The spirit of the place
A place of worship transformed into a restaurantleaves several traces of the past functions it had.The same important marks such as the architecturalstructure and the historiated many-colored windowsdeclare what the spirit of the place was.Now we go there to have a meal and we often askourselves whether that renovated place regenerateda new spirit. Actually the genius loci never changes:the architectural strength of the building prevailson the new use which is the result of the temporaryfunction. The spirit of the place is an expressivesynthesis of social functions determined by traditionsand by socio-cultural processes which gather theirqualities together. In every part of the world we can identify many artworks used by the community, expressing the closebelonging through materials and decorative elements.Technologies and design skills, melted withexpressiveness of local cultures, can realize buildingsand environments revealing and confirming the spiritof the place.

In Milan, inside the historic Milanese frame ofPalazzo dell’Informazione, severe andmonumental building designed byGiovanni Muzio and decorated byMario Sironi, during the first yearsof the Forties. Interiorsare curated by the architect GiuliaCorvi, Costa Group, in cooperationwith the set designer Silvia Tramparulo, and according to the monumentalstyle of the environment, playing itsrigor down. The result is an elegantenvironment with a retro style, playingwith the important heights of the halland with the wide windows which letthe natural light flow, reflecting a highlyscenographic environment. The rationalist solemnity of space isblended by focused color interventions, with the bright velvet of sofas and theshelving with brass inserts. For the restof the environment, elegant marble forfloors and authentic vintage glass walls, four marble columns accompany the
monumental movement of the hall, two portholes frame the view on thekitchen, and the scenographic marblestairway follows the bustle of workersbetween hall and kitchen. In the café area, the black vintagecountertop with brass outline matchesthe architectural style of the whole.
This newest restaurant seems like aspace shuttle landed among the housesin a calm residential district in Osaka. An architectural experiment which, however, perfectly matchesthe single-family residences andbuildings. We arein Osaka (Japan) and the weirdconstruction is the new restaurantdesigned by the Hiranuma Architects& Associates studio. The SoyaRestaurant fills the spaces of an olddept and it has been conceived to‘strike’ the young creative artists livingand working around there. The location is easy to be recognizedthanks to its special chameleon-likefaçade. The huge sign of theSoya Restaurant was realized withneon. A shell-shaped entrance leadstowards the inside. The restaurant isorganized on three levels. On the lowground there are the stairs leadingto the second floor, a space furnishedwith white shades and characterizedby a long countertop with stalls. Onthe second floor bets on a total blackfurniture with tables for two or fourpersons. Furniture pieces, essential andwith contemporary taste, recall theJapanese pragmatism. There is no spacefor color, everything is in pure whiteor absolute black, perhaps too asepticbut surely aligned with the ‘neatness’which is so appreciated in Japan.Young and active in the whole world, the Hohki Hiranuma Architects &Associates exhibits the project of astructure realized using only glassat the Biennale in Venice (inside the
