Principal’s Message
Dear Parent, Carers and Students,
National Reconciliation Week - More than a word. Reconciliation takes action.
This week is the commencement of National Reconciliation Week, a time for all
Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore
how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The Week runs from
27 May to 3 June every year. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the
reconciliation journey – the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo
decision.
Reconciliation Australia’s theme for 2021, More than a word. Reconciliation takes action, urges the reconciliation movement towards braver and more impactful action.
At our school we are extremely proud of our students engaging in the learning of language
and we look forward to hearing about the experiences of our students who will attend the
Wiradjuri Language Camp next week. Our students will also participate in the Forbes
Reconciliation events throughout the week.

Term 2, Week 6
It has once again been a busy but highly productive few weeks for our school with a focus
on learning and assessment. We have also been engaged in many sporting and extra
curricula activities ensuring our students have rich well rounded learning experiences.
Year 11 got behind the wheel of the Rotary Youth Driver Simulator and learned some very
important lessons regarding road safety and the implications of engaging in risk taking
behaviour whilst driving. Thank you to Rotary for providing such a worthwhile experience
for our students.
Our staff and students ran and walked the cross country course followed by a barbeque
lunch last week on a beautiful autumn day. Thank you to the staff and students for their
participation and engagement during the event.
Our talented students from the Support Unit participated in the Cowra Eisteddfod last week
and a more detailed report can be found in this newsletter. I would like to commend the
following students and groups. Sarah-Jane Sullivan received a first place in the solo vocal
section. Oscar Brown received a highly commended for his solo performance. The bucket
drumming group performance was awarded second place and a highly commended was
awarded to the group performance of “Shake your Tail Feather”. I look forward to attending
the Forbes Eisteddfod and watching our students’ performances.
I mentioned in our last newsletter that as a school we are reviewing and refining a range of
procedural documents and this week we worked with a team who supported us in
examining and refining our practices. I look forward to sharing these with you all as we
continue to develop and then consult with our school community and enhance our
practices and processes.

Term 2, Week 6
A school focus continues to be on attendance and the impact that that does have on
student learning. Every minute of the school day is critical in ensuring that student learning
is maximised. Please ensure your child is up and ready to arrive at school for the start of
the day and that any appointments are booked outside of school hours wherever possible.
We appreciate your support of Forbes High School, as always, please contact the school if
you have any questions or queries.
Warm regards.

Term 2, Week 6
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had a small numbers of incidents at Forbes High School that have involved
‘Vapes’ or e-cigarettes that have been confiscated from students. These are prohibited
items at all Department of Education schools and are an increasing health concern in the
wider community.
I have included some information for parents below and would like to acknowledge Senior
Constable Jane Heffernan - School Liaison Officer for providing me with this material.
Students caught with a Vape or Vaping at school will be issued a Formal Caution of
Suspension and will be put through an education program through the Wellness Hub
supported by NSW Health staff. Please read and discuss the legal, social and health
implications of the use of these items with your young person and if additional support is
required please contact your local health centre or contact the school for advice.
Vaping (e-cigarettes)
There is an increasing number of young people in society who are ‘vaping’, in other words,
smoking e-cigarettes. Unlike smoking cigarettes, where the smell of smoke lingers on the
clothes and breath, as a parent it is extremely difficult to know if your son is using e-
cigarettes. The belief that vaping is a safe alternative to smoking is false, and it is
important that you and your son are aware of the facts and risks associated with e-
cigarette use. The issues surrounding vaping are taught in the PDHPE curriculum.
What is an e-cigarette?
E-cigarettes are devices that deliver an aerosol by heating a solution that users breathe in.
The aerosol is commonly referred to as ‘vapour’. Often the vape is flavoured, such as
watermelon or apple, adding to the appeal for younger users.
What do they look like?
E-cigarettes come in many shapes, styles and colours, such as
the shape of a pen or a USB device. This adds to the appeal for
young people to own a ‘cool’ gadget. It also means it is much
harder to notice if someone is in possession of one.
What are the health risks?
Hazardous substances have been found in e-cigarette liquids and in the aerosol produced
by e-cigarettes, including formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acrolein, which are known to
cause cancer. Some chemicals in e-cigarette aerosols can also cause DNA damage.
Whilst e-cigarettes do not produce the tar produced by conventional cigarettes which is the
main cause of lung cancer, many scientists are concerned that using e-cigarettes could

increase the risk of lung disease, asthma, heart disease and cancer. There is growing
evidence regarding the link between vaping and severe lung disease.
Fatalities have occurred with a direct link to vaping in the U.S., and whilst rare, serious
injury to the face has occurred as a result of a malfunctioning e-cigarette.
What is the law regarding the use of e-cigarettes?
In Australia, it is illegal to use, sell or buy nicotine for use in e-cigarettes. It is also illegal to
sell vapes or vaping accessories to a person under 18 years old.

Stage 4 Textiles
In textiles we are learning how to use the sewing machine and make a soft toy. Mine is going to be Pennywise's head when I'm finished. To practice using the sewing machine we’ve made pencil cases, drink coolers and hand sewn soft toys. Well that concludes today’s stage 4 Support Unit textiles newsletter report.

Stage 4 Science
The Support Unit Stage 4 are learning about anatomy and the human body. We dissected a chicken wing and a sheep heart in Science Prac with Mr French. I learnt that the arteries are bigger than I thought; well at least a sheep heart is. Miss Emmett’s class met with Dr Brooke Huuskes from Melbourne on a video call. They were taught about the kidneys and how ‘they are the best organ in the body’ as she said.
