area of Manama. Cops assigned an undercover agent to nab her red-handed, and a sting operation was designed to achieve it. The officer in plain clothes contacted the woman and requested BD100 of shabu and agreed to meet her in Hoora on February 21.

The accused completed

the transaction and police followed her to her apartment, which was raided by policewomen who found

four sachets of shabu inside a table.

The accused, however, refused to admit selling drugs, but admitted to consumption.

She claimed that she was requested by a friend to go and meet the agent to buy drugs from him.

But her claims were refuted because police caught her in possession of the money which was given to her by the officer during the transaction.

A number of cases were discussed at the Indian

Embassy open house yesterday including that of an 18-year-old student who is struggling to complete his education because of issues related to nationality.

Speaking about the case, Indian Ambassador Alok Kumar Sinha explained that the student’s parents never placed a nationality request for him. “He doesn’t have any nationality yet, he is 18 years old and the registration for citizenship is still not done. There were many cases like these, some were sorted out. When there are cases where mother and father are Indian, it is a bit easier to sort out. But when a parent is Indian and the other parent is of another nationality, it becomes

more complicated,” he said. Addressing the ambassador and the embassy officials, the student said his school informed him that he would not be allowed to continue studying there because of his nationality issue.

The embassy assured the student that all steps will be taken to help him, including sending a letter to the school to allow him to complete his studies.

Embassy officials stressed that all Indian parents in Bahrain must apply for their child’s citizenship within one year after the child is born. “When the child is born come to register as soon as possible. One year is the limit, after that it becomes a complex issue,” an official said.

Sinha said that the open house was a fruitful one with a variety of cases being discussed.

Beijing

China yesterday abolished its official cap on interest

rates for savers and announced a further easing in monetary policy as it seeks to address slowing growth in the world’s second-largest economy.

The decision announced by the central People’s Bank of China, will allow financial institutions to offer savers a market-based rate of return for their money, introducing true

competition for capital.  The decision will bring

significantly more competition to the financial sector, which in recent years has seen property and share prices boom, only to face heightened risks.  It was accompanied by a 0.25 percentage point cut in interest rates and a 0.50 percentage point drop in the reserve requirement ratio, the amount of cash banks must keep in reserve.

The winter camping season has started on 22nd October and campers will be flocking to Sakhir and adjacent areas

especially during weekends. The five month camping season has started with many governmental authorities are managing and monitoring the camping activities to avoid occurring of any accident due to sensitivity of the area and to protect the natural environment. The camping areas have been marked and displayed for the people’s attention to book the location/ site and register their camps.

Camping is not only an outing and enjoyment but it also serve as a learning method of how to live close to the nature. Once we are enjoying the camping, we often forget and disregard the environment and mistreat it with our careless behaviour.

The authorities like previous years have devised plans and programs and are creating awareness among the campers on safety and environmental concerns through media, notices, bill boards and banners. As per the rules, the campers are required to camp at least 150 meters away from any oil and gas fields and more than 50 meters away from the electricity voltage pylons and main roads to ensure their safety. This year, officials have ambitious plans to organize awareness campaigns to combat littering menace and imposing fines on violators.

The Supreme Camping Season Committee has asked the campers to camp in the allocated areas, register their camps and obtain camping label stressing that camps that are not registered or against the rules will be removed. The campers are asked to place the label in a clear and prominent place. Placing of fencing or installing signs, poles as well as afforestation work before the start of camping season are not allowed. The committee has also urged campers to maintain their safety by providing safety equipment in tents like a fire extinguisher and a first-aid kit, not to use open fires or stoves inside tents and provide an independent venue for the kitchen.

Campers are advised not to store any flammable materials in the camp in any form. Camp should be established away from slopes, to avoid damages due to rain and floods, mountain heights, restricted areas or pipes. Campers have been asked to maintain cleanliness of the camps by collecting garbage in bags and putting them in the allocated spots for garbage collection. Burning waste during or after the end of the camping season has also been prohibited.

The committee also prohibited establishing buildings of brick or cement, putting barriers or tires in the camping sites. Barns are not allowed for any purpose. Keeping animals and hunting is also prohibited. The engagement in any action that would harm the environment and the wildlife is prohibited. It includes the destruction of trees, wild plants, levelling the ground etc.

Last year more than 3,000 camps were established. and more than 11,000 tons of garbage left behind by the campers was collected and disposed including carpets, electronics, furniture, tents, used tires, bricks, discarded utensils, portable toilets and cots during the clean-up.

The principle of green camping is “If you brought it in....you need to take it out and leave the area just as you found it.”

Let us follow some basic rules for our safety, health and environmental conservation at the camping sites.• Useminimumilluminationandelectronicgadgets.• Switchoffallelectricityappliancesandinstruments

China removes interest rate cap

Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia’s government yesterday forecast slower

growth in 2016 and announced measures to spur demand in an economy bedevilled by slumping oil prices and corruption allegations aimed at the prime minister.

Prime Minister Najib Razak offered increased handouts to the poor, tax breaks, stepped-up investment, and accelerated public infrastructure projects to help stimulate the economy and ease living costs.

Hitting back at critics of his leadership, Najib declared that Malaysia was “not a failed state or bankrupt nation”, as he presented the country’s 2016 budget in parliament on Friday.

He forecast economic growth of 4.0 to 5.0 per cent in 2016, down from an expected 4.5-5.5pc this year.

