DIAC MEE
It is with great pleasure that I extend my warmest greetings to all
those taking part in the 2011 Pacific Dental Conference in Vancouver, hosted by
the Dental Industry Association of Canada (DIAC).
This event gives dentists in all specialties an excellent forum in
which to exchange information about the newest developments in the field and
provides unsurpassed opportunities for networking with peers. I am certain that
delegates will benefit from the many workshops, presentations and exhibits
planned for the next three days, and that they will leave the confe
rence inspired to
put what they have learned intopractice.
I would like to commend the Dental Industry Association of
Canada for their hard work in putting together a stimulating program for
everyone involved and for their commitment to providing the highest stan
dard of
service to the dental industry inCanada.
Please accept my best wishes for a productive and enjoyable
conference.

Greetings from DIAC president
Jamie Matera
THROUGHOUT JAMIE MATERA’S CAREER providing dental laboratoryservices to the dental profession, he has always believed in givingback to an industry that has treated him so well. That is the reasonwhy he initially became involved in the Dental Industry Associationof Canada (DIAC).
“What I value about DIAC is that it provides a multi-dimen-sional viewpoint from a cooperative contribution of manufactures, distributors, laboratory technicians, and service provider representa-tives—committed to the highest standards of service to dental pro-fessionals in Canada,” says Matera, president of Central DentalLaboratories, a full service dental laboratory in Toronto. He is alsoserving as president of DIAC.
“I truly enjoy what I do, and appreciate the ingenuity of thetechnicians I work with, and the renewed expectation of the dentistswe serve and their patients.”
Technology is fundamentally changing the way suppliers to thedental industry manufacture and deliver their services, and it has alsocreated more challenges and opportunities. “That is exciting,” Materasays.
“As technologists, we will be called upon to redefine ourselvesin the values we can bring to a dental practice by becoming thesource of knowledge transfer in the understanding, evaluation, andintegration of these emerging technologies,” Matera told DENTAL
CHRONICLE, which recently partnered with DIAC to produce fourdental meeting guides in 2011.
“I see DENTAL CHRONICLE as a highly respected partner in thesuccess of DIAC and getting our message and purpose acrossCanada. It is vital that everyone participating in the dental professionbe made aware of the issues that affect how we will do business inthe future. Of equal importance, is the understanding that DIACprovides the forum for such discussion,” he said.

Welcome to the Pacific DentalConference from DIAC’s
Dianne GrassieDURING THE PAST FIVE YEARS, Dianne Grassie has been responsiblefor managing the Dental Industry Association of Canada’s (DIAC)convention portfolio.
“My main responsibility is to work with the convention organiz-ers to help give our DIAC members a better experience at dentalconventions,” said Grassie, region manager—Canada for PremierDental Products, and a DIAC director.
“Additionally, I also focus my efforts on ensuring that DIAC hasa presence and is visible at dental conventions, which allows ourmembers to see that we are actually visible to the dental community.”
Public exposure at dental conventions not only benefits currentDIAC members, but also gives potential new members an opportuni-ty to find out about what DIAC does and the benefits of becoming amember, Grassie told DENTAL CHRONICLE.
In order to become a member of DIAC, each company musthave Canadian presence and be in compliance with all Canadian lawsregarding importing and distributing medical drugs and devices.
“Being a member of DIAC ensures that customers know thatyou are a company of high standards and in compliance withCanadian laws,” she said.
“Customers looking to purchase dental products and devicescan rest assured that anything we promote is legal and legitimatebecause our members are responsible, cooperative citizens and com-panies.”
Recently, DIAC partnered with DENTAL CHRONICLE to producefour dental meeting guides in 2011.
“We are excited about this partnership because it will give ourmembers an exclusive vehicle to reach out to potential customers,”Grassie said.
This partnership will also provide DIAC members with anexclusive opportunity for formal advertising exposure, she said.

Dining near the Convention Centre
1. Five Sails, Pan-PacificHotel, 300-999 CanadaPlace, R level, 604-844-2855. Everything exceedsexpectations: the food, theatmosphere, the service, andespecially the view. Pricy, but a singular experience.
2. Coast Restaurant, 1054Alberni St., 604-685-5010.There aren’t as many goodseafood restaurants in Van -couver as visitors might ex -pect. This one measures up.
3. Miku, 1055 W. Hastings,604-568-3900. Outstandingsushi and fresh fish prepa-rations.
Dining worth hopping in a cab1. Lumiere, 2551 West
Broadway # 8, 604-739-8185.French new wave cuisine andrelaxed, elegant service.Highly recommended.
2. Vij’s, 1480 W 11th Ave.,604-736-6664. Expect long, long waits at the place manyconsider the best kitchen inthe city, featuring “fusionIndian” cuisine.
3. Tojo’s Restaurant, 1133West Broadway, 604-872-8050. Reputed to be thesource of the best sushi inCanada, and priced accord-ingly, Tojo draws a loyal fol-lowing return-diners.
Casual dining near the Convention Centre1. Cactus Club Café, 588
Burrard St., and other loca-tions. A 21st Century rein-vention of the neighbor-hood bar-restaurant, thesefashionable bistros offercompetent food and drinkin a stylish atmosphere.
2. White Spot, 580 WestGeorgia St., and many loca-tions. What “Chock-Full-of-
Nuts” once was toManhattan, this ubiquitiouslocal chain of coffee-and-burger shops is toVancouver. The Spot hasgone upscale, but remainsfamily and wallet friendly. And if you miss them, there’s one waiting at theairport on your way out.
3. Imperial Chinese, 355Burrard St, 604-688-8191.Very good dim sum atlunch; Peking Duck is adependable dinner order.
Something differentMink: A Chocolate Cafe, 863
Hastings Street W., 604-633-2451. Distinctive spot, witha loyal fan base, specializingin all imaginable forms ofpotable and edible chocolate.
Comfortable barsElephant & Castle, 385 Bur -
rard St., 604-696-6730. For acity built on Eng -lish traditions, there are disap-pointingly fewauthentic UK-stylepubs. This onecomfortably fitsthe bill, and turnsout acceptable fish‘n’ chips, alongwith an oddlydubious Yorkshirepudding.
