Brown Bag Lunch Series is Back!On September 6, 2018, from 12 to 2 p.m., MAHC held the first brown bag lunch of the fall in Ellicott City to discuss how legislative advocacy makes a difference in the affordable housing industry and how best to reach legislators. Panelists included State Delegate Steve Lafferty, former State Delegate Justin Ross, and Anne Arundel County Councilman Jerry Walker (pictured below) who all discussed ways advocates and constituents could be most effective when approaching an elected official to support an affordable housing project. They also shared personal stories on how advocates have garnered their support for an issue, and how they have to do their homework before voting on issues and rely on advocates to supply them with facts and information to help them reach an informed decision. The best takeaway from the session is to meet with your legislator early in the development process, provide them with as much information about your project as possible, and stay in touch with them and keep them informed so that when they receive calls from constituents they can then share clear and factual information.

SAVE THE DATE! MAHC Annual Meeting 5 November 2018, 8 AM - 12 PM Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel 202 E Pratt Street, MD 21202

In late August, DHCD announced Strategic Demolition Fund awards for FY19. $3,285,000 will be awarded to 13 projects in nine Maryland counties. More information on the awards is available here.

DHCD also recently awarded more than $9.1 million in grants through DHCD’s new Homelessness Solutions Program. The newly streamlined state program will provide services to 15,000 Marylanders experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

In late July, DHCD co-hosted the Maryland Opportunity Zone Conference in College Park with the Department of Commerce. More than 500 people attended to learn about opportunity zones, which is a new program that will provide federal tax incentives for investment in economically distressed and underserved communities. Bowman Place & Homes at Monument, Annapolis, MD

Homes for America (HFA) recently completed extensive renovations to the Bowman Place and Homes at Monument, formerly known as Timothy House and Gardens. The property was the last of the remaining deteriorating privately-owned Section 8 housing complexes in Annapolis. Bowman Place has 60 one-bedroom units that primarily serve seniors and disabled persons, while Homes at Monument offers 21 three-bedroom family townhouses. All residents in both communities receive rental assistance.

Bowman Place was renamed to honor the late Reverend LeRoy Bowman, a longtime Annapolis civil rights leader who was the pastor of the adjacent First Baptist Church for 60 years.