Although growth remains relatively strong -- 4.9pc in the second quarter -- global economic uncertainty and

depressed oil prices have clouded the future.

“In reality, Malaysia is not a failed or bankrupt nation, but

one which is stable with strong economic fundamentals and remains competitive,” Najib said. Najib also defended an unpopular consumption tax introduced earlier this year, which he said had helped cushion a reduction in revenue caused by slower oil earnings.

The economy has also been hit by the uncertainty posed by a huge financial scandal implicating Najib.

Washington

US President Barack Obama vetoed a $612

billion defence spending bill Thursday, saying it prevented the closure of Guantanamo Bay prison and wasted money on unwanted programmes.

Making a rare public show of rejecting a law, Obama said the text agreed by the Republican-controlled Congress “falls woefully short” in key areas.

Obama said the bill did “a number of good things,” including reforming military retirement and funding cyber security, but “resorts to gimmicks” and funded unwanted programmes.

He zeroed in on provisions that would restrict the transfer of prisoners from Guantanamo Bay on the tip of Cuba, to the UnitedStates.

“This legislation specifically impedes our ability to close Guantanamo,” he said.

“Guantanamo is one of the premier mechanisms for jihadists to recruit, it is time for us to close it. It’s outdated, it’s expensive.”

After embarrassing false starts, Obama is making a final

push to close Guantanamo prison. But to fulfil that glaringly incomplete campaign promise he faces unpalatable compromises and internal resistance.

But the fate of those deemed too dangerous to release -- but too difficult to prosecute -- has stymied his efforts.

The administration is looking at military facilities like Fort Leavenworth, Kansas or the Navy Brig in Charleston, South Carolina as possible

destinations for inmates. But Congress wants to have

control of any transfer and to ensure that prisoners do not have full rights afforded to American civilians.

The American Civil Liberties Union, whichhas campaignedfor the prison’s closure, welcomed the move.

“The president clearly did the right thing by rejecting the bill’s restrictions on transferring Guantanamo prisoners who have been locked up without

charge or trial for years on end,” said executive director Anthony Romero.

“Now Congress needs to send back the president a bill that will let him close Guantanamo and end indefinite detention, and he needs to take decisive action to make his promise to close the prison a reality.

“He needs to do this soon, before his legacy is irreparably tarnished by the stain of Guantanamo.”

Obama also said the budget “prevents a wide range of reforms that are necessary for us to get our military modernized.”

“We have repeatedly put forward a series of reforms eliminating reforms that the Pentagon does not want, Congress keeps stuffing ‘em  back in,” he said.

“We end up wasting money, we end up diverting resources from things that we do need.”

House Speaker John Boehner instantly lambasted Obama as “placing domestic politics ahead of our troops.”

He added: “President Obama has put America’s national security at risk.”

GCC- Singapore FTA Past, Present, Future In the 1700s, famous economist Adam Smith taught us that

countries should find out what they can produce more efficiently than others (which really means cheaper, better and faster), and then specialize in what they do best while trading with other countries who are also doing what they are best at. This theory of Absolute Advantage, as easy and simple as it may sound, has been repudiated in subsequent years as being too narrow and unrealistic. However, GCC- Singapore FTA (GSFTA) implementation phase starting September 1, 2013 could be a great illustration of mutual gains from trade when examined within a simplistic framework.

Asia has, no doubt, attracted GCC attention in recent years due to its rapid growth and increasing GCC exports to the region. GCC has exported primarily petroleum and petroleum based products to Singapore and with fast and booming growth in Asian markets, it is no wonder that GCC has taken special care to boost its relation with Singapore through the FTA. Singapore, on the other hand, welcomed the agreement due to its growing demand for petroleum and petroleum related products. Further, Singapore saw this as a great opportunity to increase its footprint in GCC through exports of goods and services. It seems that the gains from trade mutually derived by GCC and Singapore are clear and straightforward, following the traditional economic theories of Absolute Advantage.

99% of Singaporean exports into the GCC are free from tariffs, providing Singaporean businesses a competitive edge in GCC markets. Key sectors benefitting include telecommunication, electrical and electronic equipment, jewellery, machinery and iron and steel-related industry. Singaporean halal products are treated at par with domestic halal products in GCC giving it a further push in its competiveness strength. Customs duties are eliminated for certain products since FTA implementation in 2013, with a few to be phased over 5 years from the start of the implementation. Singapore granted zero tariffs for all GCC imports with immediate effect post September 1, 2013.

GSFTA follows trade in services according to the WTO GATS (General Agreement in Trade and Services). All GCC countries have stretched their foreign equity participation to 100% in specific sectors except Oman which has a 70% limit across all sectors for citizens, permanent residents, local companies and MNCs based out of Singapore. Investment Guarantee Agreements (IGAs) have been granted by Singapore to all but one (Qatar, which is in negotiation stage) GCC states to ease the flow of cross border investments.

Some noteworthy projects completed between Singapore and GCC are Fraser Serviced Residences opening a $225 million development, that integrated Seef Mall and 91 apartments in 2010 in Bahrain; Bank Muscat setting up a representative office in Singapore in October 2011; Agility Logistics of Kuwait, with a staff size of over 600 in Singapore, with an estimated value of US$39 million; Qatari DIAR purchasing a 40% majority stake of Singapore’s Raffles Hotel (worth US$275 million) in 2009.

It will be worth watching for more trade data across GCC-Singapore to conclude the story of mutually beneficial trade in post FTA era.

