Did you know?

Music is science It is exact, specific; and it demands exact acoustics. A conductor's full score is a chart, a graph which indicates frequencies, intensities, volume changes, melody and harmony all at once and with the most exact control of time.

Music is mathematical It is rhythmically based on the subdivision of time into fractions which must be demonstrated instantaneously, not worked out on paper.

Music is a foreign language Most of the terms are in Italian, German or French; and the notation is certainly not English - but a highly developed kind of shorthand that uses symbols to represent ideas. The semantics of music is the most complete and universal language.

Music is history Music usually reflects the environment and times of its creation, often even the country and/or racial feeling.

Music is physical education It requires fantastic coordination of fingers, hands, arms, lip, cheek and facial muscles, in addition to extraordinary control of the diaphragmatic, back, stomach and chest muscles, which respond instantly to the sound the ear hears and the mind interprets.

Music is all of these things, but most of, Music is an art It allows a human being to take all these techniques and use them to create emotion. That is one thing science cannot duplicate: humanism, feeling, emotion, call it what you will.

PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME

Tonight’s program is the culmination of many hours of true dedication and effort by the fourth and fifth grade students of the Upper Moreland Intermediate School. The young people who will play for you this evening have arrived at school well before our official starting time in order to prepare for tonight’s event. These outstanding musicians are proud to display their talents and hope that you enjoy their performance. On behalf of Ms. Brann, Mrs. Pezzi-Burns, and the entire Upper Moreland Intermediate School faculty and staff, I hope that you enjoy the sights and sounds of “Music Fest II.”

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

It is our belief that music is an integral part of a complete education. It engages students in individual and group activity, promotes creativity and problem solving, and develops evaluative ability It draws from multiple disciplines and leads to an improved self-concept, broader cultural awareness, and development of life-long skills.

Upper Moreland Intermediate School’s Music program offers all students in grades four and five the opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument. In grade five, all students are given the opportunity to experience singing in a choral setting. Students discover and develop their potential through varied musical experiences in listening, performing, and creating. The program’s primary goal is to foster and promote an appreciation and understanding of music. Through a comprehensive appreciation and understanding of music, students learn how to set, strategize, and meet goals. Ultimately, it is our belief when students musically achieve it teaches them how to become compassionate, independent thinkers as well as life-long learners. Best current practices and techniques taught are regularly researched and updated which will enable students to develop the proper skills and knowledge needed for musical achievement.

Welcome to “Music Fest II.” The performers that you will see here tonight represent the hard work and dedication of the music students at Upper Moreland Intermediate School. Many of the instrumentalists that you will hear have only been playing their instrument for nineteen months. We are extremely proud of what they have accomplished in such a short amount of time. We would like to thank all of the parents and Upper Moreland Intermediate School teachers as well as the staff for their patience and unyielding support that they give these talented young individuals in their quest for musical excellence. Their achievements would not be possible without you.

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for giving us the opportunity to share one of our true passions in life; music. These young musicians, who we have tremendously enjoyed getting to know and care for, have worked hard for tonight’s performance. “They have come a long way” and we are very proud of them. We hope that you enjoy this memorable musical experience!

PMEA Elementary Festivals

Pennsylvania Music Educators Association is part of the Music Educators National Conference which is a professional organization of music teachers, administrators and music industry representatives from schools across the United States. Representation is broken into divisions, states, regions and then by districts. Upper Moreland Township School District is part of PMEA District 11. PMEA District 11 Elementary Band is an honors group comprised of outstanding nominated 5th & 6th grade instrumental music students from all the public/private schools in Bucks and Montgomery Counties. Requirements to qualify for nomination includes outstanding musical skill, outstanding work ethic, and a high degree of individual integrity. These dedicated young individuals have practiced countless additional hours on their own to prepare for this event. During the one day festival, they had the opportunity to meet and work with other musically distinguished students from the surrounding schools. They also had the opportunity to work with a distinguished guest conductor and help produce a professional DVD of the performance. This year, Upper Moreland Intermediate School had 15 fifth grade students qualify for the Band Festival. The UMIS Music Department would like to thank all of those involved who help make our music program a success. The success of our music program could not be possible without a network of such supportive teachers, parents, and community.

“Music Exchange” Band

The “Music Exchange” Band provided a special musical experience to the Wind Ensemble and select Concert Band members. Hatboro-Horsham is considered Upper Moreland’s “rival” school district. This rivalry is especially recognized during the month of November with the traditional Bears vs. Hatters Thanksgiving football game. The elementary instrumental music departments in Upper Moreland and Hatboro-Horsham brainstormed the concept of “cross community” collaboration through music. The elementary students of Upper Moreland and Hatboro-Horsham met, became acquainted, worked together, and showcased musical unity. Students are applying and sharing musical skills and appreciation. It is the music department’s vision that through this experience, students will realize that learned musical skills, commitment, and appreciation have no boundaries. The Upper Moreland Intermediate School Wind Ensemble and Hatboro-Horsham Band performed at Hatboro-Horsham’s 5th Grade Band Night. The group will unite and perform at June Fete Village Fair on June 8th. It is an honor to have the opportunity to share our love of music with our “good neighbor” school district!

GOT MUSIC?

Famous people Who used to or still play an instrument…

Tribute Mrs. Mary Ann Meinhart

Mrs. Mary Ann Meinhart was raised in Willow Grove, PA, and is a true product of the Upper Moreland School District. Upon graduating from Upper Moreland High School, she embarked on a lifelong journey to share her love of music with others. Mrs. Meinhart graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Music Education from Penn State University, and was hired to teach music for the Upper Moreland Township School District soon after. Her influence has extended to students of all ages during her 37 years spent teaching instrumental and general music at the elementary, junior, and senior high levels. She paused only to take a hiatus during which she simultaneously raised a child and received her Master’s Degree. In addition to sharing her love of music through teaching, Mrs. Meinhart is also a talented pianist and acts as an accompanist both in and out of the school district. She has successfully raised three kids, and is a proud Grandma to a newborn baby boy. Mrs. Meinhart has unselfishly shared her love for music with her students and colleagues. For 37 years Mrs. Meinhart has influenced the lives of thousands young individuals with her patient support, gentle spirit, and leadership both in and out of the music program. Because “Music Fest II” is the last concert in Upper Moreland’s calendar, it is only appropriate to pay tribute for all of her years of service and dedication. The Music Department and the Upper Moreland Township School District as a whole wish to recognize and thank Mrs. Mary Ann Meinhart for sharing her amazing talents with this community, and dedicates this concert to her.
