LITHIUM BATTERIES

Step 1 – What type of Battery are you shipping?

Lithium Ion Batteries

Lithium Metal Batteries

Rechargeable batteries commonly used in consumer electronicsMost popular battery for portable electronics: laptops, mobile phones, MP3, camcorders etc. A fire involving lithium ion batteries can be extinguished by an aircraft halon fire extinguisher

Not rechargeableLonger life than the normal alkaline batteries and can be used in toys, cameras, ...A fire involving lithium metal batteries can NOT be extinguished by an aircraft halon fire extinguisher

Step 3 – How many Watt per hour* does your battery have?

≤100 W/h in case of a Battery

≤ 20 W/h in case of a cell

• Cell is a single powered unit.• Battery is a number of cells connected to each otherNormally, shipments consist of batteries, and not of cells.

*The W/h must be marked on the outside of th battery, for batteries manufactured since January 2009. But, laptops, mobile phones and other small consumer electronics have less than 100 W/h batteries (apart from perhaps some extra duration batteries – for those use formula Wh = AhxV in case the Wh are not marked in the battery).

>100 W/h in case of a Battery

> 20 W/h in case of a cell

EXTRA REQUIREMENTS ACCORDING TO USG-02

If shipping to/from/through the United States of America, Lithium Metal (or Lithium Primary) batteries are forbidden in passenger aircraft.

Packages complying with the Section II of the different PIs must be marked:

“PRIMARY LITHIUM BATTERIES — FORBIDDEN FOR TRANSPORT ABOARD PASSENGER AIRCRAFT”

or

“LITHIUM METAL BATTERIES — FORBIDDEN FOR TRANSPORT ABOARD PASSENGER AIRCRAFT.”

Note: There are exceptions to this rule, in case batteries are shipped with or in equipment. However, exceptions are still stricter than IATA regulations, please contact [email protected] for specific information.

EXTRA REQUIREMENTS ACCORDING TO USG-02

If shipping to/from/through the United States of America, Lithium Metal (or Lithium Primary) batteries are forbidden in passenger aircraft:

Packages complying with the Section I of the different PIs must be labeled with the CAO label, even if under the limits of PAX. Documentation must be made accordingly.