An exceptionally rare watch worn by an American

astronaut on the Moon has sold for more than $1.6 million, a US auction house said yesterday.

Dave Scott, the commander of the Apollo 15 mission to the Moon in 1971, wore the Bulova Chronograph watch on his third lunar walk after his standard-issue Swiss Omega

became damaged. It is the only watch worn on the Moon in private hands and was bought by a Florida businessman in a frenetic, 12-minute bidding war with a rival in Britain, said Boston-based RR Auction.

It is also the only American-made watch ever worn on the Moon, and sold for $1,625,000 -- smashing the auction house’s pre-sale estimates of $750,000 to $1 million. But

after his second moonwalk, Scott noticed that the crystal

of his Omega popped off when he returned to the cabin, so he strapped on his personal backup watch, the Bulova.

“Among the decisions I made, the monitoring of time was perhaps most important,”  82-year-old Scott stated in a detailed five-page letter that accompanied the sale. Apollo 15’s third lunar excursion lasted four hours, 49 minutes and 50 seconds.

A German court yesterday issued an interim

injunction allowing Etihad to operate codeshare flights with Air Berlin until November 8, after the Abu Dhabi-based airline filed a legal challenge against the German government on the issue.

Etihad had earlier Friday filed a request for a “provisional injunction to protect its codeshare flights with Air Berlin” after the German government failed to give it a timely decision on whether it could fly codeshare with Air Berlin for certain destinations.

The airline said it could no longer wait for the government’s decision because the coming winter plane schedule is about to take effect on Sunday, running until next March, it said. Many “passengers have already booked their tickets,” said the airline, adding that it “has no option other than to

file a request for an injunction at the administrative court of Brunswick.”

Some 29 destinations in Europe, the United States and the United Arab Emirates are affected by the issue.

Late Friday, the court allowed the codeshare flights to be operated until November 8, the airline said.

The ruling “offers both parties the opportunity to resolve differences,” Etihad said.

The German Transport Ministry said Friday that Etihad had requested 83 codeshare flights, of these 52 are covered by a treaty between Germany and the United Arab Emirates.

Another 31 are not covered but the airline will have until mid-January to make any required changes to its flight organisation.

Etihad holds a 29 per cent stake in Air Berlin, and is its biggest shareholder.

Hpakant

Everyday rickety homes in a remote Myanmar village

inch closer to a cliff edge as bulldozers owned by the nation’s elite claw the earth beneath them, ravenously hunting jade to feed China’s multi-billion dollar demand.

“That’s our space. Now they’re entering through the places where we live,” said Daw Kareen, pointing at a water-filled ravine in the jade mining area of Hpakant in northern Kachin state.

The houses precariously perched alongside sometimes collapse, added the 44-year-old, in an area where local protests have long gone unheard by authorities in the “grip” of mining firms.

Secluded Hpakant, encircled by raging ethnic war, is a treasure trove for Myanmar’s wealthiest, who monopolise the world’s primary supply of a stone that has almost mystical reverence in China.

Jade was the preserve of the

military under junta rule and despite a fanfare of reforms, a new government dominated by former generals has maintained secrecy around the industry since coming to power in 2011.

In the months ahead of key November elections, likely to be swept by Aung San Suu Kyi’s opposition party, locals report an accelerating frenzy of environmental destruction

as firms dynamite hills and gouge deeper into the earth.

Fears of vast corruption centre on the discrepancy between official Myanmar jade sales and recorded Chinese precious stone imports from the country, which last year amounted to $3.4 billion and $12bn respectively.

But in a new report published Friday advocacy group Global Witness estimates the value of jade produced in 2014 was actually far greater at $31bn -- nearly half of impoverished Myanmar’s GDP.

It says most of the profits are going to powerful military and ex-junta figures as the best jade is smuggled directly into China across the border near Hpakant.

‘Hell on earth’Once cloaked by dense jungle, the area is now ringed by naked hills, exposing it to frequent monsoon landslides and a ferocious tropical sun.

Local activists say dozens

of miners have died in recent months on unsteady mounds of rubble left by mechanised diggers, or falling to their deaths on illicit nighttime jade hunts on the sheer cliffs.

“It is hell on earth -- have no illusions,” said an aid worker with knowledge of the region who asked not to be named.

Abundant heroin is commonly used to dull pain

and hunger during long day shifts.  But Hpakant is also a place of legendary promise, where everyone knows someone who made their fortune.  Thein Zaw Win was driven to the wild northern frontier by money problems at his family farm in central Monywa three years ago.

But the 20-year-old has sent $4,000 a year home from scouring the waste rubble.

“If I dig everyday in this hole I hope someday I’ll get rich,” he said, carrying a chunk of jade he had just found.

‘Stone of heaven’ Praised by Confucius as a symbol of virtue and known as the “stone of heaven”, jade has been prized in China for centuries.

Nephrite, often a milky peppermint, has long been mined in China, but it is the translucent green jadeite, or “imperial jade”, that is most sought after -- and almost all the world’s supply comes from Hpakant.

While evaluating a chunk of gold is a simple matter of carats and ounces, jade prices are judged on a multitude of subtle variations of shade, lustre and the craftsmanship

with which it has been carved. “A bracelet can be $5 or

$5 million,” said a Myitkyina businessman, asking not to be named.    In glitzy shops in Hong Kong and China, monied consumers can select from an array of jade jewellery and ornaments -- ranging from the colour of kingfisher wings to “mutton fat” cream.

