There are 47 titles released so far. In the first series, consisting of the first 28 books, Morgan le Fay sends Jack and Annie, two normal children from Frog Creek, Pennsylvania, on numerous adventures and missions with a magical tree house in order to help free Morgan from a spell, solve four ancient riddles to become Master Librarians, and save four ancient stories from being lost forever. After the twenty-eighth chapter book, Mary Pope Osborne started a second series called the Magic Tree House "Merlin Missions". In these missions, Jack and Annie have quests from the ancient wizard Merlin the Magician. These books are longer than the previous 28, and some take place in fantasy realms like Camelot. Mary Pope Osborne, author of the Magic Tree House series

her dog,Bailey

BIOGRAPHYMary Pope Osborne grew up in the military, and by the time she was fifteen had

lived in Oklahoma, Austria, Florida and four different army posts in Virginia and North Carolina. She was born in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, as the daughter of William Pope, a United States Army Colonel, and Barnette, a homemaker. Osborne has a twin brother, Bill, a younger brother, and an older sister, Natalie, who has collaborated with her. Until she was 15, Osborne's family relocated often for her father's career.

After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the early 1970's, Mary traveled all over Europe, and spent the first six weeks of her trip living in a cave on the island of Crete. She then joined up with a group of European young people and traveled in rickety vans through sixteen Asian countries, including Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal.

She was an acting teacher, a waitress, a travel agent, a window dresser, and a medical assistant--all before becoming an author! Now she is the author of many highly acclaimed picture books, early chapter books, middle-grade biographies, and young adult novels.

In February 1993, Mary was elected the 27th president of the Author's Guild, the oldest, most established organization for writers in the United States.

Mary and her husband Will, split their time between living in an apartment in Greenwich Village, New York and a cabin in Pennsylvania. They own a terrier named Bailey, who sleeps on the top of Mary's desk every day while she writes!

Why did she write Magic Tree House books? She is sharing her imagination. Initially, she was approached by Random House to create a series about some children who went to different places and times. Not wanting to be tied down the same old story line she balked at the idea, but with some encouragement and six attempts at books you have never read she and her husband came upon a dilapidated old tree house during their travels together and the rest is history as they say.
