DI Men’s Track & Field Scholar Athletes of the Year & All­AcademicIndividuals Announced

NEW ORLEANS — Sean McGorty of Stanford, Ryan Crouser of Texas, Mason Ferlic of Michigan and Nick Miller of OklahomaState have been named the Male Scholar Athletes of the Year in NCAA Division I Track & Field for the 2015­16 season by the U.S.Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Combining their accomplishments in the classroom and in competition during the recentlycompleted academic year, these four men were the most exceptional among a group of 570men who earned USTFCCCA All­Academic honors on Thursday.

Scholar Athletes of the Year were selected as the highest finishing performers at the NCAADivision I Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships who achieved All­Academicstatus. Those who won individual championship titles ranked higher in the tie­breakingprocess and cumulative GPA is weighed as the final tiebreaker.

Separate awards are given to track athletes and field athletes for the indoor and outdoorseason, hence the four categories.

McGorty, a sophomore majoring in Management Science and Engineering, obtained a 3.51GPA during the track & field season. The Fairfax, Virginia native is the first male athlete fromStanford to win the Indoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year Award. He finished runner­upto Oregon’s Edward Cheserek in the 3000 and anchored Stanford’s DMR team to a fourth­place finish the previous night.

Crouser, a graduate student in Finance, held down a 3.47 GPA during his only season ofeligibility this academic year. The Boring, Oregon native is the first Longhorn to win aScholar Athlete of the Year Award from the Association. Crouser stood out in a big way as a

senior as he won the indoor shot put title and tied a collegiate record earlier in the season.

Ferlic, a graduate student pursuing his master’s degree in aerospace engineering, had a3.607 GPA. The native of St. Paul, Minnesota is the first Michigan athlete to be namedOutdoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year. Ferlic dominated the steeplechase all season longand cruised to a three­second win at NCAAs over Arkansas’ Frankline Tonui.

Miller, a senior from Carlisle, England, notched a 3.59 GPA during his final year inStillwater, Oklahoma. The Outdoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year only competed threetimes during the outdoor season but made the final one count as he won the hammer titlewith a heave of 73.98m (242­8).

All­Academic Individuals

Including the Scholar Athletes of the Year, a total of 570 men from 161 institutions earned USTFCCCA All­Academic honors duringthe 2015­16 track & field season.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All­Academic Track & Field Team, the student athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 andhave met at least one of the following athletic standards:

For the indoor season, a student­athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individualevent or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.For the outdoor season, a student­athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (includingpreliminary rounds).

The team with the most All­Academic honorees was BYU with 17. Arkansas was close behind with 14, while Stanford and Nebraskaeach had 13.