“The younger generation want to have a pair of jadeite earrings or a necklace,” said Vickie Sek, Asia head of jewellery for Christie’s in Hong Kong. But she added the highest quality Myanmar jadeite is becoming rarer. In Kachin locals fear they are losing a crucial natural

resource. The Myitkyina businessman

said bigger machines were now being used to remove the jade as quickly as possible, estimating at least 70 per cent of the best quality stones are smuggled over the border.

“In 50 years we’ll be visiting our jade in China,” he said.

Global Witness has linked the trade to Myanmar’s military, cronies and drug barons, and says it fuels Kachin’s bloody conflict.

It wants jade to undergo the same transparency reforms that swept the oil and gas industry as part of a bid to join the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, an

international scheme ensuring ordinary people share the rewards of a country’s natural bounty. “You have to question a reform process that misses the most valuable industry in the country,” said Juman Kubba of Global Witness.

In her recent Kachin election tour, Suu Kyi did not visit Hpakant or refer directly to jade, but her promise of clean government drew cheers in the state.

“I really want a government that cares about us,” said Daw Kareen, a widow who supports two children. But she fears “if the same people (rule) as in the old times, there won’t be any changes”. (AFP)

Jay-Z has won a copyright infringement case for his 1999 hit single ‘Big Pimpin’,

which was accused of using Egyptian composer, Baligh Hamdi’s 1957 track Khosara Khosara’s Arabic melodies.

The US district judge Christina Snyder dismissed the lawsuit against the 45-year-old American rapper and his producer Timbaland before it went to a jury at a federal court in Los Angeles on Wednesday, ruling that the heir of an Egyptian composer lacked the right to pursue a copyright infringement claim, the Guardian reported.

Osama Fahmy, nephew of Hamdi, filed the lawsuit against the singer claiming that the singer and his producer didn’t have the late Egyptian composer’s permission to sample the song’s flute notes.

Also, Fahmy lacked standing to pursue his claim, so, it will not be necessary to submit to the jury whether ‘ Big Pimpin’ infringed ‘Khosara Khosara’.

Tom Cruise

You might think that Tom Cruise’s hobby would be driving fast cars or

motorcycles given his status as an action movie star. But apparently he finds his inspiration from another type of action movie in which he starred, The Last Samurai. Tom Cruise is apparently a keen fencer, a skill he picked up while learning to sword fight for the film, and one that he even taught soccer star David Beckham. Rumour has it that Beckham and Cruise often practice fencing together.

Kate Beckinsale

Kate Beckinsale of Underworld fame has a

hobby that isn’t strange in and of itself, but might seem odd given her occupation. Beckinsale is said to be a keen writer, which is hardly surprising since she studied French and Russian literature while a student at Oxford. But it is surprising that someone who spends so much of her time reciting, directing, and dealing with writing would want to go home and write in her spare time.

Johnny Depp

Everyone knows that Johnny Depp is a

bit on the odd side. But Depp’s odd hobby is odd even for him. It is said that Johnny Depp owns dozens of limited edition Barbies. That’s right, rock star pirate-playing Johnny Depp collects Barbie dolls.

He’s also got dolls based on Beyonce and Destiny’s Child, Elvis and even Donny Osmond.

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods, a champion golfer, is well known for his nice cars, beautiful home, and outstanding

golfing abilities. Tiger Woods is apparently very keen on spear fishing, which you might imagine would help his aim and perhaps add something to his golfing game, not that he is in want of help in that area.

Tyra Banks

For someone as beautiful as Tyra Banks whose life is so involved in

beauty and fashion, it might not be a surprise that her love of brushes extends well beyond the makeup chair. Tyra Banks spends her spare time painting and roller blading which she has demonstrated on more than one occasion on TV. Painting is fairly low risk so there’s probably no agent hiding brushes and canvas, but roller blading for a top model might just get the agent pulling at hair.

in your financial situation could have your mind buzzing over possibilities for the future. You might be a bit worried about being able to make the most of this break, but your practicality should enable you to face it objectively and efficiently.

Breaking silence!

Kerry effect?

Al Aqsa age barrier liftedJerusalem

Israel lifted age restrictions for the main weekly prayers at Jerusalem’s

flashpoint Al Aqsa mosque compound yesterday, in an apparent bid to ease tensions over the site that sparked a surge in Israel-Palestinian violence.

The decision, which allows all Muslim worshippers to attend Friday prayers, comes as Israel faces growing international pressure to defuse a crisis which many fear heralds a new Palestinian intifada, or uprising.

The Middle East peacemaking Quartet -- US Secretary of State John Kerry, his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and UN chief Ban Ki-moon -- were to hold talks on the escalating violence later Friday.

The increasing diplomatic efforts came as Palestinian political parties called for a “day of rage” with protests to be held after Friday prayers in Gaza and the West Bank.

Hamas, the Islamist movement which rules the Gaza Strip, called in a statement for “more protests and more clashes with soldiers in the West Bank”.

Thousands of worshippers streamed into the Al Aqsa mosque compound ahead of prayers, many of whom had not been allowed in on a Friday since mid-September when clashes broke out

at the site between Palestinians and Israeli police.

“Of course it is better but there are still checkpoints and searches. There

is still no respect,” said Wissam Abu Madi, 20, who said he believed a wave of attacks on Israelis would continue.

