Friday 5 th October 2018 Well, well, well… We felt very lucky last week, as Buryfields’ children were invited to visit the house across the road from us to see their amazing well. The house is currently under extensive renovation and we were very fortunate to be able to visit one of their amazing discoveries their very own well in the kitchen! The well is 34 metres deep and has been beautifully restored to make an amazing feature in their kitchen. They have placed a thick sheet of glass over the top and have added lights inside the well walls to show of not only the enormity of the depth of the well but also how stunning and striking it is to look down. They are even hoping to be able to make use of the water in the well within the house! The children (well, most of them!) loved looking down the well with the viewing lid firmly in place! although it did make some of us feel a bit wobbly in the legs! There is also a nook in the old kitchen fireplace, dated 1762, and the children loved seeing where a previous owner has used the inner ledge to sit on. If only walls could talk and tell us some more about the amazing history! Celebration Assemblies Normal crèche services resume! If you are attending our celebration assembly on a Friday, you are very welcome to drop off younger siblings into the library so that you can watch your child receive their award or smiley in peace! It is such a special occasion for our little people to be up for an award and the crèche provides all parents with the opportunity to enjoy watching and listening to all the lovely things we have to say about them. The crèche is run by our lovely teaching assistants and all concerned have a great time – both children and adults!

Library Help Needed If you are able to spare half an hour a week to help Mrs Newman keep the books all neat and tidy, please let the office know.

Deployment Club This week the children wanted to make their dolls sleeping bags – very sensible with the colder weather approaching! We continue to be very grateful to our wonderful Linda who knits these amazing dolls – often at very short notice! A letter about deployment club has gone to all of our service families, but as mentioned, the club is open to any child who has a parent who is away for a time. If you would like your child to come along please speak with your class teacher, Miss English or one of the office team.

Doctor’s Parking Space We have been made aware that some parents are parking in the space reserved for the doctor on the lane. By doing so it means that the doctor in the house opposite the space is unable to either return home or leave – potentially to a patient urgently. We ask that this reserved space is respected by all. Thank you.

Class Web Pages Each class has their own page on the school website which has photos and updates of what the children have been doing. These can be found under the ‘Buryfields Classes’ tab on the home page.

Curriculum Meeting Thank you to all those who came along to our KS1 curriculum meeting on Wednesday – we hope it was fun and informative! We had a really lovely time and it was great for us to have a chance to chat about the techniques we use to teach the children, to explain about why we do some of the things we do and to share some ideas about what you can do to help at home. We are very conscious that some parents were not able to come, and also that coming along to these sorts of things are not everyone’s cup of tea! However, we would still love to chat to you about what we are teaching in English and maths and we would be more than happy to go through it with you one afternoon after school on a one-to-one basis. If you were not able to come along, please speak with your class teacher if you can. The resources can be found on the school website; please click here to find them.

PTA News Thank you to all who attended our first PTA meeting, I hope you found it informative and enlightening. Our next meeting will be at 7.45pm on Thursday 1st November again in the nook at the Bel and Dragon – and don’t forget they kindly offer us a 10% discount during our meetings! If you aren’t able to make the meeting, or if you have any ideas for the PTA, please email me at [email protected]

I can’t quite believe it is this time already but the order forms for the IQ cards went out in book bags last week. This is a great opportunity for your child/ren to design their own card, postcard, gift label or wrapping paper. The cards are perfect for Christmas cards as well as thank you cards, you could also collect an extra order form or two from the office and get your child to design

birthday cards or non-festive thank you cards that can be used throughout the year too. Let your child/ren design and draw a picture on the back of the order form (1cm in from the edge) and follow the instructions carefully on the order form. There are plenty of order forms in the office so please do not photocopy it as it won’t process properly. Please return your order forms by 12th October to avoid any disappointment. The end result is very high quality and such a special thing for the children to do as well as raising much needed funds for the school.

If your child is In Year 1 or 2 they are invited to the School disco on Wednesday 17th October from 5-6pm. The cost will only be £3 per child, which includes a drink and a bag of crisps, and is such great fun. Flyers have gone out in book bags today, please make sure you return your booking slip ASAP. If you feel you would like to volunteer on the night, please speak to your class rep (listed below).

This year, each year group will be responsible for a cake sale. The first cake sale will be hosted by Year 2 at pick up on the last day of term (19th Oct). Don’t forget to bring some pennies to support them and buy a cake or two!

This year Buryfields and Mayhill will be sharing a stall at the Odiham Extravaganza on Saturday 24th November. If you feel you can spare half an hour to help on the stall, please let your class rep know ASAP or contact [email protected]. All help is greatly appreciated and the stall helps raise funds for our lovely school.

INVICTUS GAMES EXCITEMENT!

This half term one of our families is off on a very exciting journey. The Collins Family are heading to Sydney, Australia, to support Mum, Jenny, when she competes in the Invictus Games! The Invictus Games is an international adaptive multi-sport event, created by Prince Harry, in which wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and veterans take part in sports including wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, and indoor rowing. Named after Invictus, Latin for "unconquered" or "undefeated", the event was inspired by the Warrior Games, a similar event held in the United States. Prince Harry saw how the power of sport could help wounded servicemen and women in their recovery - physically, psychologically and socially. In previous years, the Games have been held in London, Orlando and Toronto – this year it will be Sydney from 20 – 27 October. The UK is sending a team of 72 athletes that were selected from over 1200 that initially registered their interest. The Games are sponsored by companies such as Jaguar Landrover, with charities such as Help for Heroes and the Royal British Legion funding the athletes and their families. This year SuperDry is the UK team’s kit sponsor. Jenny will be competing in Archery and Indoor Rowing. It is hoped that the BBC will be covering some of the Games on prime time TV and the Red Button. If you would like to follow Jenny and the team’s progress you can do so here: https://www.invictusgames2018.org To find out more about the UK team and their stories, follow this link: https://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/news/2018/may/invictus-games-2018-team-uk-announced/

We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge Buryfields congratulations to Flt Lt Collins, Evans mum (Horse Chestnut) and wish her the very best of luck from all of the staff and pupils at Buryfields and we look forward to hearing all about it on your return.
