Pan de MuertosThis is a special bread prepared for Day of the Dead Fiesta on November 1st and 2nd.

Necesitamos 1 - 2 personas

The bread is taken to the cemetery or placed on the altar

in the home.

Pan de Muertos- Receta #1

Easy recipe but not as good as the second

Ingredients:

2 cups bisquick (pancake mix) 2 Tbsp. sugar1 egg2/3 cup water or milk

Cooking Instructions:

Heat oven to 400˚ Grease a large cookie sheet.

1. Mix all ingredients, and beat vigorously for ½ minute2. Give a small amount to each child and mold a crossbone or

skull.3. Sprinkle with the topping *see below4. Bake 20-25 minutes. 5. Serve warm with milk.

*Topping: Combine ¼ cup brown sugar, 1 Tbsp. flour, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1 Tbsp melted butter.

Pan de Muertos - Receta #2

A little more effort- a lot better product

Ingredients :

½ cup milk

¼ cup butter

¼ cup sugar

½ tsp salt

1 envelope dry yeast

2 eggs

2 – 1/3 cup unsifted all purpose flour

½ tsp cinnamon

Instructions:

1. Bring milk to scalding. Remove from heat and stir in butter (in small pieces), sugar, and salt. Let cool.

2. In a bowl, mix yeast with ¼ cup warm water. Let stand about 5 minutes. Add milk mixture, 1 whole egg, 1 egg yolk and flour. Blend well. Place dough on a well floured board and knead until smooth and velvety, about 5 minutes. Place in a bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled. (take about 1- ½ hours). Knead again on a floured board to expel air bubbles.

3. Cut off a 1/3 cup sized piece of dough. Set aside. Divide the remaining dough in 3 equal parts. Shape each into a rope about 12 inches long. Braid ropes together, pressing ends to hold securely. Place on a greased baking sheet and join ends firmly to make a wreath. Divide reserved dough in half. Shape each portion into a bone. Cross bones on top of wreath.

4. Cover lightly and let rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes or until puffy looking. Brush gently with 1 slightly beaten egg white. Mix cinnamon and 2 teaspoons sugar, sprinkle into loaf, avoiding the bones. Bake in a 350 oven for about 35 minutes or until richly browned. Cut in wedges. Serve warm with butter.

Calaveras de Azucar

Calaveras (skulls) are a common treat to give to children, a loved one, or as decoration for an altar during Day of the Dead. The most famous of them all, La Catrina (below) is often the icon of Day of the Dead along with many other dancing, celebrating skeletons.

Papel Picado

Papel Picado, “punched paper”, is a traditional folk art used in Mexico and many other Latin American countries to celebrate various holidays. Papel picado has a rich, varied history with influences from several countries and Pre-Columbian origins.

There are stencils/cut out guides en la clase.