France crash kills 42Puisseguin

At least 42 people were killed when a coach carrying elderly

day-trippers collided with a lorry and burst into flames in southwest France yesterday, in the country’s worst road accident for three decades.

The coach was carrying a club of pensioners on an excursion when it collided with the lorry near the village of Puisseguin among the vineyards of the St Emilion region, east of Bordeaux.

Many of the victims were thought to have died in the fire, according to emergency workers and local authorities.

Images shown on French television showed the coach had been completely burned, leaving only a charred shell.

“The driver of the lorry appears to have lost control of his vehicle, leaving him stranded in the middle of

the road. The bus driver was unable to avoid the accident,” Puisseguin mayor Xavier Sublett told reporters.

Locals saw a plume of smoke from several kilometres away.

Many said that part of the road was known to be particularly dangerous.

The lorry driver was killed. The rest of the victims were passengers on the coach, officials said.

Eight people, including the coach driver, managed to escape the burning wreckage -- four of whom were seriously injured, according to a local official. “The bus driver was lightly injured. He had the presence of mind to open the doors to allow as many passengers as possible to leave the bus,” said Sublett.

The crash is the deadliest in France since August 1982, when 53 people including 44 children were killed in a motorway pile-up.

Some 20 fire engines and 60 firefighters were dispatched to the scene on Friday, supported by helicopters. A trauma counselling unit and an information hotline were also set up.

‘An incredible tragedy’ The coach, carrying 49 passengers

and a driver, departed early Friday from Petit-Palais-Cornemps, a village of 650 residents near the scene of the accident.

Pierre Henri-Brandet, spokesman for the interior ministry, told BFMTV that four people “were extremely severely injured” -- two with burns and two with head injuries.

Henri-Brandet said the accident happened just a few minutes after the bus had set off.

“We are very affected because all

the people on the bus came from the villages in the area,” said Jacque Deval, whose brother-in-law and sister-in-law were among the injured.

“My mother and my father-in-law were on the bus. I have just arrived, I don’t have any news for the moment,

but I’m very scared that they will be on the list of victims,” said Delphine Guerineau.

The group had been heading south to the nearby region of Landes to visit a facility specialising in Bayonne ham, a local delicacy. (AFP)

Israel court halts razing of homes

Woman ‘set on fire for refusing proposal’

Jerusalem

Israel’s High Court has issued injunctions blocking the

demolition of six West Bank homes belonging to Palestinians accused of killing Israelis. The army had been set Thursday to demolish the homes of the alleged Palestinian killers of two Israelis shot in the occupied West Bank on October 1, as well as those accused of murdering two Israelis in June.

But following petitions by family members and neighbours, the court issued “temporary orders” preventing the structures from being demolished or confiscated.

Multan

A  young Pakistani woman was recovering in hospital

yesterday after she was burned over nearly half her body by a man she had refused to marry, police said. Sonia Bibi, 20, told police from her hospital bed that her former lover Latif Ahmed sprinkled her with petrol and set her alight after she turned down his proposal.

A doctor in Multan’s main Nishtar hospital confirmed that 45 to 50 per cent of Bibi’s body had been burnt in the attack, but said she was out of danger.

The incident took place in a remote village of Multan district in central Punjab province, and police have arrested the 24-year-old Ahmed.

“The girl told us that she was in love with Latif, whom she accused of dousing her in gasoline and setting her alight,” Hayat said. Police have launched a probe, he said, but preliminary investigations suggested Latif had set Bibi on fire “after she refused to marry him”.

Howler monkeys are back in Rio after a centuryRio de Janeiro

Scientists have given Rio de Janeiro something to shout

about with the reintroduction of howler monkeys to the city’s famed Tijuca forest after a century’s absence.

Tijuca, a thick forest rising up to the towering Corcovado and statue of Christ the Redeemer, is one of the world’s largest urban woodlands. But environmental degradation has stripped the area of its fauna.

Now, Brazilian scientists are

working to bring those riches back, including by releasing native howler monkeys, properly know as Alouattas.

“The howlers disappeared more than 100 years ago. We decided to reintroduce them because it is a resistant species. They essentially eat leaves and fruits, so they are relatively easy to reintroduce,” said Fernando Fernandez, a scientist with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

The first five monkeys were

released in early September, a key moment in the programme which has been in the works since 2010.

And the creatures are more than just a pretty -- or furry -- face. In addition to filling the silent forest with their trademark cries, the monkeys’ excrement, pushed around by dung beetles, helps fertilise soil and trees.

That’s important because the authorities also want to save the endangered Atlantic forest, which once covered the Brazilian

coast but today is reduced to about seven percent of what European explorers would have found 500 years ago.

In Rio, the Tijuca forest covers 39.5 square kilometers and has been preserved despite being just minutes from neighbourhoods of the teeming city which will host next year’s Olympics. Tijuca administrator Enresto Vivero de Castro says the area can become “a laboratory for the rebuilding of the fauna that could work for other parts of the world.” (AFP)

Crocs sleep with one eye openSydney

Saltwater crocodiles can rest with one eye open to

watch for threats, Australian scientists said yesterday, with further research likely to show half of the mammal’s brain could be conscious even while asleep.

The scientists found that crocodiles -- like birds, their closest living relatives -- engaged in “unilateral eye closure” during hostile situations. “Birds like to sleep like humans, with both eyes closed, but when they feel threatened they’ll have one eye open and they’ll orientate that eye towards the threat,”

lead author Michael Kelly of La Trobe University said.

