Yarn Options If you decide to use a different weight yarn to that as specified above, the Diamonds & Lace Poncho will not be the same size as the sample made in this pattern. Please ensure that you are using the correct weight yarn before starting. This, together with gauge, is very important. If you are unsure of what weight your yarn is, please check the label for the meterage/yardage. The yarn should be approximately 295m / 322 yards per 100g ball. You may use any brand of yarn if it meets the meterage/yardage requirements specified.

Hook Size Size 4mm and 5mm

The 4mm hook will be used for the entire poncho, except for the neck/cowl which will be worked on a 5mm hook. We are using ribbing for the neckline. Going up a full hook size will ensure a nice drape for your neck/cowl.

If you have a loose tension, it is recommended that you adjust your hook sizes down from the recommended sizes in this pattern, to obtain the correct gauge.

If you have a particularly tight tension, you should adjust your hook sizes up to obtain the correct gauge.

Gauge

Gauge (tension) is very important when making a garment. It is essential that you make a swatch using sc before starting the pattern. Gauge worked in sc and measured over 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches) must be: 20 rows x 17 sts If you are finding it difficult to achieve the correct height, but your width is correct, then please Google “Crochet Golden Loop”. You will find several video tutorials which will assist you to easily understand why this is happening and how to adjust your crochet technique to achieve the correct gauge.

Difficulty

I have given this pattern an easy rating. With the assistance of the video tutorials, I believe that even beginners would be able to easily complete the project, however, you would need to have basic crochet skills, as this is not a “how to crochet” project.

Inspiration Most of the inspiration came from many, many years of crafting with crochet. I thank my late “Ouma” – Gertie Kaltenbrunn, and my mother, Beryl Kaltenbrunn for their tuition over the years. My granddaughter Neave Weston inspired me to start to design and document my work. This pattern is dedicated to them.
