Kishau Rogers is the Founder and CEO of Websmith Group, a software development company in Richmond, VA. She is most passionate about using web and mobile technology to improve how organizations collect, maintain and report their data. Kishau has nearly twenty years of experience in the computer science and information technology industry, specializing in web and enterprise data system development. The Mobile Landscape: There are more users accessing the internet using mobile devices than PCs.

In the past year, people have spent 24% more time using digital media via mobile web browsers, desktop browsers and mobile applications. Mobile app usage increased 52%. Mobile web (browser) usage increased by 17%. Digital media time spent on desktops increased by 1%. .

Digital Media Time has increased by 24% Total mobile activity makes up 60% of time spent on digital media; 52% of that time was spent using mobile apps. Desktop browser usage accounts for the remaining 40%.

The Mobile Landscape

There are 1.4 billion smartphones in use (2013). There are over 224 million monthly active mobile application users in the U.S. The number of mobile users continues to grow.

iPhone users engage with their smartphone apps for nine more hours. Android ranked as the top smartphone platform in August with 52% market share, followed by Apple with 42%, Microsoft with 3.5%, BlackBerry with 2.3 % and Symbian with 0.1%.

• Poorly defined requirements. Requirements can be under documented (one paragraph email) OR over documented (binders of information & legalese & jargon). At all times, everyone should have a clear understanding of the scope of work to be delivered.

• Native: apps that are written using the Software Development Kit (SDK) provided by the device's vendor.

• Mobile Web: HTML5 app installed on a web server can access via mobile devices using the device's browser

• Hybrid: an app written as an HTML5 app but distributed via 3rd party framework that encapsulates the HTML5 code and allows the app to be packaged as if it were a native app.

pitfalls

One million ways to skin a cat. Tool selection is a complex act requiring consideration and support for up to 4 platforms (Android, iOS, Windows and Blackberry) and 3 application architectures (native, hybrid and mobile Web).

Considerations: software Development life cycle

Waterfall : Using the traditional software development life cycle's (SDLC), the waterfall model enforces completing one phase (e.g. planning) before moving on to the next phase (e.g. development) Agile : focuses on frequent inspection and adaptation and delivering functional bits of the application as soon as they're ready.

pitfalls

• Poor Requirements management – out of date requirements documents could lead to miscommunication regarding the expected product to be delivered

• Technical uncertainty – delaying the development of the most challenging aspects of the project.

• Unproductive billable time (too many meetings, admin tasks, unnecessary travel i.e. time not developing)