“And the crocodiles were behaving in this way as well. So most of the time when they were resting, they’ll have both eyes closed, but then when we present them with a threat,

they would open one eye and they’ll keep that eye orientated towards the threat.” The study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology was conducted using three young saltwater crocodiles placed in separate tanks.

Trollhattan

A sword-wielding man who killed two people

at a Swedish school with many immigrant pupils was motivated by racism, police said yesterday, as hostility towards refugees mounts across Europe.

Investigators in the southwestern Swedish town of Trollhattan confirmed that Thursday’s school attack was

a “racially motivated” hate crime, based on the 21-year-old assailant’s “attire, his behaviour at the scene of the crimes”.

Police investigator Thor Haraldsson said the assailant targeted “those with dark complexions”.

The killer, identified in the media as Anton Lundin-Pettersson, went from classroom to classroom

at the school for six to 15-year-olds.

He killed one teacher and a student, and injured another teacher and student who both remained in hospital yesterday.

On his social media accounts, the attacker comes across as a loner fascinated by Hitler, Nazi Germany and Sweden’s far-right Sweden Democrats party, which is critical of Islam and rising immigration to Sweden.

Maiduguri

Two bomb blasts ripped through mosques in

northeast Nigeria yesterday, killing at least 55 people and injuring more than 100, as Boko Haram fighters seized a town in neighbouring Cameroon.

The attacks in Maiduguri, Yola and Kerawa again underlined the persistent

national and regional threat from the Islamist militants, despite military claims of gains.

Fears will be heightened particularly in Maiduguri, which has been hit six times this month, killing a total of 76 people, according to the latest tally.

Questions will also again be raised about how the militants are able to carry out such

attacks on a regular basis, after similar attacks in the city last month claimed 117 lives.

The bombings also demonstrated the challenges facing the United States, which last week announced the deployment of up to 300 military personnel to northern Cameroon.

The contingent will conduct surveillance and intelligence operations against Boko Haram, including within Nigeria, at a time when attacks on civilians are on the increase.

Suicide bomber  The first attack in Maiduguri happened shortly after 5:00am (0400 GMT) in the Jidari area of the Borno state capital, where Boko Haram was founded in 2002.

Umar Sani, a civilian vigilante assisting the military in the counter-insurgency, and local resident Musa Sheriff

both said there were two blasts at the mosque.

“I was involved in the evacuation. We counted 28 dead bodies apart from the two bombers, who were identifiable by the mutilation of their bodies,” said Sani.

“Over 20 other people were injured.”

Nigeria’s National

Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said only six people were killed and 17 others injured, while hospital sources put the death toll at 19.

Both Sani and Sheriff said two other people were arrested and handed over to the military for questioning after they were seen apparently celebrating following the blasts. (AFP)

Drug tunnel with railcar system found

Deep-voiced monkeysmay be ‘all talk’: study

Mexican authorities said Thursday they seized

about 10 tons of marijuana in an elaborate tunnel with a rail car system that extended well into San Diego and was designed to smuggle drugs into the US from Tijuana.

Two Mexican government security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the passage belonged to the Sinaloa drug cartel, which is run by fugitive kingpin Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman. The discovery on Wednesday marks one of the longest and more sophisticated clandestine tunnels found on the US-Mexico border.

The passage was 9 feet deep and about 2,600 feet

long — about three-quarters of that distance in Tijuana and the rest in San Diego. It was lit, ventilated and built with metal beams to prevent collapse.

It was unclear whether any drugs got through the tunnel or if it had an exit yet in the US.

Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, declined to comment.

The next time you hear a howler monkey making

A study out Thursday in the journal Current Biology found that male howler monkeys with the most powerful voices -- a trait that is useful for attracting females -- also had the smallest testicles.

For scientist Leslie Knapp, who describes the work as her “calls and balls paper,” the findings offer an intriguing look at an evolutionary tit for tat. “The idea has

been around since Charles Darwin, but this is the first time that anyone actually has demonstrated a trade-off between vocal characteristics before mating and sperm competition after mating,” said Knapp, professor and chair of anthropology at the University of Utah.

Abbas Abubaker then notched Bahrain’s second medal with a silver in the men’s 400m race in 64.72 seconds. Saudi Arabia’s Yousef Masrahi (45.57) bagged the gold, while the bronze went to Ahmed Mubarak of Oman (47.24).

Late on, Abdulrahman Khamis also managed to get podium on the podium for the kingdom in the long jump final, with a jump of 7.60 metres to

win the competition’s bronze medal, with Saudi Arabia’s Ahmed Mohammed managing 7.59 metres to win the gold medal. Bahrain’s fourth medal

of the day came in the bowling team event where the quartet of Osama Abdulrahman, Ahmed Al Khaja, Ali Al Qaseer and Ahmed Al Awadi

Bahrain’s Table Tennis team clinched a silver and

bronze medal in the table tennis competition on Thursday at the Second GCC Games in Damman, Saudi Arabia.

In a neck-and-neck table tennis gold medal tie, Bahrain suffered a 0-3 defeat to hosts Saudi Arabia, who added another gold medal to their list at Al Ittifaq Club gym.

Rashid Khalid lost Bahrain’s first match to Abdulaziz Al Abbas, then Nayef Al Jedei doubled the Saudi advantage

with a 3-0 victory over Bahraini Mohammed Abbas and though

Anwar Makki was hoping to put Bahrain back in the tie, Ali

Al Khadrawi was too strong to win the match 3-0 and gold for Saudi Arabia.

