Progress Report | March 20, 2008 to April 30, 2009

Letter from the President

March 20, 2008 marked our incorporation as a nonprofit in the State of

California, bringing our communities, TuDiabetes.org and EsTuDiabetes.org,

and Word In Your Hand (our first diabetes awareness initiative) under the

umbrella of the newly formed Diabetes Hands Foundation.

We licensed Word In Your Hand to LifeScan in 2008. Thanks to this

partnership, all our programs obtained significant media and public

exposure. TuDiabetes jumped from 2,000 members in March 2008 to nearly

7,000 in April 2009. EsTuDiabetes grew six-fold, going from less than 500

members in March 2008 to 3,000 members in April 2009. Our 2008 fundraising

campaigns resulted in more than US$7,500 collected through online

donations.

In 2008, our Drawing Diabetes video received more than 40,000 views.

We also gathered submissions from our members for the Diabetes Supplies

Art initiative, resulting in another successful diabetes awareness video with

thousands of views in early 2009.

In 2008, as a result of our commitment to World Diabetes Day, the

International Diabetes Federation recognized TuDiabetes and EsTuDiabetes

as Friends of World Diabetes Day. We then organized and promoted an

online petition to Google asking them to acknowledge World Diabetes Day

through a Diabetes Doodle on their home page, Nov. 14, 2008. Although this

effort did not produce the intended result, we collected nearly 15,000

signatures, confirming the potential support we can expect from social

media-based awareness campaigns.

During December 2008 and January 2009, we partnered with numerous

patient advocacy groups and medical professionals to appeal to the

incoming FDA leadership on behalf of patients with diabetes. In early 2009, we

ran the No-Sugar Added Poetry contest, which will lead to our first book in

early 2010. In April 2009, we also partnered with DiabetesDaily to develop the

Simple Steps for Health awareness program.

Finally, in early 2009, we started collaborating with the Health Informatics

team from Children’s Hospital Boston at Harvard Medical School. The goal of

this collaboration is to create an application through which our members will

be able to conveniently track and optionally share their diabetes data

starting in early 2010. Members who use this application will also be able to

participate in nonprofit research studies conducted by Harvard Medical

School to better understand how social networks can be used to improve the

health of those who participate in them.

In 2008 and 2009, the foundation received extensive media coverage in

the US and internationally. EsTuDiabetes was featured in Don Francisco’s

shows in Univision and TuDiabetes was featured in Hallmark Heroes, a

Christmas show hosted by Regis Philbin. Our work was also highlighted on

NPR’s Diane Rehm Show, in national publications such as Time, People and

Diabetic Living and internationally in El Pais (Spain), Diabetes Hoy (Mexico)

and El Universal (Venezuela).

Starting May 2009, we began diversifying sources of funding by

conducting online and offline fundraising, securing grants to help develop

new diabetes awareness initiatives, identifying sponsors for our programs and

including limited ads on our communities and newsletters.

Although this belongs in next year’s Annual Report, we feel it’s important

to the reader to know that effective September 21, 2009 the Diabetes Hands

Foundation became exempt from US Federal income tax under section

501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. As a result, donations to Diabetes

Hands Foundation are eligible to be tax-deductable.

About the Diabetes Hands Foundation

The Diabetes Hands Foundation (DHF) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that connects

people touched by diabetes and raises diabetes awareness.

The roots of DHF go back to 2006, when the idea of creating a social network for a higher purpose for those affected by diabetes, started brewing. This idea turned into TuDiabetes.org, our first online community, in March 2007. EstuDiabetes.org, a sister community in Spanish, followed in August 2007, becoming a top global destination for people searching for support and information about diabetes in Spanish.

Between March 20, 2008 and April 30, 2009, the two communities received more than 700,000 unique visitors (including registered members) who viewed more than 6.5 million pages.

We develop programs that involve the participation of our community members on the generation of diabetes awareness materials. Each program revolves around a specific theme and works as an interactive conduit that connects individuals through self-expression and creativity.

As a result, the community participates in the generation of useful and authentic content, which in turn, strengthens the community through the participation and empowerment of its members. Some of our community-generated content initiatives are: Word in Your Hand®, Drawing Diabetes, Diabetes Supplies Art and No-Sugar Added Poetry.

Our Miss ion

To provide an open space for

people touched by diabetes to

connect with others in pursuit of a

healthy life through support,

information and creative

expression.

Our V i s ion

We work towards a world where

people with diabetes do not feel

alone and people without

diabetes are well aware of

diabetes and its implications at

large.

Our Diabetes Awareness Programs

Word In Your Hand: this project started with a post by a

TuDiabetes member who posted a photo showing his hand

with a word written on it, describing how he felt about

diabetes. We invited members of the community to

contribute their photos. As a result, we produced a

compilation video in time for World Diabetes Day 2007

showcasing the best submissions.

Drawing Diabetes: for this initiative we invited the children

in TuDiabetes and EsTuDiabetes to draw how diabetes

affects their daily lives or how do they thought it made the

life of diabetic children different from the life of other

kids. Once again, we produced a very touching video

highlighting some of the best entries with music by one of

the members of the community.

Diabetes Supplies Art: this project is closely related to

Drawing Diabetes. We asked our members to use

diabetes supplies to create art as a form of creative

expression and emotional healing. The submissions we

received allowed us to create a video to highlight

some of the challenges faced by patients with

diabetes worldwide.

No-Sugar Added Poetry: the idea for this project was born

when one of our members had a dream of a poetry book

written by our members, which she shared with the Diabetes

Hands Foundation. This is an innovative, educational and

moving program through which we encourage our

members to share through poetry how diabetes has affected their lives.

Our Va lues • Community Support: We foster

a positive environment where

our members support and help

each other

• Health and Well-Being: We

actively promote positive and

proactive actions to stay

healthy while having diabetes.

• Communication and

Information: We encourage the

exchange of information and

storytelling about diabetes.

• Diversity and Respect: We

value diverse points of view. All

people touched by diabetes

are welcome.

• Creative Expression: We see

creativity as a catalyst for

emotional healing and raising

diabetes awareness.

• Transparency: We embrace

openness and authenticity, as

long as it doesn’t conflict with

the other values.