The doubles tournament was also a tough task for Bahrain who secured bronze through Anwar Makki and Rashid Khalid who edged compatriots Mohammed Abbas and Elyas Elyasi 3-0 in the third-place tie.

Bahrain rounded off the day, taking home the handball competition silver medal as Saudi Arabia secured the gold medal thanks a 30-27 victory over Oman, who settled for the bronze.

The Saudis completed the

Colombo

Sri Lanka stretched their lead to 113 over West Indies

yesterday as they followed up a clinical bowling performance with a solid start to their second innings in a low-scoring Test in Colombo.

The opener Kaushal Silva was unbeaten on 31 and Dinesh Chandimal was not out on five as the visitors finished the second day of the final Test at the P. Sara Oval on 76-2.

Responding to their hosts’ first innings total of 200, the tourists were all out in the last ball of the afternoon session for just 163 after pace bowler Dhammika Prasad took four for 34.

And having wrested the initiative away from the tourists, Sri Lanka then drove home their advantage as debutant Kusal Mendis justified the faith of the selectors with an entertaining innings of 39.

The opener Dimuth Karunaratne was out first ball of the innings, caught by a diving

Devendra Bishoo, after flicking uppishly at a ball by Jerome Taylor, but 20-year-old Mendis showed few sign of nerves.

Hitting seven fours, Mendis

became the second wicket to fall, caught behind off Jomel Warrican with the total on 55.

Silva and Chandimal then saw out the remaining 10 overs to

leave the hosts well placed to clinch the series following their innings victory in the first Test in Colombo. None of the West Indies batsmen passed the 50

mark in their first innings, with opener Kraigg Brathwaite top-scoring with 47.

After resuming in the morning on 17-1, few of the West Indies batsmen ever looked comfortable and found runs harder to get as the day wore on -- struggling in particular to score off the miserly Rangana Herath.

Between lunch and tea, the tourists lost six wickets for the addition of 86 runs.

Prasad led the way with his four wickets but he was well backed up by Dilruwan Perera who finished with 3 for 28 while left arm spinner Milinda Siriwardana also chipped in with 2 for 26.

Play began half an hour late due to a soggy outfield caused by heavy overnight rains. Although the light was gloomy at the start, it had improved significantly by the afternoon.

The tourists have never won a Test match in Sri Lanka in 10 previous attempts.

Dubai

Joe Root took the attack to the Pakistan bowlers with

an enterprising half-century to guide England to 182-3 at close of play on the second day of the second Test in Dubai yesterday.

Root, unbeaten on 76, built the innings after England lost the key wicket of skipper Alastair Cook as they fought hard against a pace-cum-spin Pakistan attack on a Dubai stadium pitch.

With Root was Jonny Bairstow on 27 as England were 196 behind Pakistan’s first innings total of 378 with seven wickets intact.

The first Test in the three-

match series ended in a draw in Abu Dhabi last week.

Cook, who hit an epic 263 in the first Test, added 113 runs for the third wicket with

Root as the pair negotiated leg-spinner Yasir Shah and left-armer Zulfiqar Babar with confidence.

They built on the early loss

of Moeen Ali (one) and Ian Bell (four) and challenged Pakistan’s superior bowling attack.

Cook reached his 45th half-century with a flicked boundary off paceman Imran Khan before he was caught off a leg-side push off the bowling of Shah.

Cook hit 10 well-timed fours during his 117-ball stay.

Root was more aggressive, taking a single off Shah to complete 15th fifty to continue his excellent form in 2015 in which he had already passed the 1,000-run mark before this series.

Root has so far hit nine fours during his 118-ball stay.

Paceman Stuart Broad believes England can gain upper hand tomorrow.

“We are delighted as a bowling unit at getting ten wickets on a first-day pitch for under 400,” said Broad. “It was good to only lose three wickets for a decent score and tomorrow will be an important day.

Bastian Schweinsteiger, the German national captain,

is taking legal action against a Hong Kong-based company for making Nazi figurines that bear a clear resemblance to him.

A member of Schweinsteiger’s management team confirmed the legal action on Thursday, after a report in the Bild newspaper.

The company DiD had produced a Nazi-uniform-clad figurine with a face similar to Schweinsteiger’s and which is named “Bastian”.

Contacted by Bild, a company employee Patrick Chan denied

selling any figurines based on a footballer, and said it was purely coincidental that the Nazi doll resembled Schweinsteiger.

The 30-centimetre tall figurine was “based on the typical German”, he said. “We thought that all Germans look like that.”

The figurine, marketed as “WWII Army Supply Duty”, comes with several apparels -- including a version with a steel helmet, white winter jacket and woollen gloves, and another in a typical army uniform, complete with the “Wehrmachtsadler” insignia -- an eagle with a swastika above the right

breast pocket. Schweinsteiger was named captain of the German team last year after Philipp Lahm’s international retirement.

The Manchester United midfielder was a key member of the squad that won the World Cup in 2014.

The Hong Kong doll maker’s site crashed yesterday in the aftermath of the Schweinsteiger doll row.

Hong Kong-based DiD’s website was intermittently available on Friday afternoon.

The company, which also manufactures replicas of former Soviet dictator Joseph

Stalin and former British prime minister Winston Churchill, was not available for comment.

“We thought that all

Germans look like that,” company employee Patrick Chan said, adding that Bastian is a popular name in Germany.

All Blacks–Springboks Semifinal blaster today

Football legend Pele marks his diamond jubilee

Twickenham

“When South Africa plays New Zealand,

consider your country at war,” legendary Springbok prop Boy Louw once said.

It has been that way since their first Test in 1921 and that is how it will be when they meet for the 91st time in Saturday’s World Cup semi-final at Twickenham.

The Springboks against the All Blacks is one of the fiercest rivalries in rugby with street riots, Olympic boycotts, heavyweight boxers, broken bones and the advent of mouthguards all part of its history.

Louw spoke before the bitter 1949 series in South Africa which the Springboks swept 4-0 drawing complaints from the All Blacks of biased refereeing.

Rumblings of discontent continued for many series with the great Springbok centre of the 1960s, John Gainsford, later telling New Zealand: “When you come to us, we cheat you and beat you. And

when we go to you, you cheat us and beat us.”

But no amount of complaining in the days before neutral referees could sway the All Blacks and Springboks from their passionate desire to play each other.

Flour bombs The first official Test

between New Zealand and South Africa was played in Dunedin in 1921 with the All Blacks triumphant 13-5. South Africa won the second Test 9-5 and the third was drawn 0-0.

The first All Blacks tour to South Africa in 1928 also ended in a tied series, with the four-match campaign shared 2-2.

The All Blacks scrum was given a torrid time in the first two Tests leading to a recall for the retired Skinner, who was also a heavyweight boxing champion.

Skinner admitted to punching both Springbok props, Chris Koch and Jaap Bekker and the South African

aggression subsided. New Zealand went on to claim the series 3-1 and Skinner went back into retirement.

Later, several African nations boycotted the Montreal Olympics in protest as the All Blacks continued to defy anti-apartheid protests and toured South Africa in 1976.

When legal action prevented an All Black tour in 1985, 28 of the 30 players New Zealand players originally selected mounted a rebel tour of South Africa the following year.

The four internationals are still considered Tests in South Africa but are not recognised by New Zealand.

By the time rugby turned professional after the 1995 World Cup, when South Africa beat New Zealand in the final, the Springboks had won 21 of the 42 Tests played against the All Blacks with three drawn.

The tide has now turned in favour of the All Blacks who have won 34 of the 48 Tests since.

18 in 1959 in a 4-2 victory over Juventus: slipping past three defenders tapping the ball up, dodging round the keeper to touch.

Regarded by many as the greatest footballer ever, he won three World Cups, more than any other player, and was listed in the Guinness World Records for the most career goals.

Pele’s career lasted from 1956 to 1977, during which time the attacker scored 1,283 goals.

At club level he spent his career with Brazilian side Santos, where he made his debut at the age of 15 and

inspired them to 25 major titles over 18 years. He later came out of retirement to play

for the New York

Cosmos. His worldwide appeal was perhaps most strikingly demonstrated when, in 1969, a 48-hour ceasefire was called to the Nigerian civil war so combatants could watch him play a friendly in Lagos.

Even after his retirement aged 36 in 1977, with an impressible smile and good humour Pele never left the limelight. The legend e a r n e d m i l l i o n s with a s e c o n d career in ads, “but never for a l c o h o l i c drinks, politics, religion or tobacco,” he said.

Ma n c h e s t e r City manager

Manuel Pellegrini insists he has no problems with Vincent Kompany – but has given his captain no guarantees that he will be recalled for Sunday’s Premier League derby against United.

Kompany has played just two minutes for the club since defying his manager’s wishes by featuring for Belgium in a Euro 2016 qualifier against Israel.

Pellegrini did not want the centre-

back to play for his country during the last

international break, wanting him instead to spend more time recuperating from a calf injury.

K o m p a n y suffered the injury during the 2-1 Champions League home defeat against Juventus on September 15, with Nicolas Otamendi since establishing himself as Eliaquim Mangala’s regular central defensive partner.

City have not kept a clean sheet this season

without Kompany in the side, but Pellegrini has hinted that he is prepared to stick with Argentina international Otamendi alongside Mangala at Old Trafford.

Pellegrini said: “I don’t have any problem with Vincent Kompany. I will pick the starting XI I think will be best for the game.

“I’m not punishing Vincent. I have no problem in my relationship with Vincent. After five weeks without playing, you must be fit. He must be fit before he returns.”

Kompany was an unused substitute as City retained the leadership of the Premier League by beating Bournemouth 5-1 last Saturday.

He then came on for the final two minutes of stoppage time on Wednesday as Pellegrini’s side secured a late and dramatic 2-1 Champions League win over Sevilla.

Asked why he brought on Kompany for Kevin De Bruyne at that moment, Pellegrini said: “We had just scored to make it 2-1, and they were going to put a

lot of crosses in the box, so it was important he was there.

“For me, the most crucial thing is to play with the best players I have at the moment.”

Pellegrini has indicated that he feels Otamendi and Mangala are his in-form defenders going into Sunday’s meeting with Manchester United.

“I think that both of them are in a good moment, as were Vincent and Mangala at the beginning of the season,” the manager said.

Pellegrini will remain without several injured players for the trip to Old Trafford, with Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Fabian Delph, Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy all unavailable.

Top scorer Aguero will be out for at least another three weeks with the hamstring injury sustained while on international duty with Argentina earlier this month.

Nasri, who has been dogged by hamstring trouble in recent weeks, missed the win over Sevilla, and is also not expected to return for another three weeks.
